internet
It took me two whole weeks to get this down pretty good. At the beginning of the semester, Dr. James and Mr.Bogan said that it would take about two or three weeks to really understand the Internet. And weren't they so right! I'm sorry I took so long to complete my first Lab Report, but everytime I would try something, I would get so frustrated and discouraged to go on so I would just quit. If it wasn't for my friend, Beverly Diaz, I would be back two weeks and totally more confused. Mr. Bogan would also be there in the CLIC Lab to answer any of our questions, but last week I just got more confused and discouraged. He tried his best to help me, but I just couldn't get it. Let's look at where I'm at right now, I'm almost finished with my first paragraph of my first Lab Report.
dumbterminal
I got my UNIX account just three days after the first day of the semester. Then waited two more days for it to be accessed. In the beginning I did fine, butas the weeks went on, I got lost. I could make my lai.html, glossary.html, andlabreport.html, that part was easy. I forgot to put in the command "chmod 755 *" after each new file so that other students would be able to view and comment on what I wrote. But when I got into emacs, I tried to get out one time and whatever key I typed in, it would show up on the screen. I would be pressing Esc and it would say Esc at the bottom of the screen. Finally, the attendent in Keller IBM Lab just pressed Control X and Control C and answered Yes, then I was out. I think it was trial and error until this point of the semester. Also, when I made a mistake in emacs, I thought that if I press backspace or delete, it would erase what I wanted, but it didn't happen this way. I figured it out by, again, the attendent in Keller IBM Lab to hold down the control key and hit the backspace button. Those two buttons are my best friends now!!
trafficpsy
Just getting started on my very first Lab Report, brought a surprise to me when we had to also type in the commands along with the report. It looked very difficult and sort of discouraged me to go ahead and continue what I had to do. But, I'm also in Dr. James' Psy 459 class, Traffic Psychology, and two students completed their first Lab Report and they both got 1 extra credit. I would say that motivated me to get started and try to be on a steady pace, along with the rest of the class and not fall way behind.
logon
Getting back to when I first started on the Internet, I sat at the computer the first time and didn't know what to punch in, when my friend, Bev, said to type in Tel UhUnix. That surely got me in and I just login and typed in my password, which at first I found it to be difficult, but now, it's second nature. I remembered when Dr. James said to "go anywhere, do anything" and nothing will happen to the computer, it took me awhile to comprehend that advise. I was so afraid at first to hit any keys, fearing that I would delete something or can't get out of it. Like Mr. Bogan said before, this first three weeks will be the hardest of this class, after we get through it, it's going to get easier. I want to believe Mr. Bogan and I think I am.
e-mail
When we had to our first task, e-mail to our instructor, I hadn't the slightest idea what to do. As I played around on the keyboard and asking friends what to do, I soon learned the technique. I would say that e-mail is the easiest item I learned in this class so far. Plus, it's so efficient to correspond with Dr. James, Mr. Bogan, and other classmates, without even seeing them. Even Beverly Diaz said in her e-mail section that she had problems and that was the only way to get in touch with others.
Week4
This is my very first class that I'm actually working with the hypertext environment for completeing my assignments. The very first time I ever got on the hypertext, I typed in at the prompt lynx http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/con/leonpsy/leon.html and that brought me to the page where the Instructor has all of his works completed, just like Dr. James has stated in Dr. James' outlines. The next step was to find how to get to the syllabus, which the first step was to go under the title of Affective and Cognitive Processes on the Internet or if you have numbered links, number 4. That would take you to the screen where Dr. James' friend is waving to us and you would follow the direction and press the space bar for the next page, which was the Instructor's Home Page, arrow down to the Syllabus for Spring 1995 or if you have numbered links, number 4. Now you are in the Syllabus for Spring 1995. Under the syllabus, go to the Instructor's Weekly Comments or number 8. The first few weeks was the hardest for me to find, to keep on doing all those steps, in the meantime, maybe making a mistake that could take you someplace else.
navigate
When I navigate through the course files, I simply go to my directory and pick what I want. Otherwise, I enter the Instructor's Home Page again and go to an area I'm interested in. As I look under the list, for instance, I'm looking for the area in Awards. I do what I normally do and page down until I see Awards.
in the beginning
In completeing my assignments for my two classes, which has the same directions for both, is somewhat frustrating. I keep telling myself that I need to complete these two course with at least a 'B' in order to graduate. So I try to come and take charge of what needs to be done. In the beginning, I sure did feel depressed, feeling that this is difficult and bothersome, since I need to come to the lab almost every night to do my homework. But, as I keep working at my weak spot, it seems that I am getting there slowly, but surely. According to what Rebecca has mentioned in her lynx bug is exactly what I go through almost everytime I save in lynx after making corrections.
my goals
Up until now, I'm still not sure of somethings that I'm doing. However as I look at Beverly's completed projects, like her Home Page, I feel that's how I learn to do my own home page and labreports. My goals are to receive a good grade in both of my classes that I'm taking from Dr. James, and also to get a educational knowledge of the internet, soon everything will be on the internet, and come to think of it, we will have some upper hand knowledge of these informations. I still get lost from time to time, but I try to keep a cool lid and keep on trying.
strategies
My strategies are simple now, but in the beginning, they were difficult. When I login, I go straight to my home page and do what I have to do. But first, I have to add in all those anchors and links so that I will have an easier time finding what I wanted. Also, having numbered links are easier and faster to retrieve your informations. Since Dr. James' told us to also add the editor under our emacs, I could just go to my labreports and press 'E' for editor and make any corrections that I may have, instead of getting out of lynx and going into emacs, which saves you a lot of time.
advice
My advice to you all is to just keep your cool and try and try again until you have succeeded what you have accomplished. The only thing that I could tell you is that you will need to take some time and patience to accomplish these assignments and not fight as you go along. If you need help, Mr. Bogan or Dr. James is always there to help. I know, I go to Dr. James very often. The back-slash is very useful when you are caught in a jam and can't figure it out. The equal sign is also helpful in the case if you need to know the person writing it.
Week5
As I read the Generational Curriculum papers for Psy 409, she had many foreign words that I did not understand at first, but as I progress in this class, many of the terms are becoming more familiar to me. When I first received her papers in the beginning of class, I briefly read through it and didn't understand it a bit. It was very difficult to follow along, she mainly talked about the computers and the different services it has to offer and like I mentioned before in class, she never gave feelings or feedbacks on how she felt, learning the new found technique called the Internet. She mainly concentrated on doing researches in each program such as Newsgroup Access (Tin and Rin), Fetch, E-mail and many more other areas.
benefiting
Reading her seven lab reports on the Summary of the Internet were quite interesting on how she navigated around and searched for new amazing things. I feel that the student has accomplished a lot in the last semester. She started off in one paper saying that she was not privileged enough to have a home computer, she just had a laptop. Now, in her last lab report of the semester, she stated that she was purchasing a computer so that she is able to continue learning more about the Information Highway. To show how much she has learned, she wrote in one of her lab report about how she taught her friend about the Internet. She started him off with the Mac Computer and began his lesson in 'Lynx". The experience of helping someone learn the Internet and what there is to offer has been useful. She has learned a tremendous amount of information and developed a skill that includes increased patience and tolerance working with computers.
state-of-mind
According to her state of mind, she was very frustrated in using the Mac computers because as she clicked on to a desired folder, the system just froze. In the very beginning of the semester, she wrote that she was frustrated at herself because she thought she has saved a variety of files to her e-mail address and come to find out, it wasn't there. She was working in the area of NOVA LINKS and the default of the Print Command, to add more confusion, the computer monitor was also confused.
self-witnessing
As I mentioned in class before, this student spends most of her time with Mosaic because she feels confident working in this program for the bright colors and ease of locating the files has affected her mood than working in Lynx. She knows that there will always be loads of information to learn on the information super highway, inorder to be on top of things, continuing to be on the computer is one sure helpful way. She sorted out things and advised to others that encouragement is a "sure-fire method" to help alleviate anxiety. She noticed that without encouragement, the user will allow themselves to gather negative thoughts which can lead to intolerance, frustration, anxiety and discouragement. She and her friend, which he has an account with the E-World, were able to correspond with people across the United States. Then they navigated into the Interactive Forum or discussion group and were viewing members of the groups file card, many interesting names. Her friend decided to also join in and add his unusual name to the list. She said she felt uncomfortable lying and he responded with an uncalled for jesture. A side of him, the computer brought something that she didn't like about him. Interesting.
attention grabbing
By reading her self-witnessing report, made me realize that I should take computers more seriously because sooner or later, everything and everyone will have a computer and we will be corresponding via computer. The more time you spend on the computer, the more confident you feel about yourself on the Internet. There are many interesting areas in the World Wide Web and we are just getting started in exploring the Internet. As she had experienced last semester, I, along with the rest of the class, am recognizing certain words, in conversations with people, on the television, radio and magazines, and relating them to the word I've learned in class. Take a look at what Danell Saito had to say about this.
Week6
2nd time a charm
This is the second time that I went out of the Internet and into the 'other side'. Refer back to my getting started approach for my Psy 459 class. We had the same assignment, that's why I'm linking it to there. As time goes on, it gets a little easier. I, too, like Cheryl Remata's description of finding out how to do the homework, had a very difficult time in doing so. But after a while, I finally found three interesting documents. Take a look at Rebecca Ross'week6 entry, she too used the Instructor's Old Bookmark Entries, which I found many interesting topics and also easy to find.
higher ed in IBM
Those of you who are using the IBM computer, this may be helpful to you. It has IBM information, application software and a bulletin board for the IBM users in the higher education community. For me, I'm just getting started in this field of computer and maybe sometime soon, I'll be able to use those important information available listed there for our use. So go take a look at whatBeverly Diaz had to say about my findings. See also what Carol Alamares had to say about this.
a trip to Italy
Have any of you been to Italy?? Take a look at a view of Italy here and you will be amazed!! When I finish with all of my homeworks and when I'm have nothing to do, I'm going to go through it in detailed. If I can't get there, maybe I can dream it or even see it on the Internet? That's the closest I could get to that one. Take a look at what Grant Harada had to say about this trip.
We're up there too
Look at this link. . .our state is up there along with Alaska, Alabama, Colorado, Florida, all the way to the State of Wyoming. Miss Joanne Oshiro's 5th Graders of Wheeler Elementary has a Home Page up on the World Wide Web! Congratulations!! I saw about 11 autobiography of her many different and loving students. As I compared our totals to the other states, Hawaii had a total of 1 entry and that came from Wheeler Elementary School. As I viewed Virginia's, they had a total of 28 entries, 14 - elementary, 5 - middle, 9 - high school. See how other states are more advanced at an early stage. And we wonder why our S.A.T. scores in the elementary level are lower than the National scores? We need to start and educate our younger generation to do other things besides basics, I think that now, the Internet is a basic in life. In about 20 years or so, the whole community will correspond through the Internet and the telephone will be obsolete.
I know that's in the future, but little do we know, it'll be here before we know it! So let's get together to educate our precious, jems! ! See what Cheryl Remata had to say about this.
Week7
For this week, we have to make 6 hot links to our classmates lab reports and make comments to them. Four is from our classmates and two is from Dr. James' instructor's article from previous generational curriculum. Going through other student's lab report seemed very interesting and educational for me. I get to see how other students' write and see how they feel about a certain topic that we are on. So here goes. . .
a new game
Here is where Beverly Diaz introduces a new and fun game to me. She did this to me once and it just blew me away. She was just sitting next to me in the Keller Lab and she just kept looking at me and smiling. That really got me, I wondered why was she just staring at me and not working on her lab reports or glossary. She told me to get out in whatever I was doing and go to the prompt and type in talk and the other person's address. That was still confusing for me. They give you just a little time to type in the name and the other person's address comes up again. That is discouraging to me because that means I have to type fast and at times I'm not sure of the address and I have to be careful. Thanks to Bev, now I'm learning this and sharing this with other friends.
staring to hard
After reading Carol's Alamares anchor under 'eyestrain', old memories started to come to mind. When I was just getting started in this type of homework, things were great. But after a few times on the computer, I started feeling funny. The first incident was when I came to the lab one Monday evening and stayed on for about four hours straight and had no breaks in between. When I went home, I started to get a throbbing headache and felt like the whole world came crumbling down on my head. The second incident came about one Thursday afternoon, after my Psy 459 class, I was working on the computer and the computer was giving me trouble, then all of a sudden, within a blink of an eye, I felt like the whole room was spinning and felt like we had an earthquake. I opened my eyes, don't know how they got shut, I found myself holding on to my chair. Then I began to get light-headed. Soon after, I left the lab and went home. Reading Carol's new 'practice behavioral pattern', will hopefully relieve my experiences of these tremendous headaches. Eyestrain is surely the cause! Just look away for a few minutes and move your eyes around the room to get it back to normal. Try it.
u not alone
When I was reviewing other people's lab report's, I stumbled across Alison Asahina's feelings of not knowing how to get back to the beginning and her anxiety struck her. I had the same exact feelings. . .you're not alone. Once I got 'lost' in my linking to other places and didn't know how to get back to the start. I started getting frustrated and soon realized that Dr. James' told us of the 'u' button and it will take you back to the beginning. If you press the arrow keys, that won't really work either. Yes, its certainly is a magic 'u' button!
getting help
I stumbled onto Kyle Fujii's lab report and found an interesting anchor to which being hard-headed in asking questions and seeing himself as 'stupid'. I clearly agree with him and saying that I, too, don't like asking questions in class, fearing that the question that I may ask may be stupid or may not make any sense to the instructor or the other students in class. I don't like speaking up in class, I rather wait until after class and ask the instructor personally. Seeing that I am not the only one feeling this way makes me feel a lot better, I too, was getting frustrated about this course until my friend, Bev, started helping me understand the fundamentals about the computer and its program. Now, since we all ventured through almost the hard times, we could say to others that we did it and may also try to help others who are interested in learning the Internet. I feel the same as Kyle when he mentions that when we don't ask for help and accomplishes it on our own, we tend to feel confident about ourselves when we have succeeded a difficult assignment; however, when another challenging topic comes to us, we will take it as a beneficial sign that in the long run, if we encounter it again, we will know what to do.
backing it up
After reading Dr. James' previous generational curriculum on accuracy, made feel that I should be backing up whatever I am writing here on the computer. It sounds real scary to type a whole lot and then mail it to your own address and come to find out that it's not there!! All that time wasted. Now he could type fast and feel confident about himself. But for me, making that extra effort to download and upload again, surely prevents mishaps and frustration to one. Maybe, we can learn from his mistake and try to teach other people to save whatever they are writing because what if someone figures out how to delete all of our files and we have no knowledge of it being vanished from the World Wide Web, then what?? This is something to think long and hard about.
how?
This is another topic under the Instructor's Article mentioning something about 'observing'. In the beginning of the class, I did a lot of observing and still am do a lot more. If you think that's it, you're certainly mistaken. This other person talked about making bookmarks with a proper name or string, and finally figured out how. It takes time and a lot of dedication to get things started. But after a while, things get easier and easier to do and it comes to you like second nature. After reading his paragraph, made me realize that I wasn't the only one having trouble. I thought that to get a bookmark, you would have to press 'a' for add and 'l'' for link and that's it. I'm not quite sure of what this person is saying about a proper name or string?? Maybe this person is working on a Mac computer. See what Jill Kaneshiro had to say about this.
Week8
For this week's assignment we had to cross over to the students of the other course and make links and also, make links to the Instructor's Weekly Comments. This shouldn't be too bad since we already accomplished this in Week 7 and we had some practice with it.
don't get mad
As I browsed through Laura Izutsu's lab report, I tend to agree with her when she mentioned that convoys serve as a sense of belonging and reassurance as a new driver or a visitor to the islands. Society has certainly accepted aggressiveness as a positive trait towards driving, which turns into dangerous situations on the road-ways. If we are we are caught speeding and the police pulls us over, we get a ticket, then why don't we give tickets to those who drives reckless and who jeopardizes other people's lives. The mood of a person has also a positive effect on the way we drive. For instance, if an elderly person aggravates me in traffic, I try to stay calm and think what if that was my mother in that situation, I wouldn't like that person to get mad and scare her on the road-way. However, if I'm in a foul mood, I naturally get frustrated but later regret feeling that way. That why we need to be nice on the high-ways and by-ways to one another, if we get into a jam, we would very much appreciate that 'Aloha Spirit'.
safety device
If you have an 'auto-steering lock mechanism' in your car, please take a look at Danell Saito's link on Automobile Safety Foundation. It may even save you and your family's lives. It's good that they design it to be anti-theft, but there's also a probability of malfunctioning while driving or when you least expect it. Just like people have mood swings, cars has the same principal. This is a very interesting link to read, please take a look at it.
give me a break
Have you ever been stuck in traffic and you see in the rear-view mirror, a person kissing your bumper? Well, I'm pretty sure that everyone has been in that situation when you were behind a person and kissing their bumper, I know I have. Then all of a sudden, he/she is on the side of you trying to cut in front. I tend to agree with Nicole Yoshimitsu that crowds in traffic do intensify tension and impatience among other drivers, especially if it's Friday afternoon. I rarely see people thanking other people for their generousity for letting them into the lane. Where is the Aloha Spirit people??
be here, be there
In this day and age, everyone is on the go and relies heavily upon the time. We are living by the clock which Caroline Balatico stated in her lab report. I tend to agree that society is dominated by the time, if there weren't any clocks available, the society would be a total chaos and a hap-hazard community. Take for instance, we get up every morning by the sound of the alarm clock to get ready for school or work. If there weren't any time, then traffic on the high-ways would be much worse than it is now. We would also be late for an important exam that could determine our standing for a job. In the Ancient Times, people relied on the sun, but they had nothing important to do the next day, maybe only hunting and fishing and maybe some clothes washing. However, if we didn't have any clocks that told time, we would be lost!
entering Cyberspace
During Week 3 of Psychology 459, we actually started to enter the Cyberspace, along with writing about Traffic. I must admit that the first few weeks of this class was trememdously difficult due to the fact that we had to get familiar about the system of World Wide Web and also write about Traffic. As the weeks went on, exploring the Internet was a little bit easier and the topics got easier too. But when we got to Week 6, that week was a disaster, since we had to search the other side for documents that related to the topic of Traffic. However, Traffic in computer termology means that traffic among the super-highway of the internet. Then I decided to try out driving as a search word in the Webcrawler and came out with descriptionsabout the driving cars or about vehicle information. That was pretty much interesting.
just got one
I recently purchased a computer and a modem just this past week. However, I had problems logging in at times. I would try when I thought that people weren't on the UNIX, but, boy, was I ever wrong! I would stay up until maybe 11:00pm Sunday night trying to get the feel of logging in the UHUNIX, but had no luck in doing so. When I tried again on Wednesday afternoon, I had a breeze getting in about 2:45pm, but somehow I got booted out. Then I kept trying about 5-7pm to get logged on and on my screen showed up these messages: rlogin 128.45.31 Network is unreachable, so I tried all the other lines like UHUNIX 2, UHUNIX 4, UHUNIX , UHUNIX3 with no success at all. Could it be that the computer wouldn't accept me again, after I kept logging? I also noticed that if I stayed on one screen too long, my computer would just hang up on me, then I would have to try logging in again. What's the problem here?
Week9
For this week, we will need to explore the 1991 Course Integrated Online Socializing Files and describe how we felt while travelling through their 'mental spaces', what were some of our reactions, would we have liked to participate live, were we affected by anyone's performance, what were they engaged in, and finally, how were they involved. We also will need to make comments to the Instructor's article on his use of the PLATO system.
travelling thru their mental spaces
Reading the 1991 Course Integrated Online Socializing Files for the very first time was quite confusing and after a few other times of re-reading them, it became clear to me on what they were accomplishing. As I was travelling through their 'mental spaces' online, I felt that I was invading their privacy, but I thought to myself that this is all online and they want to expose what they have to say about certain topics and have other people comment on them. Some of the topics that they talked about were interesting and some were uninteresting, especially if I can't relate to them. I personally would like to participate live if we had the chance, but what would we talk about and how explicit would our language have to be? Having this Integrated Online Socializing Files would be helpful in many ways that I could think of. For instance, if I needed help on a certain area of a course, I would go online and socialize with others instead of waiting for the next class to begin and get pushed back in assignments.
what were they talking about
As I mentioned before in travelling thru their mental spaces, some topics were interesting and some seemed to off the wall. Most of these online socializing were talking about whether or not to have multiple choices or essay questions on an exam. On this other conversation that caught my attention was on what is a good major asked by someone. Someone else responded with the reply that there is a shortage on Science teachers and whether you can see yourself teaching elementary, high school, or adults. This is good about online socializing that people respond with an answer to you as quickly as they can. Some even go into deep explanations. How do we get involved with this type of online socializing?
expanding cyberspace learning communities
For one thing, we need to keep building our cyberspace learning communities to future generations like ours. I have no idea on how to continue this approach to expanding the cyberspace learning communities because I am in the process of learning the first few steps of the Internet. When I come up with an idea, I will be sure to revise this section. As for now, I am clueless.
anxiety attack
After reading the instructor's article on his use of the PLATO system, I found a couple of interesting areas to comment on. The first interesting area that caught my attention was on the introduction of the courses that Dr. James taught. Many of us, I would think, would have anxiety attack when we come to the first day of class and the instructor announces to us that we have to know how to use the computer, if we're computer illiterate that is extrememly fearful, to do an area of the course which requires additional workbesides what the course is all about. He explains this to the class of the new topic on Plato usage which is based upon 10% of your course grade. However, I think this is a good start into this area. This is the only way to get students into the new updated technology of the era.
getting the help we need
Along with the anxiety attack that we recieve on the first day of the class, Dr. James also gives his students written guidelines on how to accomplish this part of the course. He explains each detail on what to do to what is being expected. Using the Plato system, Plato provides the user with online help so that you could teach yourself on how to use the system. All he askes of his students is to spend about half and hour on the system and they will receive 10 points. Getting first hand training by the computer its self while having the written guidelines and explanations in front of us certainly helps us out a great deal to understand on how to go about the generational bulletin boards.
Week10
Well, I finally completed my Week 10 assignment, but I think I will work on it a little bit more when I have more time on my hands. As you could see my Artistic homepage, needs a little bit more time into it. As for my Standard homepage, we just had to list down what we went through and topics in our labreports and on our original homepage. I must say that this week was the hardest assignment that I have ever encountered! Hope there isn't any more like this! I thought that we just had to complete two more homepages, but to my dismay, we also had to write a labreport on it. So here goes.
sample sizes on the WWW Beverly and I started to browse through the Netscape when Dr. James asked who has gone on the Netscape for the past week or so? Then I knew at that moment I had to spend more time and explore the Netscape. At first, I had trouble hooking up to it because I was on the wrong computer at Keller, the attendants there doesn't have a sign for Netscape users available. When I got the correct computer, it took a while to get connected. But when I did! WOW! I was amazing to see! When I found the homepages on the World Wide Web, I was simply amazed! I noticed that many of the homepages were indexical rather than standard homepages. I also looked at some artistic homepages, which gave me ideas, but to me, took a while to do, so that's why I'm planning to revise my artistic homepage later.
this is helpful
When in doubt, always see what the teacher has to offer us. I must admit that got stumped on this assignment. I postponed it off as long as I could and did other things for the other class. When I finally realized that I had to complete it or else I won't be able to graduate, I hopped right to it. First of all, I read the Week 10 homework over and over again until I could recite it to you by heart. I did my Standard homepage, that was kinda easy, then I completed my Artistic homepage which is still under construction. Then came the part when we had to browse World Wide Web homepages. That part took the longest because had many interesting and unique homepages to experiment with!
remember this?
It just dawned on me. . .remember in week 6 of our homework, we had to surf the other side and see what we found? Well, I was just browsing through my topical indexes and found what could be related to this homework assignment on other people's homepages on the World Wide Web. Isn't it amazing that Hawaii is up there! At that age, I knew nothing about the Internet or about a computer. All through my high school and college days, I would use a typewriter or my bosses computer at work to do any papers that were assigned. That were the 'good ole days'! Seeing these kids from Hawaii up on the World Wide Web, makes me want to teach kids more and more, making them more familiar about the Internet and how to use. Maybe one day I may have the opportunity to do so.
the best that I could do
As you could remember in my this is helpful paragraph, I was really stuck with this homework. I can see that many of us are also stuck, many are 'under construction'. This week's assignment may take longer than expected, Dr. James, as for me, I still need to revise my artistic homepage, which seems very plain and boring to the eyes. So please bear with me on this one! Seeing my fellow classmate's homepages will allow me to get ideas and proceed with the revision.
Week11
Phew! Now that week 10 is finally over, I can continue on to week 11 assignment. This week's assignment shouldn't be too bad, wait until the next week's assignments! Oh boy. At first, Kuhlthau didn't interest me at all, but as I read it slowly and tried to grasp the concept, it became to interest me.
reactions to reading Kuhlthau
As you can see, I had trouble reading this book, it seemed very complicated; however, as we did presentations in class, it became clearly to me. I wish I had this book when I was going to high school, maybe it would have helped me in some way or another. I am one who hates and tries to avoid going to the library as much as possible. I get very discourage if I have to find something and I have a difficult time doing so. Kuhlthau describes a series of studies of the information Search Process of users and presents theoretical framework for a process approach to library and information services. As I read on, if I had read this book while in high school, maybe I would actually enjoy going to the library looking for topic informations. Please click here to see Jill Kaneshiro's link.
what's it all about
In Kuhlthau's book, she mentions that there is a need for counseling in the process of information seeking and also recommends strategies for designing and implementing interventions into the user's process of learning from information access. The main purpose of this book is to increase access to resources and informations. If we can't increase the access, then how are the student's able to complete the assignments? Kuhlthau then observes and describes the cognitive and affective processes in the interpretation of construct theories. At one point, Dr. Kuhlthau did studies on high school and college students over a period of one academic year as they worked on research papers. She then came up with the term known as 'Information Seeking Process (ISP)', a well thought out and appropriate stages. It has also been stated that Kuhlthau related the role of the librarians to those involved in the levels of education. Mainly, this book was written as a valuable tool for reflective librarians and information professional to recognize and respond to user's needs for counseling in the process of learning from information access and use. Enjoy it!
how can it help me?
Well, first of all, like I mentioned in Kuhlthau's passage, would have helped me out a great deal when and if I had this book back in high school. If I decide to continue on with my education, which I think that I am, when I'm in Graduate School, reviewing Kuhlthau's book will certainly help out. Again, if we can incorporate the old theories and the new and improved theories, then maybe the user will have an easier time finding and seeking informations in the library. If I could remember correctly, it was mention in class that not everybody goes about seeking and finding information like the person next to you, everyone has their own ideas on how to do it and we are all taught differently in high school, so may be advanced than others are. We need to build grounded theory of a process approach to information seeking for future generations.
related to my own experiences
When I came upon Chapter 3 of Kuhlthau's book, I just had to laugh, I don't mean laugh in a bad way, but I actually saw myself in that section of the book. The stages were: Stage 1 - task initiation; when a person realized that there is information needed to complete this assignment. I for one, get excited and very gung ho about doing the assignment, when actually I complete the assignment just weeks before the due date, like many of us. Stage 2 - topic selection; general topic is selected and investigation is in pursue. I have a bad habit of always changing my topics, that's if I am unable to find resources to fit my selection of choice. If I don't like what I find, then again, I will change my topic to maybe an easier one to challenge. Stage 3 - prefocus exploration; feelings of confusion, uncertainty, and doubt. It takes time and effort to investigate the resources found in the library, and if you're like me, I hate spending time in there. If I can avoid it, I will abandon the search and look for other opportunities for extending constructs. Stage 4 - focus formulation; feelings of uncertainty diminish and confidence increasese. This happens to me when I am half way through my project and I see the light at the end of the dark tunnel. Stage 5 - information collection; interaction between user and the information system functions most effectively and efficiently. At this point of the project, I have seen the librarians a zillion times and they know me by name already. Stage 6 - search closure; feeling of relief. It's all completed! I'm done with the project and next I will see what grade I will have for completing this task of the course, which at times is about 20% of the grade. By this stages, I clearly see myself like I mentioned before, I like to procrastinate to the very end and enjoy it when I see the final grade. Take a look at what Kyle Fujii had to say. See Rayson Noguchi's comment.
Week12
WOW! For week 12 assignments is quite long and very confusing to me. We had to go into Dr. James' files entitled Swedenborg Discussion Files on Psychology and Theology and it's about 177 pages long! To me, it seems as though it's the same procedures for the works on the 1991 Course Integrated Online Socializing Files which again, was also confusing to me.
social context of the exchange
What were they actually talking about?! I don't know! I was reading the responses of one topic then when I went down to read the next response, it was totally different and off the subject! Why aren't the questions before the answers? It seems as if I'm interrupting a conversation and don't know what the person had said prior to what I understood. Huh? Many of responses that I could gather were mainly about the beliefs of God and about Traffic situations. Some of the people really got into the debate about religions, I for one, is a believer of the Lord Jesus, maybe because I grew up in an elementary school environment which geared towards God, but also have respect for Buddhism because of my grandmother and mother. I was taught that if you believe in God and have Him in your heart and don't necessarily go to church regularly, you will be given the opportunity to enter into Heaven when Christ comes. what were they trying to achieve?
I believe I mentioned some in the social context of the exchange in the previous paragraph. The participants had many unique and interesting styles of responses to view. Many were to the point and some just debated about certain topics that interested them. Let's bring up the topic on Theology. Theology refers to the study of God and of religious doctrines and matters of divinity. There's one quotation I found it to be very meaningful and deep: ". . .Evil is the absence of Good". What do you think about it? The other main line of topics were about traffic situations, there was this one response about people who don't use their signals! This person seemed to be angry at those who don't use them. Car manufacturers installed signaling gadgets for a purpose, not just for decorations! There was also a response about those people who were waiting to make left turns at an intersections and the person across sees them edging out, tries to 'scare' them into thinking that the car going straight is going to hit them as soon as the light turns green! How about those people who turns left and the car right behind them turns as if they are united and I'm coming across the intersection, aiming to hit that person! Okay, I just needed to vent that, but doesn't that annoy you?! The responses I thought that an individual tried to achieve was that of voicing their views and opinions to others.
visit to Cyberspace useful?
I think it helped me. It allowed me to get ideas on how to do certain assignments for that particular week. It also served as a recreation event when you are using the Netscape, recommended by Dr. James. Viewing Netscape allowed us not only other people's home pages, but also seeing our favorite television show heart-throbs, and the lastest Soap Opera scoops. Other areas in Cyberspace had many interesting links to jokes, comics, and other miscellaneous items, that I found interesting. Take a look at what I mean here at this Yahoo link.
Week13
Hi! I didn't leave this blank on purpose, for this week, see what our assignment is for this class. Click here! !
Week14
For Week 14 , we have to describe how we make up titles and how we recognize them, interpret other people's file names, making up anchors, and many other questions to be answered. I'll do the best that I can for this week, I just have to go step by step just like I'm learning this class all over again. Hope this helps you like it may help me more in the future.
titles
First of all, see my definition of titles and how that's the first step of conquering this class. Without that, we will not be able to have pathways to travel in the World Wide Web! Just look at it like a foundation for a new house, don't have it, the house won't be able to stand up straight and tall. For a better explanation on creating titles, look at Dr. James' article on Titles and comments. He covers two main areas on the creation of titles, 'ordinary text and titles or headings which constitute the document's meta-text', which I feel that many of us falls under the category of the 'ordinary text'. To sum it up, '. . . titles needs to account for the flow of information between author and reader.'
creating file names
When you create a file name, you should design one that represents your documents and also by looking at your directory, you will be able to recognize it. For instance, in the beginning of the semester, Dr. James assigned us to create 3 files, namely lastname.html, labreport.html, and glossary.html, all which represents a specific working document. When you type 'dir' at the prompt , you will get a listing of all the files that you have created so far. Don't forget to type chmod 755 * after every new file that you have created, which gives read permissions to all files to group and the outside world.
other people's file names
You are browsing other people's lab reports and you come across your name, what do you do? Well, don't panic, simply hit the toggle button, which should be the '=' sign to see the individual's file identification and the link identification. The top of the source should show the user identification and how it falls under the tree directory and at the bottom of the page, shows who you made a link to. Don't forget to press the '=' sign to return to rendered version. Click here for Jill Kaneshiro's link.
anchor names
To make an anchor , you should also create a sub-heading for each text and make it easy to recognize it in your topical index. The anchor serves as a link which allows you and other people to comment on or refer to it in their lab reports. Also, in the other people's file names after the html code and the # is the anchor name. The anchor name should always be what is written on the text side of the lab report, but if the individual does not do this, there is a way to find out the anchor name. The person should hit the '\' or backslash to view what the user has named his anchor. That's why we should always keep the names that appear on the text the same as the anchor name, to make it easier on you and the browser.
Week15
Phew! This is the last homework assignment for PSY 409! This week is the easiest that I've done for this class. We just have to do a course evaluation on the class and also see what kind of advices and suggestions I may have for the future generational curriculum to come. This is it!
compare this to PSY 459
I think that Rayson, Diane and I have had an advantage for having two classes taught by Dr. James, we had almost the same homework assignments, we can link to our own lab reports from the other class, mainly, have a better view of looking at the Internet from two different prospectives. In my PSY 459 homework assignment, I basically said and mean the same. We are just the first generations in this class and we had no other homepages, lab reports and glossaries to view for ideas, therefore, I think that as for now, we did pretty good!
blood, sweat and tears
It certainly took 'BLOOD, SWEAT and TEARS' to accomplish this course. As you have noticed in my accomplishment paragraph for Traffic Psychology, for the last week, we not only sweated, but perspired a whole lot! ! Having to succeed at something that seems to take a lot of time, makes it all worthwhile to have even entered into a course like this, after seeing all the accomplishments that were done by you alone, along with the teacher's help. Now we can look back at these determinations and say 'Hey, I did that!' and be proud of it! !
need help?
Need help like I needed help in the beginning of the semester? ? Well, take a look at my little suggestions box that I created up. I hope that it may be of help to many of you, as the years goes on, more ideas and suggestions will be able to help the next generation more clearly. I think that we did all the hard work by using the trial and error methods for this class and for the Traffic Psychology class. There's another tip that I would like to share with you, don't look too hard at the computer for a long periond of time! Give yourself a break every so often to let your eyes focus else, then you can proceed with your assignments. Trust me, my eyes and neck ache when I get all tensed up when sitting at the computer for a very long time. Besides that. . . Hope you have fun with this! !
this is how I started
Seeing is believeing! ! Can you imagine that when I started with this class I was completely computer illiterate! ! Well, look at all of us now! ! We're making homepages on the World Wide Web for the whole world to see. I was so afraid of this course, fearing that I wouldn't be able to do well since the fact that I knew nothing about the Internet or about computers. But look at me now , I'm enjoying it! Soon enough I will be able to teach other children along with my own. This class not only enlightened me, but also allowed me to succeed in something that I had no clue about! ! That makes me feel great, the feeling of success! !
future generations to come
YES, Dr. James, you should continue your efforts into building a generational cyberspace document for other generations to come! ! I think you should look here on what I think you should do after you have successfully taught us about the Internet! Without your presistence and dedication to inspire us, we would have learned absolutely nothing. For the future generations, I would like to make a few suggestions to make before we leave. Also, it may be too much to ask for, but 90 minutes on the computer is way to little to work with. When I finally logon, that takes about 10 - 15 minutes of my time already to check my e-mail and to send mail out. By the time I start to actually get into my homework, it's already time to get off! What about having separate lines for those using the Internet vs. the dorm attendents? I get real discouraged when I try and try to get in and all I ever get is a busy signal, that may go on for about 90 minutes, the max for me so far. ARGH! ! !
and the award goes to. . .
We all get an award for accomplishing this course! Like I said in my awards goes to. . . category, we all tried hard, gave it our best, and someone of us never gave up! Even though I wanted to at the beginning, I'm really glad I stuck it out and gave it a try, and look how much we have absorbed!
