Well Robin I guess I'm also guilty of being addicted(sometimes) to risk taking behavior while driving also. I always seem to think I'm invincible when I drive. Like for some reason when I'm driving I don't think about how close I am in getting into an accident until I really get close. but until then I seem to drive like an idiot. For example: Two days ago I was in a rush to get to school. there was a lot of traffic on the way so I started playing race car driver; weaving in and out of cars without once checking my mirrors. Three times I almost ran into other cars that I didn't see merging in the opposite lanes because I wasn't checking. Pretty stupid of me. Anyways, after the last car almost hit me I started driving more cautiously. I seem to go through this invincibility cycle almost every day until I get close to an accident and then I'm cautious, but only for few hours and then I'm back at it again!!!!

It all started during my 6 years in Europe while I was in the Air Force. The people in the country that I was in (SPAIN), live on the philosophy that one can respect the laws without obeying. This is very much displayed on the roads and highways there. There are speed limit signs posted everywhere that no spaniard seem to see. Since I love to drive at high speeds, I quickly picked up on this habit along with taligating at 100mph, passing on the right shoulder or the median, dangerously passing a car on a two lane road with only split seconds to get back to my lane, and double or sometimes triple parking my car. I had a sense of real freedom since the police rarley enforced traffic laws. For the first time in my life I could drive as fast as I wanted without looking in the rear view mirror for a cop. If I did receive a ticket by some bored spanish cop that didn't like americans, I would get it in the mail and throw it away because I knew that the spanish govt. wouldn't dare come looking for an american airman for a traffic infraction(my superiors said so.

After six years I think I might of owed at least $3000 worth of tickets. Since I was part of a previeleged american military force, they were all overlooked like all tickets that are issued out to american GI's in foriegn contries.

Things are kind of different today. I was forced to extinguish most of my risk taking behaviors due to the fact that I would stand out like a sore thumb and be easily spotted by the cops. Also, I am an overpaid, drivers trainer for a nation-wide transportaion company that must preach defensive driving. But, once I am done at work for the day, I get in my car and continue taking the existing risks that I still haven't extinguished like speeding.

Well I guess I'm a risk taker when I drive. I mean how else would you describe a person that drives crazy like I do. I'm usually an alert driver, but sometimes when I have a lot on my mind I'd just go in my car and start driving. I would get so involved with what I have on my mind that I would forget that I'm on the road driving. I often end up running trough red lights and stop signs. Luckily I haven't hit any cars or people, and now that I think about it I came close to hitting a car once or twice already. Another risk that I take is that I've notice that I start weaving trough cars and I tend to cut them off very closely when I change into their lanes.. Isn't that stupid? I remember I made this car slam on his breaks for doing just that. Boy, was the driver of the car pissed off. Although I am not addicted to risk, I do find my self taking a lot of them.
