Section 3:

The first time using Netscape was an enjoyable experience. I found that the buttons were very straight forward and easy to use. The more frequently used options has buttons for easy access. The program is very user friendly. Using basic commands are not difficult to do without help.

The directory for Netscape has most of the main applications under it. One of these applications, which also has an easy access button, is What's New. This feature allows the user to see what kinds of things are new on the internet. These things can be anything that is new, such as newsgroups or new web pages. I did not explore this section for a very long time because to me everything was new. I decided to see what other options were available.

Another option button is Cool Stuff. This section has things from different subject areas which may be a big topic at the time. This section also has the cool site of the day. This is the site that someone, I don't know who, designates as the site of the day. A site which people can check out and see if they like. The first time I logged onto the internet, the cool site of the day was a Calvin & Hobbs site. It was interesting because it came from an engineering student from the University of Hawaii. It is so amazing that something that someone locally puts on the web can be viewed by people all over the world. This is such an amazing concept for me to grasp. I am sure that as time goes on, I will get more used to this fact and it will become second nature.

Two buttons that are very handy when using Netscape are stop and back. The stop button allows the user to know that the computer is still obtaining the information and to just wait. It is quite easy to see the red dot like a stop light so that the user knows that nothing is wrong, it is just processing. The back button is also very handy. It allows the user to go back to pages previously viewed. These pages do not take long to process because they have been previously called up. The back button is handy in the event that the user may want to jump back and forth on things already seen and new things.

The Netscape galleria is an area that can take quite a while to explore. The galleria is organized alphabetically by either subject or company. The user can view the list of things and select the desired subject. Within the subject selected, there are subdirectories. And within these subdirectories, there are more subdirectories. Just exploring the galleria can take hours and the user would barely look at a fraction of the subjects offered. I spent over three hours in the galleria alone and I only looked at two different subject areas.

The internet search is a way of finding information on a specific subject area in the net. All that is required to do an internet search is to input the subject matter and hit enter. The computer then shows a list of choices that pertain to the subject matter that was inputted into the computer. This method is much quicker than to look into the galleria to find a specific subject. The only thing that would be quicker to find a certain subject matter would be to input the address directly. But to do this the user would have to know the address before hand. If not, the net search is the next best thing.

I found that the Netscape program is very easy to navigate. The user buttons are straight forward, they say exactly what they do. Many of the commands are very similar, therfore making it an easy program to use. Once I got into the specific area I wanted to look into and read the information available, there was even more specific information available. All I had to do was to click on the blue words and it took me into the next page. It was that simple.

At first, before I started to use Netscape, I thought that it would be very difficult to go onto the internet. It seemed as though only people who were really computer literate could use the internet. Now more and more people are logging onto the internet and becoming more active in the computer age.

So far I have only started to touch the surface of what the internet has to offer. I think that there are so many people using the internet because there is something for everybody. Almost any subject matter you can think of, it is in a newsgroup. The newsgroups have so many topic areas, it could take days to actually view most of them. This is why I think that the internet is so popular. It does not get old, there is always something new to see. Things are always changing and people are always adding comments to old subject matters.

As of now, my experience on the internet has only been positive. I look forward to learning about all the other things the internet can offer me. There is so much more I want to learn about, I hope all the other aspects of the internet are just as fun and exciting as it has been so far.
