Let me tell you a story.
When the semester first started and we first went into our CSS accounts, I noticed some weird looking files in my directory. There were some ZIP files as well as a file on supnet and extra mail and news files. I reported it to Prof. James, but he did not know what they were. What made it especially weird was that the "rm" command could not remove them. A few weeks passed and I had not done anything about it because they were out of my way and it did not effect my programming in anyway.
A week ago, all of the classes accounts were disabled by the webmaster. Apparently someone was taking some of the accounts and doing illegal activities on them. After a few days of not being able to log in, I finally wrote to Prof. James. He forwarded my message to the webmaster and the webmaster wrote back. My accounts had been one of the accounts that had suspicious files in them. The ZIP files that were in my directory were copies of Windows 95. I was accused of either experimenting with zip flies or copying these files from other directories. Also that I was making copies of these files and selling them on the internet. The webmaster wrote the "he saw no reason for me to get my account back until I could explain these file".
I wrote to the webmaster and explained that I did not steal these files or were selling them and that I did not even know what a ZIP file was. He wrote back immediately and reinstated my account.
It was no fun being accuse of being a hacker especially when you don't know what a ZIP file is. I've always heard of hackers and some of the things that they were capable of doing, but I never expected to this happening to me. Now I am behind a week and am struggling to catch up with my schoolwork.
