By Julie Gersh

Instructions for this report are at:

Section A

Society is learning just how prevalent information literacy is every day. It is quickly becoming universal for learning institutions and homes to own computers and other like sources of information technology. It in becoming increasingly important for employees to possess computer knowledge in the work place and in many cases, that knowledge is a perquisite to get hired. I feel the purpose of this report is to enhance students’ knowledge of technology such that they are able to research and obtain information more readily and easily. Knowledge of this information will allow a person to succeed in their education, workplace, and in every day life. As part of this report, students are assigned to perform different tasks and ultimately create a webpage. They are also given the opportunity to identify their errors which generates more awareness and meticulousness from the student while performing the set tasks.

            List 1 – Sub-steps

1. To begin, I read the directions: step 1 through 5.

2. Double clicked on the Word icon.

3. Pressed “File”

4. Clicked on “Save as”.

5. Copied and pasted the document name from the instructions.

6. Replaced the “xx” with my last name.

7. Clicked “save”.

8. Pressed “Alt” and “Tab” at the same time to switch to the instructions page.

9. I right-clicked the link stated on step 3.

10. Clicked on “Open in New Window”.

11. Typed in my name, last name first, pressing the tab button in between typing.

12. I entered my email address in the next box after pressing the tab button.

13. Clicked on the “undergraduate” button.

14. Clicked “psychology” under the department list.

15. Typed “Psy 409a” in the first (1.) box.

16. Clicked on the yellow “Submit” button

            List 2 – Errors

1. My word processor automatically makes the first letter in the file name a capitol letter. As this was a requirement for this report, this was not a mistake on my part, rather something that is automated. To fix this problem, clicked on the start menu, pressed “My Documents”, right-clicked on the file name, pressed “rename”, and changed the letter. This worked whereas if I tried to change the file name in the word processor, it did not.

2. Rather than typing in my entire email address, I typed only the part before the @hawaii.edu (ie My email is gersh@hawaii.edu and I only typed “gersh”). In this case, I overlooked the fact that you must type “@hawaii.edu”. It was a simple error; but one that was easy to neglect to see.

Section B

British Journal of Social Psychology; March 2004, Vol. 43 Issue 1, p99, 14p

The research presented in this paper uses memory work as a method to explore six women's collective constructions of two embodied practices, sweating and pain. The paper identifies limitations in the ways in which social constructionist research has theorized the relationship between discourse and materiality, and it proposes an approach to the study of embodiment which enjoins, rather than bridges, the discursive and the non-discursive. The paper presents an analysis of 25 memories of sweating and pain which suggests that Cartesian dualism is central to the women's accounts of their experiences. However, such dualism does not operate as a stable organizing principle. Rather, it offers two strategies for the performance of a split between mind and body. The paper traces the ways in which dualism can be both functional and restrictive, and explores the tensions between these two forms. The paper concludes by identifying opportunities and limitations associated with memory work as a method for studying embodiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary:

This article discusses a dualistic idea of sweating and pain. The article also discussed memory and Cartesian dualism. Specifically, it discusses the prevalence of Cartesian dualism in six different women’s memories. It truly connects body, mind, and soul. I found this article a little confusing.

Summary:

Emanuel Swedenborg presented a relatively controversial idea: the conversion of science and religion. His teachings lead to the creation of the Academy of The New Church. The article presented gives an overview of his 25 papers which are separated into 8 sections. The book consists of stories and sections written by authors who were either influenced or who wrote about someone else who was influenced by Swedenborg’s work. It talks about God in a physical sense, rather than spiritual. Swedenborg presents a theistic way of thinking about religion.

Section G

Report 1 is clearly about information literacy. In other words, the purpose of this report is to enhance our knowledge of modern technology. There are three and four year olds who have a better grasp on computers than do adults. Because of this, it is our duty to learn and understand technology so we are better able to communicate and succeed in our future place of employment. Additionally, this information will be useful to teach our own children because ultimately, our children are the future. As I was familiar with the majority of the tasks required, I was unaccustomed with the use of FTP uploads. I am enthusiastic about using the World Wide Web and enhancing my own knowledge in the ever-growing subject.

Throughout the report, we were to search different websites all the meanwhile recording our order of action. This made me more aware of my behaviors and steps. I was a little more careful while following the directions so I did not have many errors. Simple actions like “copy and paste” were utilized while more complicated features like uploading and using FTP were also utilized throughout the report. Completing tasks separately week by week was helpful as I did not feel overwhelmed by the end.
