Report 1:
Monitoring My Information Behavior

By Ashley Hooks

Instructions for this report are at:
www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/leonpsy23/409a-g23-report1.htm

Introduction

This report is about my journey in creating and publishing a webpage and other documents for my course on the internet.  The course is a psychology seminar course at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  It is about the psychology of driving and information literacy.  The latter part is what this report is about.  I learned many new things about using the web by doing this report, even though I have been a web user for a long time.

Section A

My name is Ashley Hooks and I am a psychology major at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  I am a junior currently and I am very excited to study information literacy this semester, as well as more ways to use the web rather than just surfing it.  I have been using the web for a good amount of time, however I have never created a webpage; so, I am eager to learn how to do this.  I think that these skills will help me not only to succeed in this class, but to succeed in future semesters and out in the real world.  The steps I went through to complete my first task on information literacy was as follows:

  1.  I read through all the steps and sub-steps.

2.   Created a word processing file for my report.

(a) I clicked on Start

(b) Clicked on Microsoft Word

(c) Clicked on File

(d) Clicked on Save As

(e) Entered hooks-409a-g23-report1.doc as my file name

(f)  In “save as type” I chose web page

(g) Clicked on Save

3.   I registered as a lab user on campus at webdata.soc.Hawaii.edu/lab_user

      (a) I clicked on the link

(b) Put in my name

(c) Put in my email address

(d) Put in my type of request-a new user

(e) Put in undergraduate

(f) Put in my Academic Department which is Psychology

(g) Put in Psychology 409 as my only course that requires computer usage

(h) I clicked submit

(i) A screen popped up that said I would receive an email shortly afterwards

(j) I checked my email a little later on and my registration was successful

       4.   I wrote the first part of the report.

(a) I clicked on Start

(b) Clicked on My documents

(c) Chose my file named hooks-409a-g23-report1.doc

(d) Wrote an introduction about myself

(e) Wrote the sub-steps I went through to complete this first task

(f) Wrote a list of errors I made in the process

       5.   I sent an email to Dr. James the same day I completed this first assignment

(a) Clicked on Netscape Browser on my desktop

(b) Clicked on my shortcut to UH webmail

(c) Entered my username and password

(d) Clicked on compose

(e) Entered Dr. James’ email address

(f) Put “Completed Task 1” in the subject line

(g) In the body, wrote I completed task one, my name, and my section

(h) Clicked on Send

Errors

1.  An error I made during this first task was I went out of order on some of the steps.  I don’t know if it really affected my performance on this task, but one thing I did out of order was registering as a lab user.  I did this before I even read any of the other instructions.

2.  Another thing I did wrong was I wrote part of the report, saved it, and then came back to it later.  This made it harder to finish it because I had totally lost my train of thought when I came back to it, and had to read the instructions again.  Otherwise, I would say I was successful with my first assignment, and I hope to keep this pattern as I complete this first report, as well as learn more about information literacy.

Section B

Article 1 Abstract:

The research presented in this paper uses memory work as a method to explore six women’s collective constructions of two embodied practices, sweating and pain. The paper identifies limitations in the ways in which social constructionist research has theorized the relationship between discourse and materiality, and it proposes an approach to the study of embodiment which enjoins, rather than bridges, the discursive and the non-discursive. The paper presents an analysis of 25 memories of sweating and pain which suggests that Cartesian dualism is central to the women’s accounts of their experiences. However, such dualism does not operate as a stable organizing principle. Rather, it offers two strategies for the performance of a split between mind and body. The paper traces the ways in which dualism can be both functional and restrictive, and explores the tensions between these two forms. The paper concludes by identifiying opportunities and limitations associated with memory work as a method for studying embodiment.

This article researches embodiment, particularly the embodied practices of sweat and pain.  The research group was a group of women, and the idea tested was that of Cartesian dualism, or how sweating and pain are often associated with each other.  The research was to look at how the discursive was joined with the non-discursive;  Previous research did not focus on this.  The dualism of mind and body was thought by the researchers to be separate from materiality.  The type of research used was memory work, where the researchers actually looked back at their own memories, and explored their emotions in doing so.  The women chose to use the triggers of sweating and pain, because it created common memories.  They found that dualism can sometimes help to experience one’s body in helpful ways, but could also hinder the practice.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way on this subject, because I find it somewhat confusing.  I understand what the research is for, but I don’t agree or disagree with it.  I think that the mind and the body are related, and sometimes you can make yourself feel something like pain if you think you are in pain, so in a way I guess I lean towards the idea of the mind and body being related in many ways.

Article 2 Abstract:

Reviews the book “Swedenborg and his Influence,” edited by Erland J. Brock.

http://search.epnet.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=aph&an=9604085487

This article is fairly brief, and reviews the book Swedenborg and His Influence which is a book containing 25 papers about a Swedish scientist, theologian, and revelator, Emanuel Swedenborg.  This author talks about how the 25 different papers represented the diversity of Swedenborg’s accomplishments in life.  He identifies the different accomplishments and discusses how being a theologian and a scientist helped to come up with many new ideas in his lifetime.

I think this man, Swedenborg, had a very successful life.  In this brief article, the things that were reported that he believed in and his ideas about life seem very valid to me.  He believed that religion was a complete transformation of yourself and took a complete commitment, and I believe this idea to be true.

Section D

For my next assignment, I found a mailbox online at this URL:

http://www.outdoordecor.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/online-store/scstore/p-SASR-DUCK.html?L+scstore+qsdc1974ffde01de+1127634105

This mailbox was made in Massachusetts.  It has copper wrapped around steel.  It has a duck design and you can also personalize it when you order to have your own last name.  Both sides are identical, and it sits nicely on a wooden post.

List 2-Errors:

-I had a really hard time trying to upload my files at first.  I downloaded the FTP software just fine, however when I opened the software, I could not figure out how to create the folder that would connect me to the other classmate’s folders.  I did not know where to click on, and it was not clear to me in the instructions, where to put in the directory and password to upload files.  I got really frustrated, and quit for the day with it, and the next day revisited it.  I then discovered that you have to click on the button “new server” on the right hand side, and from there I easily proceeded on to upload all of my files.

Section G

Report 1 is about learning to publish things on the web, and the steps that you have to go to.  This is an important part of information literacy, because once you know how to upload things onto the internet, you can carry that into the rest of your life.  All of the tasks also helped you to practice things like searching the web for specific things, and how to search for articles online, etc.  I had hoped to learn more about how to use the web and I definitely learned a lot about following steps very closely.  I had no knowledge of how to create my own homepage and how to publish things and I know feel like I know a lot about it.

                 (c) I uploaded my first report by dragging it from my documents on the right to my folder on the left

                 (d) I then went to the class homepage in my browser and opened my report

     (e) I looked it over, checking for things like if the links worked, if I had spaces between all paragraphs, if the sections were clearly marked, and if there was any confusion over where         it ended or started.

4.  (a) I added a header to my report, giving its name, my name, and where the instructions for the report were located on the web

                 (b) I put the required links to my home page and to the class home page at the bottom of my report, by copying them from the class home page and pasting them onto my report

                 (c) I saved the new report by clicking the save button in Microsoft Word

     (d) I uploaded the latest version of my report on the web in the FTP commander by dragging it from the left side to the right side into my folder, hooks.
