Instructions for this report are at:

Introduction

This report is part of an assignment for the psychology class 409a, Driving Psychology which focuses on aspect of driving such as road rage. As part of gaining information literacy, we are required to set up a webpage and learn how to upload files and publish them on the web using FTP software.

 Section A

In this part of report one, I have set up and saved a word processor document that will be used for the remainder of report one. Included in this report are the steps I took to set up this document and the mistakes I made in the process. List one explains the sub-steps I had to go through, and list two explains the errors I made, including an explanation of why I made them.

List 1:

  1. Open Internet Explorer Browser and open Psy409 webpage
  2. Read instructions for report 1, task 1
  3. Click on link under step 3 to register as lab user: webdata.soc.hawaii.edu/lab_user
  4. In Microsoft Word save new document as: peltz-409a-g23-report1.doc
  5. Type introduction
  6. Type list 1
  7. Type list of mistakes for list 2 and save document
  8. Reread directions for task 1.

List 2:

  1. I incorrectly named the file peltz-409a-g23-report1 instead of peltz-409a-g23-report1.doc because I was concentrating on getting all the hyphens in the correct places.
  2. When typing list 1, I forgot to add the obvious of step one, turning on the computer, because I was thinking about all the steps required in saving a document
  3. I labeled list 2 as list 1 because my phone rang and I was distracted.

Section B

The research presented in this paper uses memory work as a method to explore six women's collective constructions of two embodied practices, sweating and pain. The paper identifies limitations in the ways in which social constructionist research has theorized the relationship between discourse and materiality, and it proposes an approach to the study of embodiment which enjoins, rather than bridges, the discursive and the non-discursive. The paper presents an analysis of 25 memories of sweating and pain which suggests that Cartesian dualism is central to the women's accounts of their experiences. However, such dualism does not operate as a stable organizing principle. Rather, it offers two strategies for the performance of a split between mind and body. The paper traces the ways in which dualism can be both functional and restrictive, and explores the tensions between these two forms. The paper concludes by identifiying opportunities and limitations associated with memory work as a method for studying embodiment

Summary: This paper seems to be about Cartesian dualism and embodiment, though I don’t know what exactly that means. I believe it could mean the split between body and mind as in the examples of sweating and pain the paper uses. It also examines how this dualism can be functional and also restrictive, which causes tension. When first reading the abstract, I felt I had no idea what it is about, but it sounds interesting.

The year 1988 marked the tricentennial of the birth of the Swedish scientist, theologian, and revelator Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg and His Influence consists of 25 papers originally presented at a symposium held by the Academy of the New Church which is founded on Swedenborg's teachings. The subject matter of these papers is as varied in content as were Swedenborg's activities in life. He had a long career as a scientist and inventor who made important contributions m the mining and metallurgical industries, devised a method for navigation based on the position of the moon, made contributions to the theory that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny in biology, founded and edited the first scientific journal in Sweden, and was undoubtedly among leading scientists in eighteenth century Europe.

Summary: This article celebrates the life of the scientist Emanuel Swedenborg and details his career and other contributions in life. He was a mad of much talent, not only as a scientist, but also in mining, navigation, biology, and theory. I have never heard of Emanuel Swedenborg, but his life seems interesting and I might like to know more about the man.

Section C

  14. Type summaries of articles and reactions to them
  15. Save work on document
  16. Reread instructions for task 2 of report 1 to verify work

List 2:

  1. I tried to use the UH library website basic search before I realized I had to sign in to the microlibrary EBSCOhost page. I made this mistake because I did not know that page existed as I am a new student here and had never used the online library system.
  2. I clicked on the first link found by the search, and realized it was incorrect when I noticed the volume and publishing date were important and different than that particular link.
  3. I tried to type in “journal for the scientific study of religion vol. 29” but that search did not produce any results. I did not know I couldn’t put the volume in with the title.
  4. For the British Journal of Psychology, I copied the first paragraph when I could have just copied the abstract without even looking at the full version of the article. I was an overachiever here.

Section D

http://www.gardenoaks.com/Mailboxes.html

Loon mailbox:

Shaded raised copper mailbox

Price: $140.00

Section E

List 1:

  1. Read directions for task 3
  2. Open report 1 document
  3. Open internet browser
  4. Search at google.com for “decorated copper mailbox”
  5. Search through found links for buyable mailboxes
  6. Find appropriate mailbox that is decorated, copper, and sits on a post
  7. Cut and copy link to report 1, along with picture of mailbox
  8. Reread directions for task 3
  9. Type list 1
  10. Type list 2

List 2:

  1. I first searched for “copper mailbox” and that search brought many results that were not useful, such as plain mailboxes. I realized that search was too broad, and then narrowed it down to “decorated copper mailbox” for more specific results.
  2. I looked through websites and found many copper mailboxes, but some were the type that you could mount on a wall, instead of a post. I once again did not have a narrow enough query so I narrowed my search down to “decorated copper mailbox + post.”
  3. I copied the link and photo, and pasted them into the document, but forgot to get the details of the mailbox, such as the price.

Section F

List 1:

  1. Read instructions for task 4
  2. Read instructions for FTP uploading
  3. Go to www.internet-soft.com/download.htm to get FTP software and download FTP commander
  4. Open FTP commander to run program

  9. Open peltz folder and upload those 2 files from my computer to the peltz folder
  10. Create homepage in Word Processing file and name it home.htm
  11. In FTP commander, upload home.htm to my peltz folder
  12. In web browser open my peltz homepage and verify that my home.htm link works

List 2:

  1. When first trying to download FTP software, I went to the UH website (http://www.hawaii.edu/help/software/pc/wsftp.html) to download the software and downloaded the wrong type (SSH), so then I had to uninstall it and find the other appropriate software, FTP commander at the website: www.internet-soft.com/download.htm.
  2. When trying to upload files, I at first did not know how I had to locate them in my computer and then click upload to get them into my folder because I didn’t read the instructions for uploading carefully enough.
  3. When making my home.htm file it was really ugly so when I finally looked at it in my web browser I wanted to change the style. I did not pay much attention to how it would look in an actual browser when I was making the document.

Section G

Report 1 is about acquiring the information technology skills involved in setting up a working home page and learning to use FTP software to upload files to this homepage. From this report I hope to have gained much more knowledge of how to create a homepage and publish files on the web, something of which I have never done.

  20. Check in web browser to see if changes are present and everything is correct

List 2

  1. After first trying to upload report 1 to my folder, I tried to view it in my web browser, but the file did not show up. I tried to refresh the page, but it still wasn’t there so I thought I had done something incorrectly and tried to remove it and upload it again. I waited a few minutes and checked in the web browser once more, and this time the document was there.
  2. My persistent links for the journal articles did not work, so I had to hyperlink them. I don’t know why they didn’t work at first.
  3. I noticed my report wasn’t as nice looking as I would have liked probably due to rushing or not paying enough attention to the layout when completing the tasks. This was remedied by proofreading the report again.
