Introduction:

Task #2

B)

Abstract #1- British Journal of Social Psychology; March 2004, Vol. 43 Issue 1, p99, 14p, 1

The research presented in this paper uses memory work as a method to explore six women's collective constructions of two embodied practices, sweating and pain. The paper identifies limitations in the ways in which social constructionist research has theorized the relationship between discourse and materiality, and it proposes an approach to the study of embodiment which enjoins, rather than bridges, the discursive and the non-discursive. The paper presents an analysis of 25 memories of sweating and pain which suggests that Cartesian dualism is central to the women's accounts of their experiences. However, such dualism does not operate as a stable organizing principle. Rather, it offers two strategies for the performance of a split between mind and body. The paper traces the ways in which dualism can be both functional and restrictive, and explores the tensions between these two forms. The paper concludes by identifying opportunities and limitations associated with memory work as a method for studying embodiment.

Response:

This article was about using the memories of women to figure out the Cartesian dualism or lack there of pain and sweating.  It shows both the positive and negative sides and the tension between both the mind and body.  I think that this article was interesting and I have my own opinions of the Cartesian dualism.  This article had an interesting take in studying both the mind and the body and the factors that effect the pain and sweating of the woman.

Abstract #2- Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion, June 1990, Vol. 29 Issue 2, p277, 2p

The year 1988 marked the tricentennial of the birth of the Swedish scientist, theologian, and revelator Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg and His Influence consist of 25 papers originally presented at a symposium held by the Academy of the New Church which is founded on Swedenborg's teachings. The subject matter of these papers is as varied in content as were Swedenborg's activities in life. He had a long career as a scientist and inventor who made important contributions m the mining and metallurgical industries, devised a method for navigation based on the position of the moon, made contributions to the theory that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny in biology, founded and edited the first scientific journal in Sweden, and was undoubtedly among leading scientists in eighteenth century Europe.

Response:

Swedenborg was a writer and a well known scientist in Sweden in the early eighteenth century in Europe.  He wrote a lot of books and had a great influence on Jacobism and freemasonry.  I thought that this article was dry and not very exciting.  It had a lot of facts, but nothing that really drew me into wanting to read more about him.

Task #5

G) This report was about reading directions carefully and putting them into action mostly on the internet.  It was very interesting experience for me because for the most part I am very computer literate.  Although I have never made a webpage with links, or created a home page, I figured I could do it.  Unfortunately I didn’t know how difficult it would be for me.  I learned a lot while doing this report; mostly patience.  I have also learned how stressful the internet can be.  Although I am generally really good about following directions, I learned to follow to a ‘T’.  I also learned how to monitor every single click and drag and ‘save’ button I pressed.  It made me more aware of my actions and errors that I made.
