Concept 1: Congressional Hearings

A.      Ricardo Martinez administrator of NHTSA reported to congress that the number of highway deaths was increasing significantly in the past four years, and the collisions due to aggressive driving cost the nation 150 billion dollars each year as well as many other facts.

B.       Within the “assertive” drivers group, people got riled up, especially supporters of the NMA.  These stats are very important for people to hear, and maybe start taking driving seriously.

C.      I chose this because it is interesting to me that more is not being done to protect our roads and the drivers on them.  I don’t understand why there has to be a debate about it.

Concept 2: Traffic Improvement Programs

  1. The Highway Safety Act of 1996 authorized the DOT to fund traffic improvement programs implemented by the state and local governments.
  2. Some of what the plan was to implement is:

1)      Curbing aggressive driving

2)      Reducing impaired driving

3)      Ensuring bicycle safety travel

  1. I think that this is a good plan and can help improve our roads

Concept 3:  Educating the Public

  1. Educating motorist and still enforcing the law is very important
  2. Many steps have been taken to inform the public such as billboards and questionnaires.
  3. I think that it is vitally important to inform the public that way they are more aware of the danger of driving as well as the positive aspects.
