Instructor: Dr. Leon James

Peter Rothe, Editor (2002). Driving Lessons: Exploring Systems That Make Traffic Safer. (Edmonton: University of Alberta Press). Reviewing pages 291-312.

A. Red Light Cameras

            1. They were designed to take pictures of drivers and vehicles that were violating traffic signals.

            2. It records date, time, and location with the picture of the car license plate and driver.

            3. It is important to today’s techno-policing.

            4. It is similar to the photo-radar system that detects cars driving over the speed limit.

B. Human Rights

            1. There is a debate that red light cameras violate human rights.

            2. Also, there is the question of whether other people are benefiting from this system like insurance companies and manufacturers.

            3. Still, red light cameras are justified because running red lights causes problems on the road and become dangerous to other humans.

C. My Opinion

            1. I believe that red light cameras in theory are a good system.

            2. They help to regulate people that like to speed and try to risk running a red light.

LINKS

1. Red Light Cameras : http://auto.howstuffworks.com/red-light-camera.htm - This is a website that explains what red light cameras are. They tell you how the camera works and what kind of tickets you could get for running a red light. It’s a good site for people who have never heard of red light cameras.

2. Fail to Reduce Accidents : http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/03/AR2005100301844.html - This article was written to show that although red light cameras may have helped reduce the number of tickets given for running a red light, the number of accidents has not been reduced. In fact, at some places, the number of accidents actually doubled.

3. Photo Enforced : http://www.photoenforced.com – This is a website that helps you locate red light cameras as well as speed cameras. You can look up your city and state and see where the cameras are located and how much the fine is. You can also submit new locations that you find yourself.
