Instructor: Dr. Leon James

Peter Rothe, Editor (2002). Driving Lessons: Exploring Systems That Make Traffic Safer. (Edmonton: University of Alberta Press). Reviewing pages 245-256.

A. Speeding and Safety

            1. There is debate about how speed influences accidents

            2. There is no doubt that speed influences the severity of an accident.

            3. There is debate about whether speed can help determine the probability of an accident.

B. Case-based Reasoning (CBR)

            1. You use past experiences to help solve new problems or issues.

            2. You are adapting old information.

C. Factors Influencing Driver Behavior With Respect to Speed

            1. Age and gender

            2. Attitude about speed limits

            3. Number of occupants in car

            4. Purpose and schedule of trip

            5. Type of vehicle

            6. Prior accident and speeding history

            7. Moving to an area with lower speeding limits

D. Integrating Case-based Reasoning Systems

            1. The argument is that speed is not the only factor in accidents

            2. Be able to determine factors like time that are dangerous and prone to accidents.

            3. Be able to locate areas that are dangerous and prone to accidents

1. What Causes Car Accidents? : http://www.smartmotorist.com/acc/acc.htm - This is an article in Smart Motorist that explains four different factors in car accidents. They say that 95% of accidents involve driver behavior as well as one of the three other factors. It was interesting that they emphasize the fact that drivers try to put the blame on other factors when it is almost always something they could have avoided.

2. Case-based Reasoning : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Case-based_reasoning - You can find a good definition of what case-based reasoning is at this website. It doesn’t directly relate it to driving but it’s the basic idea of using old solutions and adapting them to new problems.

3. GIS and Identifying Accident Locations : http://gis.esri.com/library/userconf/proc96/TO150/PAP105/P105.HTM - This article is about how geographic information systems can help to identify locations of high traffic accidents.
