I. Cara Lucey
A. Norms: An unwritten rule that
guides or regulates acceptable or appropriate behavior in a particular
situation
-a particular type of action is
expected of individuals within certain situations
-Ex: Men are less likely to ask
for directions .Women find it more comfortable to do
so.
B. Stereotypes: Stigmatic and
discriminatory labels that are placed on people
-
Majority of society has long held the belief that women should be
submissive and compliant.
- Women are Poor Drivers
- How did Stereotype come to be?
-- In Berger's(1986) essay on "Women Drivers," these ideas of "women drivers" were "attempts to keep women in their place.
-- idea that
women are lacking in the ability to care for themselves against outside forces
C. Expectations: Gender Roles
- Women are Submissive and Compliant; Men
are aggressive
-
If a car breaks down, it is more expected of a man to know what to do
- Expected of a woman to stand on
the side of the road until help arrives.
D. Yep, I did that, sorry, my bad
ladies…
II. Women are aggressive drivers too.
A. Christine Tomooka’s report.
- Christine looked at several
studies that though there may be a high correlation between men and women’s
self perception of driving, the actual ability to drive well is equal among the
sample.
- If studies were to discover
that men utilize different parts of the brain more frequently than women and
vice versa then we could possibly differentiate between gender specific traits
B. I think it should be Genderless on Aggression
III. Masculine &
Feminine Modes of Driving (Dr Driving)
A. Feminine
Mode
- More safer
-drives according to how it makes
passenger feel
- goal is
to create a safe feeling environment
B. Masculine
Feminine Mode
- More physical, requiring control
C. I
try to be feminine but it doesn’t always work out that way.
