I. Anatomy of an Epic of
Road Rage Tragedy
A.
Road Rage exchanges often begin as verbal...as silent or aloud accusations
1. which either peaks and
then decreases
2. OR, depending on circumstances, escalates further
into an anger cycle.
B.
Sometimes find yourself involved in an aggressive
exchange without being conscious of having done anything
1. which may be the result
of someone else’s outrage
2. feelings of innocence
lead to feelings of indignation and protest
C.
Often two drivers amplify and recycle combative emotions

II. Your Emotional Territory
A.
Emotional reactions are selective
B.
Emotional territory consists of all the things we value or believe strongly and
all t he things we would fight for it challenged. Two categories:
1. “Big things” Ex: religion and country
2. “Small things” Ex: pronunciation of a word, car
cleanliness, etc.
C.
“Automatic Self” is over critical, blaming, and ridiculing of other motorists
when first developing driving skills.
1. Makes emotional territory large
2. Any little thing can bother us
D.
Often can trace intensity of your emotion to pet peeves and irrational driving
rules.
III. Exercises
A.
Acting as If- acting like something doesn’t matter to you, even if you are
upset.
B.
Scenario Analysis to Modify Oppositional Thinking- Reading symptoms in column
of table 5.5 & identify what’s wrong with each.
C.Identifying Wrong Assumptions- Find wrong
assumptions in given paragraphs.
