II. Traffic Fatalities & Injuries

            A. Statistics

·        999,000 deaths in 1990

·        40,000 deaths/yr in U.S.

·        Over 40 million injuries world wide/yr

B. A leading cause of death

·        Leading cause of death for males 15-44

C. Injuries- over 40 million/yr

·        DALY (Disability-Adjusted Life Year)- “reflects time lost to premature mortality and time lived with disability”

 

 

 

 

·        9th leading cause in 1990

·        Leading cause of spinal and head injuries and paraplegia and quagriplegia

D. My opinion

 

III. Auto Safety…Has it Improved?

            A. Decline in death rate- 23-16/100,000

            B. Does that mean the number of deaths is low?

·        Increased auto use

·        Increased risk taking

C. Just how safe are we?
