A. Random acts of kindness by drivers: a cultural attempt to reduce and
reverse road rage and aggressive driving. By performing “random acts of
kindness” we can become supportive drivers and encourage supportive driving in
others
B. Examples of random acts of kindness
1. letting
someone in who has been waiting
2. speeding
up for just a little while to let other drivers behind you pass through
3. giving
a courtesy wave when someone does something nice to you
C. My Opinion: I always try to be a kind driver. One reason is that
through being supportive of others you are ensuring more safety for yourself.
Another reason is I also like the feeling I get when I do something nice for
another driver. I hope that one day the favor may be returned when I need to
get into a lane with a long line of cars!
II. Passenger Human Rights
A. Contrary to popular belief passengers in vehicles have rights too.
By ignoring their concerns or requests we are in essence violating their human
rights as passengers.
B. As drivers we have to be aware that the safety of our passengers is
in our hands. If we are performing an act that makes them fear for their safety
we should reconsider. On the contrary drivers should not allow passengers to
persuade them to perform illegal acts. By remembering that we are the one in
control of the car and others’ safety we can maintain our integrity as drivers.
C. My Opinion: I really agree with the book on this topic. I believe
that drivers should respect the rights of their passengers without succumbing to
pressure to perform unsafe acts.
III. How Passenger-Friendly are You?
Checklist
1. I always consider my passenger’s feelings
2. I adjust my driving to accommodate my passengers’ comfort
3. I let my passengers influence my driving for the better
4. I want my passengers to think of me as a good and safe driver
5. I try to avoid making driving mistakes even more when I have
passengers
6. I think that passengers should just sit back, relax, and leave the
driving to me. But if they feel more comfortable participating, I let them if
it’s safe
7. My passengers can control the air conditioning and the windows
8. Passengers have the rights to criticize the driver’s behavior
9. I want my passengers to be grateful and show appreciation, but if
they don’t I won’t resent it or hold it against them
10. My passengers can select the music
