I. Why do we even need emotional intelligence?
a. Seemingly trivial light aggressive events can easily end in gruesome violence.
i. Due to the aggressive action one can suffer from deep regret, embarrassment, financial loss, depression, injury, or death.
ii. Natural escalation of angry aggression occurs if unchecked.
b. Opinion
i. Aggression is everywhere and will not be stopped; however I think it can be controlled.
ii. Television
iii. On the road
iv. At home
c. Example
i. The story we discussed in class about the lady who was parked in by another lady.
ii. Began with slight aggression and ended with violence.
II. Difficulty of over coming anger
a. It is common in this culture to witness displays of physical and verbal aggression at every level of society
b. Failure to realize there are more choices than “fight” or “flight”
c. Opinion
i. I think too many people do not realize that they are often the source or a major cause to the problem.
ii. Many see it as if you don’t fight then you won’t win; where in reality it is usually the opposite.
d. Example
i. A boy at my apartment believes there is no other way than fighting. He has gotten into much trouble; and still continues to use this way of resistance.
III. 3 Levels of Emotional Intelligence
a. Emotional explosions are literally “neural hijackings” because these feelings occur in the brain especially the amygdala (i.e. the seat of passion)
i. Level One – Oppositional Driving
ii. Level Two – Defensive Driving
iii. Level Three – Supportive Driving
b. Opinion
i. After taking a Biopsychology course I can defiantly understand why passion is so difficult to recognize and control.
c. Example
i. Because we are the most intelligent species on the planet, it is difficult to study animal’s sense of “fight or flight” and forget that we can cognitively have different beliefs and ways of handling anger and aggression.
