Section
A:
(a.) I
am a psych major senior about to graduate but, I found myself having one class
left to take, and I chose Dr James’ class on Road Rage. Little did I know that this would involve
getting online and creating my own webpage, something I have never even
contemplated doing. However, here I am,
writing a report that will be seen by at least one person, Dr. James, about
road rage and what the people that came before me thought about when performing
the same tasks that I am about to do.
(b.)
Sean Arakaki (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409bs2003/arakaki/research.htm)
(i.) Sean felt that all students seemed to fall into four categories that he came up with in order to explain how each students went through the first step of their reports.
(ii.) His thought were that everyone fell into a phase of uncertainty and frustration, clarity and motivation, mastery, and finally reflection. He thought that it would be easier to identify all the people he would be studying by fitting them into his four phases.
(iii.) It seems that what he was doing is similar to what I am doing now which is going over previous generations reports and finding out what they thought about the tasks that they were given in order to see if their was a similarity between them and him.
(iv.) He concluded that the reason each person decides to go through with the first step is relative to each individual. He also concluded that each person seems to go through the same steps in order to master the internet.
(v.) I think that by reading all of their feelings about wanting to quit made me realize that I had to work harder in order to be able to finish this class and hopefully come out with something of value that they found through all of their hard work.
Renae Mendez (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409bs2003/mendez/researchreport.htm)
(i.) It seems that Renae felt happy about having this opportunity to learn from all of the other students that were online and finding out how they went about, accomplishing tasks similar to her own.
(ii.) Renae thought that reviewing other students past reports showed that the online community was a very valuable asset when learning new complicated skills, such as learning to use the internet.
(iii.) Like Sean, Renae seems to be looking and reviewing others people’s past reports in order to gain an understanding of what it is she is doing now. This may help her come up with new ideas on dealing with her own report.
(iv.) Renae concluded that she learned a lot from the other people that she was told to study and found that by reviewing these previous generations she was able to help herself in dealing with the tasks that were set before her.
(v.) At first when I read that I had to read other people’s reports I thought that that was kind of a waste of time. But, after reading her thoughts on how much it helped her I am able to see it in a new light and I am trying to use these other sources to help me anywhere they can.
Hae Lin Han (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2003/han/report1.htm)
(i.) It seems that Hae felt that she was being pressured by all of the things that she had to do. Instead of looking at one thing at a time she tried to do everything and ended up feeling overwhelmed.
(ii.) She seemed to think that every part of her task one was going to be easy and then she kept making mistakes. I believe that this was because she already felt overwhelmed and thus she was not thinking clearly when she was doing her sub-tasks.
(iii.) Her tasks were simple, registering for the class and sending Dr. James and e-mail. Very similar to the task that we have been given this time as well.
(iv.) She concluded that by making a mistake she realized what the reason was for doing these tasks that Dr. James had laid out for her. She also was able to learn quite a bit about herself that will enable her to do a better job next time.
(v.) I think in some ways that I am like her, I see the whole thing at once and I decide that I don’t feel like doing it right now. I end up putting it off until it is to late, rather than just trying to take it one step at a time.
Jill Umetsu (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/jumetsu/report2.html)
(i.) Jill Umetsu seemed to be unfamiliar with computers. This caused her to feel confused as well as intimidated. As I said before people with not a lot of experience with computers will end up finding this first task difficult and feel confused.
(ii.) She seems to think that the internet is this scary place that you have to have lots of experience in to fully understand how to use it. I guess she is probably right, I guess it is hard for me to remember because I have been using the internet for years and I can’t remember what it was like to be just starting.
(iii.) It seems like her first task was to learn how to use the internet. She also wrote about what previous generations felt when they were faced with a similar task, just as I am doing now.
(iv.) Jill concluded that many people are always in the same boat as you are when starting something new, so you should just try you best and not worry about not getting it right away, but if you keep working you will find that it is a wonderful source for knowledge and quite easy to use once you get used to it.
(v.) I couldn’t really see how her insights really worked with me because I already knew what I was doing in this project and it was not that difficult for me at all. I did not have to worry about all of these feelings of confusion because I had gone through all of this before.
Section: B
Article 1:
Abstract: The research presented in this paper uses memory work as a method to explore six women's collective constructions of two embodied practices, sweating and pain. The paper identifies limitations in the ways in which social constructionist research has theorized the relationship between discourse and materiality, and it proposes an approach to the study of embodiment which enjoins, rather than bridges, the discursive and the non-discursive. The paper presents an analysis of 25 memories of sweating and pain which suggests that Cartesian dualism is central to the women's accounts of their experiences. However, such dualism does not operate as a stable organizing principle. Rather, it offers two strategies for the performance of a split between mind and body. The paper traces the ways in which dualism can be both functional and restrictive, and explores the tensions between these two forms. The paper concludes by identifiying opportunities and limitations associated with memory work as a method for studying embodiment.

Summary: This article seems to be finding out whether the mind and the body are separate or together. They go about doing this through memory work. By going over certain memories they are able to see whether the mind and body are one. They use two examples for this. One was memories of sweating, and the other was memory of pain. They tried to explain these memories and find out whether they focus just on the mind or on the body and mind. In the sweating memories they found that people talked about the body with little emotion thrown in. Thus the mind and body were separate. For the memories of pain they also found that the mind and body were separate possible in order for the mind to free itself from the pained body. I found this article to be almost completely unreadable. For the average person they would most likely struggle throughout this whole article. The people who wrote it, wrote it for those that already have an understanding about what they are talking about because they really did not do a good job explaining it so that the average person could understand, this includes me.
Article 2
Paragraph 1: The year 1988 marked the tricentennial of the birth of the Swedish scientist, theologian,
and revelator Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg
and His Influence consists of 25 papers originally
presented at a symposium held by the Academy of the
Link: http://search.epnet.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=aph&an=9604085487
Summary: This article is reviewing a book about Swedenborg and his life as a scientist. It briefly discusses what some of the book chapters are about and also discusses some of the people that were influenced by Swedenborg. I don’t quite understand what this article has to do with road rage psychology. But I just follow orders.
Section C:
Hae Lin Han (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2003/han/report2.htm)
(i.) Hae says that she enjoyed doing the research about the terms that she was given. She felt happy about her subjects and was therefore in a good mood to accomplish them.
(ii.) Hae thought about all the progress she had been making through the class and this caused her to feel very confident in completing all of her assignments. She thought quite a lot about what it was about herself that was causing her to make errors and then she discusses what she did about it.
(iii.) It seems that she had to post messages on a board for all of her classmates to read. She was given an assigned topic that she was supposed to research and then relate what she learned to her fellow peers.
(iv.) She concludes that there are man negative aspects about herself that she is completely unaware of. They have been brought to the surface due to her recent attempts at completing the tasks that Dr. James gave to her.
(v.) Once again after reading this I did not really see how her insights really helped me to accomplish my present task. I don’t really remember any situations where some of my negative aspects cropped up to hinder me in completing my task.
Jacquelyn Lim (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2003/lim/report1.htm)
(i.) Jacquelyn seems to feel very confident in her task because she believes that this will be quite easy. This confidence stems from the fact that she has used webct before and is therefore quite confident that she will have what it takes to complete her assignment.
(ii.) She thought that even though she stumbled a little the first time she did this it would not present a problem. Her overwhelming confidence in her abilities in this area caused her to skip right over the problem and continue on.
(iii.) Her task was to research ideas that she was given and then post her finding on WebCt for all of her fellow students to read and learn.
(iv.) Her conclusions seemed to be about some of her negative aspects that she found out about herself while doing these various tasks. She concluded that she tended to rush. She also get frustrated and then goes about blaming other things instead of herself.
(v.) I must say that after reading about some of her problems, I find that I feel the same way. By looking and analyzing myself as she has I am able to start working on correcting these negative aspects. This will help me on the future tasks that I will be performing.
Jacquelyn Lim (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2003/lim/report2.htm)
(i.) It seems that throughout this task that she is trying to accomplish she keeps feeling irritated by all of the things that she is made to do. This might be because she doesn’t really want to do these tasks, or that she is finding them to be tedious.
(ii.) She seems to think that these tasks are very easy, thus she ends up underestimating them or just forgetting to turn them in on time because she feels that she can put them off due to their ease. These thoughts are going to end up getting her into trouble.
(iii.) It seems that her task was to write about the things that she encountered while doing her webct postings. She did research and then posted her findings onto webct for her fellow students.
(iv.) She concludes that this task was useful because of how important computers are to society now and people need to learn about them if the want to make it in this world. She also concludes that humans need to learn to control themselves in order to not get themselves into trouble. This task seems to have helped her in learning to control herself.
(v.) She gives the advice to not procrastinate and I found this very useful in how I dealt with this task because I was in the same boat. I did procrastinate and I realize that that is not good. It is one of the things that I really have to work on in order to make sure that I complete my tasks on time.
Carol N. Ohta (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/cohta/409/409report2.html)
(i.) Even though Carol is a veteran of the internet she still ends up feeling confused, frustrated, doubtful, and anxious. The internet is so big and technology has moved up so much that even if you know things about it now, it is constantly changing and you have so much that you still have to learn.
(ii.) She has this thought that the internet is sometimes magical because she can be trying to figure something out and then she does something that she may not even understand, but poof it suddenly works, like magic.
(iii.) In order to learn the internet she had to make sure that she kept up with all the work in order to keep her from feeling anxious and stressed out.
(iv.) She concludes that when doing the reports you just have to ignore the stress and pressure that you will undoubtedly be feeling and just concentrate on getting everything turned in on time because you can always adjust it once it is up.
(v.) I must say that after reading her report I think that what she says is useful in completing tasks. You really have to focus on getting everything done on time. I have not done that and that is where all my problems are coming from.

Section E:
Carol N. Ohta (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/cohta/459/report2.html)
(i.) Carol felt very fearful about having to use the computer in order to use the internet. Her only experience of using a computer was writing papers on Microsoft word and this lack of experience caused her to fear the unknown.
(ii.) She’s funny because after she had sent the e-mail to Dr. James she thought that everything was going to be as easy as that but little did she know that this was just the tip of the iceberg. But I guess that is better than knowing that it might be a little difficult and stressing out about it.
(iii.) It seems that this class was all about learning how to put file on the internet and then write a report on the steps and how you felt about each step.
(iv.) She concludes that she learned that she was so resistant to computers because she was really just resistant to learning new stuff. It is easy to understand how seeing a computer and trying to learn new things about it can be kind of intimidating. She has obviously learned that it is possible if you take it one step at a time.
(v.) I guess that what I take out of her report is the fact that even though you may not know how to do anything if you keep trying it will come. For example I am kind of worried about making my webpage since I have never done this before.
Carol N. Ohta (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/cohta/409/409report1.html)
(i.) She seems to feel frustrated and irritated because things don’t work out quite right. I noticed that a lot of the other people also seemed to feel this way as well. I guess that comes from trying something for the first time.
(ii.) She thinks that the interesting part of this generational way of teaching is that she can get to see the step by step process of all the students that came before her and possibly learn from them.
(iii.) It seems that she is learning to create an interesting homepage which seems to be something that she has done in the other classes she has taken. She definitely doesn’t seem to be as bothered by all this computer stuff like she was in her last report that I covered.
(iv.) She seems to be realizing that she doesn’t know as much about the internet as she would like, but it also sounds like she is going to keep working to learn more about it. I think that she really got a sense of appreciation for the internet after taking this class.
(v.) Once again this person is talking about procrastination and that is still my big problem. After reading some many people writing don’t wait get everything done on time I still have not been able to take their advice to heart. This is something that I still have to work on.
Shane Cobb-Adams' (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/459f96/cobb/psy409a/report2.html)
(i.) Shane at first felt overwhelmed by all the topics and different commands that you have to use. But soon he was able to learn what it was he had to do get everything under control.
(ii.) He thinks that the generational curriculum is very useful because it gives you the benefit of all the others thinking that came before you. You are able to see how they did it and this helps you come up with ways to possibly improve on their ideas.
(iii.) Shane, like us, is learning how to use the internet and because of the “Generation Curriculum” he is able to learn how to use the internet that much quicker.
(iv.) Shane thinks that you should “never feel like you don’t understand” because this causes you to think that you can’t do whatever it is that you have to. If you go in defeated then that is exactly how you are going to come out of it.
(v.) I think that Shane is right, you have to really look at what the people before you did in order to better prepare you for where you are heading. By reading all of the previous students reports I am better able to write this one.
G. Andrews (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/gandrews/report2.html)
(i.)
Andrews feels proud that she was able to complete all of the work. She also feels glad that she stuck with it
because of her end product.
(ii.) Andrews thinks
that there is definitely something good about working in the cyber
community. She believes that by working
on it all together it is better and much easier. Like they say two heads are better than
one.
(iii.) Andrews seems
to like working with her peers and as a result she was able to finish things
much easier and quicker. Her homepage is
amazing, it looks like it would take hours just to see it all.
(iv.) Andrews seems
to think that because she worked with so many other people that the originality
of her work would be gone. I think that
no matter what, when everyone is doing the same thing, overlapping is going to
happen and this isn’t going to be possible to stop.
(v.) I think that
the one thing that I took out of this is that I should really pay more
attention to what other people have done and use that to help get me started,
not copy it but get an idea and use that to formulate my own ideas.
Section F:
G. Andrews (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/gandrews/report1.html)
(i.)
She seems to be frustrated because even though it seems like whatever she is doing
should work it doesn’t. I remember when
I was taking programming I found that to be the case in almost every program I
ever wrote. That is what the computer is
like, you can’t change it, we almost all use it, but very few of us really know
all the details that make it work.
(ii.) Once again she
talks about how she thinks that being a team player is really beneficial to
getting things accomplished.
(iii.) It seems that
she is discussing what it is like to be part of the cyber community and almost
trying to pitch to all of us who have not found the wonder that is the cyber
community.
(iv.) Andrews like
in her second report found that teamwork is the most efficient way to get
things done.
(v.) Since teamwork
is not really something that we do in my class this semester I did not really
find her insights to be useful to my tasks whatsoever, although, the idea is a
nice one.
M. Heather Piper (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409as2003/piper/g18research.htm)
(i.)
Piper feels frustrated by all of the tediousness of writing her self
observations down. I guess that is to be
expected because doing the same thing over and over again can get you a little
irritated.
(ii.) Piper feels
that just understand how to properly phrase what you are looking for in the
search engine can dramatically change the results that you get. I must agree with her because when I am
looking for something online I have to keep rewording what I am trying to find
in order to reach my goal.
(iii.) It seems that
Piper had a bunch of questions that she had to answer on top of her self
observations. She also had to review
other peoples’ assignments from previous generations.
(iv.) She believe
that this generation curriculum is good because each year the students change
thus bringing in new ideas and improving on the old ones.
(v.) I found that Piper’s idea on just changing
the wording to find things in search engines is very useful. I used to give up if I couldn’t find what I
was looking for but now I just rearrange and there it is.
Ryan Mitsui (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/459f96/rmitsui/409/reports/report2.html)
(i.) Ryan feels that at first learning the new things for the internet is difficult but because everyone is in the same boat you learn to get along and help teach each other how to go about getting it done.
(ii.) Ryan thinks that there are three phases to learning the internet. First confusion, second, resistance, and third the Spider Man Phase. I especially like the Spider Man Phase it is pretty funny to think about it that way.
(iii.) Ryan was able to learn the internet by interacting in the cyber community thus getting information from all those with him and all those before him.
(iv.) Ryan concludes that it is good to be able to read the past generations feelings of despair so that when you feel the same way you know that others also felt like you and succeeded in completing the task at hand.
(v.) I think that that is a good message, if you think about quitting just think about all of those that thought the same thing but kept on going and managed to complete theirs. I can relate because I was kind of lagging and feeling like I couldn’t go on but after reading this I have to because I don’t want to be one of the only ones to have failed, I want to feel success as they have.
Christine Marchadie (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/march/409/report2.html)
(i.) Christine felt stress by taking this class and she seemed kind of surprised that she did. I guess she must be calm under normal conditions but this kind of a class could wear anyone down.
(ii.) Christine thinks that it is very beneficial to learn in cyber community rather than learning all by your self. I don’t know if I agree with her, I always found that I worked much better on my own.
(iii.) Christine found the she was able to just surf the net and learn just by doing that. She found that a whole wide world opened up for her, once she started she couldn’t stop for anything.
(iv.) She thinks that although this may seem easy you should giver yourself a lot of time to get these reports done. Don’t put everything off until the last moment because then the class will no longer be easy.
(v.) Like many of the others her ideas that procrastination is bad is valid but when you have procrastinated your whole life it is kind of hard to stop. It is just like when you start with one little lie and then it just keeps adding up and adding up.
Section G:
Michelle Alonzo (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/malonzo/report2.html)
(i.) Michelle feels a great sense of accomplishment for have finished her report and this is something that I hope I feel when mine is done as well.
(ii.) Michelle thinks that there are five steps to learning the internet. First frustration and anger, second defeat, third you see a glimmer of light, fourth motivation, and last the fifth step is a feeling of success.
(iii.) Michelle followed her five steps to learning the internet and in the end she was able to enjoy that feeling of success when her webpage was up and she had finisher her report.
(iv.) Michelle believes that if you do not keep in practice with what you have learned from the class that you will forget much of what you had learned. However I don’t understand how anyone after getting a taste of the internet could ever not practice it.
(v.) Like just about every other person before her, including me, she talks about how procrastination is really going to kick you in the pants if you don’t stay on top of it, but I realized that if I haven’t changed by now I don’t know if I can.
Michelle Alonzo (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/malonzo/report1.html)
(i.) Michelle felt that one of the best parts about this class was being able to go back and see what others in the past had done. She found this to be fun and interesting.
( ii.) Michelle marvels at how looking back into past generations she can see how the technology has changed over the years I think that this is a very interesting way to look at things because when I think back to some of the past generations I start to wonder what they had to use back then and how it must have been more difficult for them.
(iii.) She went back a learned from our “ancestors” and by seeing what they had done she was able to come up with a style that was all her own.
(iv.) She concludes that although cyberspace has negative aspects to it, the good far outweighs the bad. She says that through the internet we are able to touch businesses, hospitals, and even attend classes all from the comfort of our nice safe little homes.
(v.) Michelle sees cyberspace as this great place to be where everything is just a button push away but it is just playing into the fact that American society is just becoming full of people who are getting lazier and lazier. People now don’t even have to react to each other face to face, they can fall in love over the internet just like my sister did. I am just saddened when I think about this.
Kai Hansjurgen (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/hansjurg/reports/Report2a.html)
(i.) Kai was very anxious and nervous about getting started. These feelings were so strong that they eventually turned into fear.
(ii.) Kai seemed to believe that there were four aspects to learning how to use the internet. Fear was first, frustration was the second, followed by information overload, and getting motivated with a chance of becoming addicted.
(iii.) Kai started out not knowing much in the way of the internet but soon that changed and he found that he had trouble doing the class work because he wanted to probe more deeply into graphics.
(iv.) In conclusion Kai realized that although it was good to get so into what he was doing in class, he first had to focus on the things that he had to do and then he could fool around with making it better after is work was completed.
(v.) I learned that you can’t get distracted by other things, you will have plenty of time for those other things but you have to get your priorities taken care of first. This is something that I didn’t do, I would jump ahead and do the things that I thought were interesting first instead of starting slow.
Shawna Honeycutt (http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/honeycut/report2.html)
(i.) Shawna felt happy that she had gone to class because she was relieved to see that she was not the only one that didn’t have a clue as to what they were doing. It is interesting that at times like this sometimes looking at others peoples miseries really has an uplifting quality.
(ii.) She thought that once she just got it down a little, that all the stress would go away and she could just happily type with no worries. And it turned out that that was exactly what happened for her.
(iii.) She found that when learning to use the internet that being able to see what other people before her did really helped her in learning how to accomplish her tasks.
(iv.) In conclusion she says that the cyber community has a lot of ups and downs, but she felt that there were definitely more ups.
(v.) I have to agree with her, there is a lot to be said about the cyber community but I still feel that it is to cold and distant, even when working with others you just don’t get the same feelings as seeing someone face to face.
Section H:
This is supposed to be the big
summary about what it is that I have been doing for the last two months so here
I go. I have been asked to do five
separate tasks all designed to help teach me how to become more proficient in
using the internet. I learned through a
variety of tasks how to find documents, shop, and create and upload stuff to my
very own webpage. Of course I had a lot
of help, what with all of the previous generations reports that I had to read
and comment on I was able to complete all of the tasks given to me. This was by far a difficult process to go
through, mainly because you really have to be good at staying on top of things
without a lot of pushing from the teacher.
If you let everything go till the end like me you are going to find
yourself blind and pretty much losing what little sanity you had to begin
with. I did find that after having to
discuss what twenty people from previous generations felt while doing their
reports I had to bang my head against the wall just to cope with all the
“feelings” that were floating around inside there. Oh and I can’t forget to mention the search
for the copper mailbox. Now that was a
fun break in the monotony of feelings that I went through. I must admit that the mailbox that I picked
out would be perfect for my house but I never realized that they could cost so
much. Anyway that about covers the long
process that I went through in order to bring this report for your viewing
pleasure. So all I can say is I really
hope you all read it so that I can pass my wisdom on to those that follow.
Section I:
Finally, the last section of this
report will cover what I need to tell everyone that comes after me so that they
have some idea of how they can avoid the nightmare that I had writing this
thing. The first thing that I must
STRESS is get things done on time, never let them pile up because if you don’t
feel like doing it at the time, once you see all that you do have to do you are
going to wish that there is someway that you can go back in time and do them
week by week. The second thing that I
have to say is, don’t think about it excessively, just let it flow and try not
to spend too much time trying to figure out the perfect thing to say. Last but not least, try to improve on what we
have done so that you can contribute something of your own to all those that
will follow you just as I have not really done now.
