Combating Aggressive Driving

I. Federal Agencies Unite Against Aggressive Driving

A. This year 40000 people will lose their lives on the highway and more than 3 million will go to the hospital with an economic loss of over 200 million dollars.

 

B. Proposed the National Economic Crossroads Transportation Efficiency Act.

           

C. Assembled a group of national safety experts to implement a plan to deal with areas of aggressive driving.

 

II. Aggressive Police Initiatives

A. Safety legislation in vehicle and highway design has played a crucial role in reducing the number and severity of highway injuries.

 

B. Communities have responded to aggressive driving by initiating aggressive enforcement programs to reduce illegal driving behavior.

 

C. The Roadwatch program, which began in Ontario, combines citizen observations with law enforcement.

 

III. Aggressive Driving Bills

A. Several aggressive driving bills have been approved and several more are being introduced.

 

B. Now police officers must be able to identify the aggressive driver’s behavior.

 

C. In order to identify aggressive driving through observed violations, the language of these offences must be behavioral, that describe the observable behavior of drivers, not their motives or intentions.
