I. Teenagers at Risk
a. Car crashes kill more people between the ages of 15 to 20 years old.
b. About 14% of drivers involved in car crashes are in 1996 are in that age group.
c. Teenagers tend to engage in more risky behaviors.
d. What some states have done in order to bring down the statistics.
i. They have instituted a graduated licensing program that has several steps.
1. learner’s permit
a. at age 15-16, young driver’s must be supervised by an adult
b. pass a driver education course
c. remain citation free
2. intermediate or provisional license
a. on-road testing
b. requirement to remain citation free for the license period
3. full license
II. Driver-Zed
a. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety created the “Driver-zed” program.
b. The foundation developed a new program in response for better training for teens.
c. It’s a CD-ROM program that focuses on teaching appropriate risk management.
d. The AAA evaluated the program under real driving conditions and showed to produce a statistically significant improvement of risk management for young teens.
e. Driver education shifts the focus from just safety knowledge to a more integrated driver education that imparts affective or emotional skills
f. Driver education can also alert people to the personality factors that take over our driving skills.
III. Driving Psychology Curriculum
a. New aggressive driving laws that increase misdemeanors to felonies.
b. Lifelong driver education is installed into the K-12 curriculum.
c. The lifelong driver education curriculum must employ findings from psychology about human development.
d. Good driving requires that we prevent mistakes and suppressing irrational judgments.
e. Lifelong driving education focuses on make the three selves (affective, cognitive, and sensorimotor) stronger and more stable.
