Introduction

Blessings!  This report encompasses a multitude of past generations trials, tribulations, rewards and accomplishments of overcoming stress, anxieties, frustrations and fears in the journey of becoming Internet Literate.  What will it take to successfully complete these tedious tasks?  Perseverance!  Struggle to overcome; and you will see growth, wisdom and experience flourish at a rapid rate.  Buena suerte! (good luck)

Sean Arakaki

Developmental Learning Theory of the Internet

http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409bs2003/arakaki/research.htm

Feelings

It was compelling to see the "before and after" attitude of Arakaki as he progressed.  I could see that he wanted to persevere.  He wanted to "stick it out."

Thoughts-- "Bad Mood"

Part of Arakaki's research was to gather data in which he had to complete on-line research and fill out forms. He states that it was a very tedious task and that it often placed him in a "bad mood."

Task

Arakaki's task was to learn how to use the Internet and use its benefits to research past generation feelings, thoughts and experiences and post them by typing and creating a web page.

Conclusion

Arakaki felt that he had a "pretty good" information behavior.  He adds that he had acquired many abilities that enabled him to be a more effective researcher and information gatherer.  Arakaki states, "...I can accomplish anything I set my mind to."

Insight

I am utterly grateful for Arakaki's research and insights. There is a similarity that he and I share.  I too, will "stick it out" even though I may not understand what is asked of me.

Shawna Honeycutt

Developmental patterns for learning the Internet

http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/honeycut/report2.html

Feelings

Honeycutt stated that she felt prideful when came to Internet literacy.  She believed that she was "savvy."  Soon after she started her task, she realized that she was sorely mistaken.  She adds by saying that she felt like "banging" her head out of frustration.  This feeling occurred throughout the entire semester.

Thoughts

Honeycutt explained that although she continued to have difficulties, she realized that "other" things were distracting her.  She then realized that she needed to be more focused.

Task

Honeycutt's task was to learn how to use the Internet and use its benefits to research past generation feelings, thoughts and experiences and post them by typing and creating a web page.

Conclusion

Honeycutt felt that the overall experience had more benefits than hardships.

Insight

Honeycutt's conclusion hit it write on the head.  "It was also nice that we could learn what to do by what others have done before," Honeycutt stated.  Exactly what I felt.  I could have not said it any better.

Michelle Alonzo

Developmental patterns for learning the Internet- Report 2

http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/malonzo/report2.html

Feelings

Alonzo stated that she felt frustrated and angry while using the computer.  Although she had some prior experience using the computer, she says that learning to "do" something for the first time such as her assignment still elicited frustration.

Thoughts

Alonzo felt like quitting and dropping the class.  She also stated that frustration might have led other generations to copy other peers' work.

Task

Alonzo's task was to speak about her feelings and create steps to learning the Internet.  She had to type and add her pages onto the web.

Conclusion

Alonzo's concluded that although it was frustrating and difficult, her advice to future generations is to check out other people's ideas and begin to implement them for practice, or to get the hang of it.

Insight

Thank you Alonzo.  She gave great advice, "DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!"

Jill Umetsu

Developmental patterns for learning the Internet- Report 2.

http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/jumetsu/report2.html

Feelings

Umetsu expressed the anxiety of taking the first step at publishing a paper on the web and trying to accomplish an almost "undoable" task.

Thoughts

Like other generations, Umetsu seemed to gain confidence as the weeks progress and as she compares her own experiences with those of her predecessors.

Task

Umetsu's task was to learn how to use the Internet and use its benefits to research past generation feelings, thoughts and experiences and post them by typing and creating a web page.

Conclusion

Umetsu felt that some aspects of the tasks were more difficult than others.  Although she was familiar with email and Internet, she states that the process of building a web page was very complicated.

Insight

I like that Umetsu was real about her illiteracy about the Internet, and instead of being prideful or overconfident, she was gracious about her learning and took careful steps and learning them thoroughly.

Abstract

The research presented in this paper uses memory work as a method to explore six women's collective constructions of two embodied practices, sweating and pain. The paper identifies limitations in the ways in which social constructionist research has theorized the relationship between discourse and materiality, and it proposes an approach to the study of embodiment which enjoins, rather than bridges, the discursive and the non-discursive. The paper presents an analysis of 25 memories of sweating and pain which suggests that Cartesian dualism is central to the women's accounts of their experiences. However, such dualism does not operate as a stable organizing principle. Rather, it offers two strategies for the performance of a split between mind and body. The paper traces the ways in which dualism can be both functional and restrictive, and explores the tensions between these two forms. The paper concludes by identifiying opportunities and limitations associated with memory work as a method for studying embodiment.

Summary

This paper is about how women researchers collectively gathered empirical data by extracting information from their own lives to produce and illustrate how the study of embodiment "enjoins" or "interweaves" the discursive and non-discursive memories of sweating and pain.  Their view as the women present, is in opposition to other dualistic idealist.

Opinion

I thought the concept of the paper was interesting.  I believe that in order to make an "effective" report or stand, both discursive and non-discursive are necessary to incorporate in a thorough study.  Like many journals that I have read, this journal is very lengthy and definitely abstract.  The journal was pretty interesting.  I appreciated the women implementing their own ideas.

Abstract

The year 1988 marked the tricentennial of the birth of the Swedish scientist, theologian, and revelator Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg and His Influence consists of 25 papers originally presented at a symposium held by the Academy of the New Church which is founded on Swedenborg's teachings. The subject matter of these papers is as varied in content as were Swedenborg's activities in life. He had a long career as a scientist and inventor who made important contributions m the mining and metallurgical industries, devised a method for navigation based on the position of the moon, made contributions to the theory that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny in biology, founded and edited the first scientific journal in Sweden, and was undoubtedly among leading scientists in eighteenth century Europe.

Summary

This paper journal is about a man named Emanuel Swedenborg and his 25 papers on his works, experiences, teachings and influences in religion.  In this "book" Swedenborg discusses much of his experiences and influences in theology and incorporating his teachings by accommodating his "findings" into religion.  Swedenborg mentions much of his influences derive from Jacobism and Freemasonry.  Apparently, Swedenborg attributes the relationship with God by looking through theological, psychological and philosophical glasses, or lenses.

Opinion

I thought that this article was interesting, but I am total disagreement with this paper.  In fact, I find it offensive to the Kingdom of God.  First, I believe that God covets an eternal relationship with everyone.  It is His desire to love and be the Father that He is to all.  Yes, God is theology, yes, He is also philosophical; but it is with His words and through His son's life that we are to seek and find the answers.  There are no other individual, nor "entity" that will pour out these blessings.  These blessings, "epiphanies," or revelations come from only one all mighty, yours truly, Lord Jesus.

Section C

Kai Hansjuergens

Problems and victories dealing with the Internet. Showcasing 12 students from former generations

http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/hansjurg/reports/Report2a.html

Feelings

Hansjuergens expressed the frustration of having to rely on nobody but yourself and the stress of trying to learn and complete the tasks simultaneously.

Thoughts

Hansjuergens adds that he/she experienced thoughts of tyring to find a computer to complete the tasks in time.

Task

Hansjuergens' task was to interview past generations about their feelings, thoughts and such of their own experiences of completing Dr. Leon James tasks and appointments.  Then Hansjuergens had to place findings and materials, in addition, to his/her own experiences and post on own web page.

Conclusion

Hansjuergens had to overcome the "victim" mentality of not being able to accomplish the tasks.  Later, she became very confident and proficient in using the Internet and posting web pages.

Insight

I appreciate Hansjuergens' web page.  It was beautifully done.  I relate in part to some of the frustrations and anxieties.  However, the more that I do this section of the "Report", I begin to feel more confident.

Jacquelyn Lim

Report One: Beginning of Self-Witnessing Emailing, WebCT, and Generational Curriculum.

http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2003/lim/report1.html

Feelings

Lim expressed that she was confused in the beginning and how she felt like the tasks were not as easy as they seemed.

Thoughts

Lim illustrated in her report that when she realized that she was making a "simple" task harder than it was, she started to refocus and told herself that she had to "slow down and read the instructions very carefully."

Task

She had to complete an assignment using WebCT, and a search engine such as Google.

Conclusion

Lim felt that although it was confusing, frustrating and "irritating," she was able to see her efforts unfold on her web page.  Seeing her web page published made her feel like she accomplished a lot and that it was worth it to complete the assigned tasks according to following directions.

Insight

As I read prior assigned generation reports, one thing that I have implemented as I continue to write these conclusions or insights rather, is, I really do take each generations' advice and suggestions to heart.

Christine Marchadie

http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/march/409/report2.html

Feelings

Marchadie expressed feelings of frustration, stress, anger, anxiety and many more while she was learning the process of learning how to navigate the Internet.

Thoughts

Marchadie had thoughts of dealing with frustrations about loading things on the homepage.  She had also experienced thoughts of depression and how it affected her ability to see the tasks that she needed to complete.

Task

Basically, Marchadie's task was to acquire information from past generations about how they felt, thought and dealt with the emotional side of completing similar tasks.  She also was instructed to post them on the homepage.

Conclusion

Marchadie concluded that her experiences of "surfing" the Internet had allowed her to be more proficient in not only navigating the web, but to also get a sense of unity and friendship as she worked diligently with peers in similar situations.

Insight

I agree with Marchadie when she stated that although she felt that the class assignments and tasks were frustrating and confusing, she had fun getting to know other fellow generations and she got over the frustration as she started to see her hard work pay-off at the end.

Ginger Andrews

The Process of Generational Cyber-Community in Cyberspace

 http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/gandrews/report1.html

Feelings

Andrews discussed her how frustrating and irritating it was to continuously try and fail and trying to compete her tasks.

Thoughts

Andrews expressed that she was more comfortable when she knew that there were others like her that felt and thought the same things.  She also stated that she was happy that she had a friend in class; it made her life easier and cut a lot of time doing these tasks.

Task

Andrews' task was to learn how to use the Internet and use its benefits to research past generation feelings, thoughts and experiences and post them by typing and creating a web page. Specifically, she discussed the differences of how the Internet and/or technology and communication have evolved.

Conclusion

Andrews was pretty content with her experiences.  Although the tasks were difficult and frustrating in the beginning, she was happy that she was able to learn a plethora of Internet and generational information.

Insight

Frankly, her insights and ideas were eccentric.  I did not know where she was coming from and what she was trying to say.  What was the point of what she was trying to say? I do not know.  I will say this, she is original.

Jacquelyn Lim

Keeping Your Cool.

http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2003/lim/report2.htm

Feelings

Lim explained how she felt like she had to organize her time with this particular task.  She also learned that being unorganized really is a disadvantage, especially when you procrastinate.

Thoughts

Lim stated that she thought that this particular task was so easy that she felt that she was able to put it off until the last minute.

Task

Basically, Lim's task was to check her weekly postings, place them in WebCT and she had to comment on past generations similar work and report her behavior as she performed this task.

Conclusion

Although Lim felt like the task was confusing, frustrating and "irritating," she was able to see her efforts unfold after completing her WebCT task.

Insight

You would think one would learn from the first experience...I think it would have been beneficial for Lim to re-read her Report 1 before starting her second.  She advised future generations in her last report not to procrastinate.  "Hello?"

Carol N. Ohta

My Adapting to Internet.

http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/409af96/cohta/459/report2.html

Feelings

According to Ohta, she felt overwhelmed and illiterate.  She stated that she felt like an "idiot."

Thoughts

Ohta stated that in the beginning of "traffic" psychology class, she was overly confident about what she knew about the subject.  When Dr. James unloaded all this information on her, she began to panic because she was not able to readily understand everything or something about the Internet, nonetheless navigating through it.

Task

Basically, Ohta's task was to complete the tasks that Dr. James had assigned week by week.  She was instructed to set up her address, password and such for access on the web.

Conclusion

Ohta was depressed at times and had gotten very angry at herself, but she was able to fulfill her tasks and come away from her experience with more awareness not only about the Internet, but mainly about herself.

Insight

Ohta illustrated her concerns and empathy.  She also says not to listen to outsiders about how you are dealing with the roller coaster of emotions. I love learning more about stuff like this, so for me, it is not too hard for me to stay all day figuring out stuff on the 'net.

Section  G

Hae Lin Han

My Weekly Research.

http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409af2003/han/report2.htm

Feelings

Han's attitude about this task was very different from her Report 1 paper.  Although she seemed to have some difficulties completing the weekly tasks given, she appeared to be handling it with a more positive attitude.

Thoughts

Han stated that in the beginning of the semester it was difficult to keep up with the assignments.  However, she utilized her past experiences with Report 1.  She adjusted her thoughts and feelings and dealt with her frustrations better.

Task

Basically, Han task was to acquire information, plug it on her web page and to upkeep her folder, or web page weekly.  It was necessary that she made adjustments and refreshed her web page when necessary.
