I.  LEGISLATION- is used to govern and protect people from themselves.

A)

·        Seatbelt legislation has been introduced with in the last 20 years.  Usage of seatbelts has increased nearly 90% than before legislation and created reductions in fatalities.

·        Child restraint legislation is much less proven to be effective.  There has been many state evaluations that prove the usage of child restraints doubling since legislation, however there are many problems with child restraints.  Most children are not properly fit or the seats are not properly installed which cause more causalities than they help.

·        Motorcycle helmet legislation was proven to reduce fatal injuries from 28% to 73%.  However, many states repealed the law because so many people complained about loss of freedom and mobility.

B)

·        I chose this concept because legislation is an important part of changing the behavior of drivers.

·        Legislation creates laws to that influence what people do and how they act.

C)

·        Some other examples of legislation would be DWI laws and speed limit changes.

II.  REINFORCEMENT-are ways of encouraging desirable behaviors instead of discouraging the bad behaviors.

            A)

·        Reinforcements include incentives or rewards that help encourage good behavior instead of discouraging bad behavior.

·        Many studies have shown that groups that received positive rewards for behaviors, such as wearing a seatbelt and then had follow up studies done on them, were proven to still wear their seat belts, even when not receiving a reward for it.

B)

·        I chose this concept because I like the idea of reinforcing the good instead of discouraging the bad.

·        I agree that it is a very effective way of getting people to behave the way they want.

·        I also chose this concept because I was surprised to read that people continue to perform the desired behavior, even when still not getting the reward.

C)

·        An example of reinforcement of good behavior would be granting a free license renewal to people who have a perfect driving record.

·        Getting a discount on insurance for taking Drivers Ed.

III.  EDUCATION-the passing on of skills and knowledge with the hopes of persuading people to drive safer on the road.

            A)

·        Road safety education begins with younger children by teaching them about the use of helmets, bicycles and seatbelts.  It continues through teaching teenagers about use of alcohol and drivers Ed.  Unfortunatly, drivers Ed is not offered as a required course in school or required to get their license.

·        Parents are also highly encouraged to be educators for their children for road safety.

·        There are also many anti-DWI education programs that address the problem of drinking and driving.

·

B)

·        I think the concept of education is very important because it is really the only help to changing people’s behaviors and keeping the road safe.

·        I also think driver Education should definitely become a required course in order to receive your license.

C)

·        An example of an education strategy is simulation games used to teach young children and teens about real life traffic situations.
