1. Pertaining to the Legal System
A. Drivers Under the Influence
i.
1,680 alcohol-related crashes in
ii. 1 out of 6 Canadians are killed by an impaired driver.
iii. I.e. A 22 year old and his DUI sentencing…2 months in custody and a 2-year federal driving prohibition. (P.163)
iv. Maximum sentence for impaired driving causing death is 14 years’ incarceration
B. Court Monitoring
i. Observation of court proceedings in the courtroom for offenses that involve victims and those that affect others, or by reviewing court records outside of the courtroom.
ii. Belief that these court room monitors influence judgments.
iii. Findings show that there is a harsher punishment.
iv. My opinion (lazy judges??)
v. American prosecutors are elected
2. Pertaining to Monetary Value
A. Costs of Life
i. Costs of traffic trauma EXCEEDS AIDS, cancer and heart disease.
ii. Is there a monetary value to a complete and full human life??
B. Costs of Traffic Safety
i. In 1994, the cumulative economic costs of these crashes totaled $150 billion, with a slight decline in the upcoming years
ii. With the addition of comprehensive costs the new grand total comes to roughly $336 billion.
iii. Laws INSTEAD of education.
iv. Behavioral factors contribute to 85% of collisions. The challenge???
