Outline of My Ninth Oral Presentation
The Subtle Consequences of Running Red Lights
This
is a presentation of “Driving Lessons”:
Written By Sany Zein.

1. Rear-end Collisions
A. Implementation of red-light cameras contribute to an increase in rear-end collisions
B. There were four key characteristics that was utilized to determine whether there was any relationship between red-light cameras and collisions
a. Camera/control
b. Degree of accident causality/non-causality
c. Accident type
d. Period before/after use of red-light cameras
C. Findings
a. At intersections with red-light cameras there was a reduction of right-angle crashes and right-turn-against crashes.
b. However, they increased rear-end crashes by 25%-60% depending upon location.
c. Right angle and right-turn-opposed accidents decreased by 48% at camera sites but decreased by only 25% at controlled sites of observation.
d. Lastly, rear-end collisions increased by 61% at camera sites, and decreased by 23% at controlled sites (No cameras at controlled sites)
D. Cross-cultural proof
a. I.e.
2. Red Light Running
A. In
a 2000 study in
a. Credit went both to the installation of the technology and a public awareness campaign that emphasized the dangers of red light violations.
B. The
study involving
C. Red-running crashes were twice as likely to occur on urban or rural roads. (Urban=86% v. Rural=42%)
D. Interestingly enough, the study showed that red-light-running crashes more likely to occur during the day (57%) rather than at night (48%).
3. Red Light Violator Characteristics
A. Based on a database by Retting et. Al…
a. Red light runners were more likely to be younger than age 30 and male.
b. They were more likely to be fatally injured at intersection crashes
c. They were more likely to have been driving with a suspended, revoked or otherwise invalid driver’s license
d. Furthermore, they were likely to have prior DWI convictions and two or more driving violation convictions
B. My Opinion
a. This is nothing more than a regurgitated report on what already happened. It is unfortunate that these people are lumped together because of past experiences. It is not only these out-cast individuals that run red lights, there are few average Joes that do the same but don’t get a spotlight on them because of their invisible prior record.
