Concept One:  Driving Health

a.        The ability to cope with many driving situations whether it be under normal circumstances or under stressful circumstances with high self-confidence.

b.       My OpinionÉ

á          I chose this concept because it seems like pretty basic but a very important concept to understand.

á          What I found most important is that people need to be able to adapt to different situations while driving and do so without causing harm to oneself or other drivers.

á          My initial reaction was that most people should already understand this, however, not everyone has good driving health.

á          I agree with this concept.

c.        Example

á          An example of a person with good driving health would be if on the way to a very important meeting, there were many setbacks that needed to be overcome but the driver remains calm and doesnÕt lose his cool.  He can adapt without becoming overly stressed.

Concept Two:  Social Sub-System

a.        Humans are social and we learn to play different social roles within society.  These roles directly affect the behavior we have on the road.

b.       My OpinionÉ

á          I chose this concept because it applies to everyone.

á          What was most important to me was that families, peers, coworkers, and organizations influence us as drivers before, during and after we drive.

á          My initial reaction to this was that it was very important and something everyone should know about.

á          I agree that we are influenced by many people that we come in contact with

c.        Example

á          This has cultural significance because no matter who you are, you come in contact with people if you go out into the world.  And if you go out into the world, you may be driving and that can have an impact on society, or you may be a pedestrian that can also have an impact on society.

Concept Three:  The Cultural Sub-System

                  a.  Drivers can come from very different backgrounds and experiences.  These different backgrounds can affect how a persons driving behavior is and therefore affects other drivers as well.

b.       My OpinionÉ

á          I chose this concept because people need to understand that people from different areas or backgrounds may have different behaviors in driving.

á          What was most interesting was that we donÕt notice the driving behavior of others unless it is different from the routine we are used to.

á          My initial reaction was agreement.  I think that if people all around are driving exactly like us, we wouldnÕt really notice anything, but as soon as something is different from what we are used to, we notice it immediately.

c.        Example

á          It seems like you can always tell when someone is driving and they are from out of town.  They come from different cultural backgrounds and have different behaviors so you notice these things.  A lot of times, youÕll see a driving behavior and say to someone else in your car, ÒThey must be from out of townÓ and sure enough when youÕre able to see their license plate it is from another state.
