I. Participatory action research
A. facts
1. it is a social enterprise (working with others)
2. it is educative (“the knowledge and skills acquired become essential to problem solving”)
a. gain a better understanding of the situation and issues
b. more confident in their understanding
c. skills learned can be helpful for our future
d. develop a broader thinking and leadership skills
B. PAR applied to traffic safety
1. what are you researching? What is being invested must be clear from the start
2. why are you doing the research? Reasons…
3. what difference will your research make?
4. should you do the research?
5. how can you make your research scientific and comprehensive
6. what are the equity issues related to your research?
7. how can your research improve the situation?
II. Geographic Information systems, Case-based reasoning and system design
A. complexity of traffic accidents and traffic safety
1. factors that influence driver behavior
a. driver’s age and gender: typically the majority should be focused towards the young male population
b. number of vehicle occupants: number of passengers are important to note because even I tend to speed less with passengers.
c. trip purpose? It is just to get from point A to point B?
d. vehicle type: huge factor here (for me as well) because I drive differently if I am driving the Lexus or the Buick
e. driving speeding history: true for me as well because I didn’t learn to cut down until after I had a speeding ticket.
B. Case-Based reasoning
· includes data collection information about speeds, accidents, behavior, attitudes (more interactive)
· speed management program
· developing of appropriate complementary legislation or regulation reflecting community values
· “new problems are based on previous experience
· “it is important to note how CBR differs from other data base and information-retrieval systems in its adaptation, information-retrieval and learning process.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Case-based_reasoning
in this link it defines what case-based reasoning is all about. It also lists the 4 steps (Rs) which include retrieve, reuse, revise, retain. Very helpful overall because it shows comparison to other methods as well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Participatory_Action_Research
in this link it defines participatory action research. After reading this I found out that it is originated in social psychology and the models were developed by Kurt Lewin in the early-mid 1900s. Some of the main aspects is change, intervention, and development.
http://www.progressive.com/rc/DrivingSafety/TeenDriving.aspx
talks about the risk when having teenage passengers in the
car. Its always important to keep in
mind that when you are driving, you are putting yourself as well as your passengers
at risk. So what is the main point?
Supportive driving!
