I. The Individuals
Three Fold Self
A. What is it and how does it operate
i. Sensorimotor-sensations, perceptions and motor acts
ii. Cognitive-thinking and reasoning
iii. Affective-feelings and motivations
B. The actions we take stem from thought, those thoughts are brought on by our feelings; therefore sensorimotor< cognitive< affective. It is easier to understand the “how?” rather than the “why?” Why did we act? Because we thought. Why did we think? Because we felt. How did we feel? Why did we feel? What was the motivation for such feeling? What we think and feel is going to affect how we act. Feelings and motivations are always present.
C. I felt that this is important to understand, because it is the basis for the rest of the course. For example, the different models of marriage-dominance, equity, unity.
II. Stereotypes in
the Media
Sugar and spice and
everything nice, that’s what little girl, are made of.
Snips and snails and puppy dog tails, that’s what little boys are made of.
A. Female
i. Common Categories
a. Domestic-only ones able to manage household & children within a realm of perfection, which is a standard held with even higher regard if that entails managing a career as well.
b. Sex Object-women are expected to be passive and subservient to men, even in their own sexuality which includes their own desires and pleasure.
c. Beauty-this is beautiful, to be beautiful you need this, always something you can improve on.
1. Beauty is taught to be a sort of manipulative tool. Which can be seen in the way magazines will place certain articles next to each other, for example- an article reading “Get the Body You Really Want” next to the article reading “How to Get Your Husband to Really Listen.”
B. Male
i. Common Categories
a. Joker-don’t be serious or emotional
b. Jock-no demonstrating softness only power and strength, goal is to win approval of other men and adoration of women
c. Strong Silent Type-Is in charge, in control, and is decisive, contains emotions and does not display feelings.
d. Action Hero-virility and power stems from aggression, anger and violence, which in most cases is seen as leadership.
C. Where do these stereotypes come from? What is the truth?
A lot of such labels are just over exaggerations of the truth. It is not that men do not have feelings, but more or less are not aware of or do not always understand them. Women may be more in touch with their emotions than men because they spend a lot more time trying to figure out and understand them. A lot of the examples from above are hindrances in ones strive for the unity model. All of such examples can be seen as the epitome of the dominance model.
D. Theistic Psychology
11.3.2
Unity Through Reciprocity and Differentiation
First Principle--Differentiation: No part of a woman is like any part of a man and vice versa.
Second Principle--Reciprocity: The perfection of unity increases with the diversity of its composing elements.
a. Is it suppose to be like this?
E. I chose this topic because I feel that it is important acknowledge these stereotypes in for us to better understand them, in hopes to better our ways of thinking.
