I. Who can control fate?
a. can you control what your fate may be>
1. External locus of control-When consequences of behavior are interpreted as controlled by luck, fate, or other powerful occurrences.
2. Internal locus of control-When consequences are the cause of a persons own behavior and personality characteristics.
b. Julian Rotter
1. Studied the behavior of people in certain situations, for example, gambling, hospitalization, political activism, persuasion, smoking, achievement motivation, and conformity using the E-I scale to evaluate their External and Internal locus of control.
2. Found that people who are highly internal may shift towards more external focus during times of extreme stress and uncertainty. And those who are more external will become more internal when their profession may place them in positions of greater authority and responsibility.
c. I think it’s a little bit of both, although, some do draw from one side more than the other.
1. Polychromatic people vs. Monochromatic people.
2. The differences in collectivist and individualistic cultures. And my mom and dad.
II. Gender Identity
a. Male and female are terms used by society and psychologist to guide our perceptions as to what our personal gender identity is. A fundamental and powerful component compromising personality, self-concept, and how others perceive you.
1. Are you man or woman is an easier question to answer than how masculine or feminine are you?
b. Sandra Bem
1. Studied Androgynous people using the Lickert scale to challenge to the notion that gender identity was represented by society’s standards for one’s biological sex or sex roles. She proposed that someone who was both would be happier and a more adaptable person as a whole.
2. Her findings were pivotal to psychological history as she found that Western cultures have evolved to become more accepting of the idea that people have both traits and that it’s ok or normal. Although people are still expectant of sex-role behavior and standards are still very powerful and used often.
c. Not to my surprise that androgynous people would be more accepted in a place like America. It is reflective of our diversity and growth as a culture. Although, gender isn’t perceived so black and white sex-roles and expectations do play an important role in society.
1. Female hostesses and male servers within the restaurant industry.
III. Personality and Theistic Psychology
a. Personality and the soul.
1. Personality I think is relative to the soul. And like the soul is an immortal characteristic of our existence that lives on after our second death.
b. Life in the physical world
1. The role of the physical world or life on earth seems to allow us to prepare to enter the spiritual world. Before regeneration and resuscitation life in the physical world allows an individual to reaffirm or better their character, in order to determine their future in the heavens or the hells of the spiritual world.
