First Article
British Journal of Social Psychology; March
2004, Vol. 43Issue 1, p99, 14p,1.
The Title:
Women's collective constructions of embodied
practices through memory work: Cartesian dualism in memories of sweating and
pain.
Abstract:
The research presented in this paper uses
memory work as a method to explore six women's collective constructions of two
embodied practices, sweating and pain. The paper identifies limitations in the
ways in which social constructionist research has theorized the relationship
between discourse and materiality, and it proposes an approach to the study of
embodiment which enjoins, rather than bridges, the discursive and the
non-discursive. The paper presents an analysis of 25 memories of sweating and
pain which suggests that Cartesian dualism is central to the women's accounts
of their experiences. However, such dualism does not operate as a stable
organizing principle. Rather, it offers two strategies for the performance of a
split between mind and body. The paper traces the ways in
which dualism can be both functional and restrictive, and explores the tensions
between these two forms. The paper concludes by identifiying
opportunities and limitations associated with memory work as a method for
studying embodiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

about the background of Swedenborg. Then the authors

Section C:
The steps or
the procedure that I go through in the Section B.
On the first article:
For myself, I was using the computer in “The
CLIC Lab” at Hamilton Lab, which is located on second floor of the New Wing.
Because I was using the Lab Computer, I only
need to type in my student login name in the UH Email system and my password.
To do that,
we pick 1st article to be example. After we typed the name of the
journal
“British Journal of Social Psychology” into
blank white box. Also, we need to set up the restriction to search.

on that entry, and reach the destination. Congratulation!!
The list of error that I made:
Because searching the article is
very simple task, I didn’t have any big problem within the process. However, I
had minor mistake on typing the words. Numerous times that I typed wrong
letters.

Task 4: Acquiring FTP software, creating and
uploading a Home Page and writing Sections E and F of Report 1
1) Use any
computer that able to connect internet.
For myself, I was using the computer in “The
CLIC Lab” at Hamilton Lab, which is located on second floor of the New Wing.
Turn
on the computer.
Because I was using the Lab Computer, I only
need to type in my student login name in the UH Email system and my password.
2) After that,
click on I.E (internet Explorer) icon, or go to “Start” at left bottom corner
in your monitor. If you using Window XP, the shortcut should be on the list
once you get there. Otherwise, if you are using Windows Me, 98 or 95, you need
to go to “Programs” after click on “Start” to find the I.E. shortcut in the pop
up programs list.
3)
Type the address of FTP uploading

FTP Uploading Instructions

Dr. Leon James, Instructor
4) Uploading means sending the copy
of a file from your computer or disk to the "server" computer that
publishes it to the whole World Wide Web. Your file
is sent through an application called FTP ("File Transfer Protocol")
which you must obtain and install on your computer--or else, use any of
the lab computers on campus. Instructions for how to get your FTP software
appear below.
5) Because I’m using the second
method, I downloaded the FTP freeware to my computer.
6) Install the FTP commander into
computer.
7) After finished the installation,
I started the program.

8) Then click the “new server”
icon.

9) A new connection window pop up

10) Fill in the dialog box:

11)
you should see the
server name that you just created in the right hand side of the window. In this
case, the name is kwokchan.
12) Click on that server “kwokchan”, and you should
see other students’ folder in there. Don’t mess around with other folders that
not belong to you. Then create your own folder by clicking “MakeDir”
icon on top.

13) After you click the “MakeDir” icon, a new
window will pop up. Enter your last name
for the folder’s name (all lower case letters, no spaces). Click “Ok” after you entered the name.

14) After you click “Ok”, you will see your new folder on the right hand
window. This means you have successfully created a folder of your own on the
Web. For me, I have created a folder
called “chan”.

15) Double click on your folder. The
first time you open your folder, there should be nothing
inside until you have uploaded some files into that folder.

Lists of errors:
1. I need to go through all the instructions even though I am so frustrated
about those steps.
2. I tried Method 1 suggested in the instructions, but it doesn’t work well
for me. I obtained the login name a few weeks
ago, but when I tried to login today, it says that the username does not exist.
3. After I tried a few times with both my uh email account and the login
name I obtained, the server says that my account has been pending. I am not able to login anymore.
4. Then I switched to Method 2.
However, I was having a hard time logging in again.
5. The instructions on the website are not updated. The user ID is 459s2005 instead of
459f2004. It took me a while to figure
out the correct user ID.
Task 5: Completing Report 1 and publishing it to the Web
and
writing Sections G and H of Report 1
This
report 1 is about monitoring my own self-behavior. There are five separated tasks in this
report. Task 1 is about registering on
the web as a lab user. Task 2 is
locating 2 specific journal articles in electronic resources on the Web. Task 3 is shopping for a specified type of
mailbox on the Web. Task 4 is acquiring
FTP sofeware, and then creating and uploading a
Homepage. Finally, task 5 is completing
Report 1 and publishing it to the Web.
Why we tend to skip a lot
of details while we are performing a task?
From the evolutionary perspectives, human beings always skip some of the
details while doings task or reading because we want to save time and energy. For example, if our ancestors concentrated on
every details while working, probably they are not
able to learn that much new techniques in a limited time period. Imagine, after they wake up every morning,
they are just learning the same old things if they don’t cut out the
details. Another example is when our ancestors
are in a danger of being chased by the predators,
there is no time for them to search or think about the details. The first thing that come
to their minds is just to flee or fight.
After a long period of time, this life-saving thinking habit is being
stored in our unconscious minds.
This report 1 gives us
the opportunity to learn how to pay attention to details while we are doing the
tasks. Being patient and having the
endurance to look at details are essential in achieving our goals. However, I am lacking the attitude of being
patience in many circumstances. I believe
that this is what I have to learn in order to be successful in performing
various tasks.
Lists of sub-steps and
errors:
2) I uploaded
the file to the web folder.
3) Then I saved that as web page html format,
and the name of the folder is “home.html”.
4) After
that, I uploaded the home.html to the web folder.
