INTRODUCTION

My name is Tsuyoshi, and I am currently taking PSY459, which is Theistic Psychology instructed by Dr. Leon James.   This course is a generational curriculum and students from each generation develop their own understanding about Theistic Psychology based on their previous generations.  This is the first report of this course and there are two purposes: Improving our rational thought and improving our information literacy.

Not only theistic psychology but also other fields of science require highly trained rational thinking skills.  Without rationality, we obtain negative bias, and sometime it ruins the accuracy of our judgment.  As a first report of theistic psychology course, we conduct a series of computer tasks and observe how it applies to the self-witnessing methodology.  We also try to analyze what is wrong with our own behavior thinking about our threefold self.  Through this attempt, we are able to become observing our behavior rationally and to improve our own information literacy.

Before going any further, we have to know some concepts adopting in this report; they are the self-witnessing methodology and the threefold self.  First, the self-witnessing methodology is a fundamental strategy of the three-step drives self-improvement program developed by Dr. James and Dr. Narl.  By observing our own attitude and behavior rationally, we find problems within us, which we are not aware of yet.  After analyzing the result rationally, we are able to improve our own attitude and behavior.  Sometimes, this methodology involves tape recording or video filming.

As the name indicates, the threefold self consists of gthree self.h  They are affective-self, cognitive-self, and sensorimotor-self.  The affective-self involves our feelings and motivation.  The cognitive-self is responsible for our thinking and reasoning.  Finally the sensormotor-self affects our sensation, perceptions, and motor acts.  For example, if someone is knocking at the door at night, you might feel uneasy.  (Affective-self)  Then you would think who it is and why the person is visiting me at night.  Also you would think what to do.  (Cognitive-self)  Finally you could open the door or call a security guard.  (Sensorimotor-self)  As this example indicates, all of our behavior is a series of interaction of the threefold self.

List 2: The Mistakes I Made During The Procedure Above

1.      I mistyped the file name

Detail:

When typing the file name, I misspelled so I needed to delete it and retype it.  I made this error because my handheld computer has a smaller keyboard than the ordinary desktop computers.  Sometimes I often miss stroke keys unless I watch the keyboard and my fingers carefully.  This situation makes me stressed.  (Affective-self)  Also I think I should buy a regular lap top computer, my conclusion is always gNoh as a lap top computer is very expensive and hard to bring it with me.  (Cognitive-self)  Therefore, I keep using my handheld computer.  (Sensorimotor-self)

My Analyze (To Improve My Rational Behavior):

I think my Cognitive-self and Sensorimotor-self made right decisions.  In order to avoid further negative emotion by my Affective-self, I should get used to the smaller keyboard of my handheld computer.  Once I get use to the keyboard, I should make fewer mistakes with the keyboard, and my mobile computing life would be happier.

2.      I miss tapped (clicked) some buttons

Detail:

When trying to tap the [OK] button, I tapped out of the sub windows, as the button was very small.  I got a beep noticing, gOops! You did wrong!h  When I tried to tap the [X] button, I tapped the next icon [?] that is for help, and a help window popped up.  I got so irritated because of these errors.  (Affective-self)  After making these errors, I analyzed why I did so other than my handheld computer had a small LCD display.  My conclusion was the errors were due to the location I was at.  I was sitting by a window, it was too blight to use a LCD monitor.  Too much light decreased visibility of the monitor, I hardly recognized the exact location of the small icons on the monitor.  (Cognitive-self)  After coming to this conclusion, I moved to another place where it was not too blight.  (Sensorimotor-self)

My Analyze (To Improve My Rational Behavior):

Since it was possible to predict that the LCD monitor would be hardly seen because of the Sun, I should have taken a seat at a different location before using my handheld computer.  If I have done this, I would have been able to avoid making the errors and getting negative feelings because of it.  As for my Cognitive-self and Sensorimotor-self, they did well.

3.      I misspelled some words when writing an e-mail to the CSS Help Office

Detail:

Since I did not pay attention spelling while typing, I made some spell mistakes.  Whenever a spell checker gave me a suggestion, I got surprised as gOh, my god!  I still cannot spell a word like this!h  (Affective-self)  Then I checked my spelling to see what was wrong with it.  (Cognitive-self)  Finally, I choose the correct word in the suggestion.  (Sensorimotor-self)

My Analyze (To Improve My Rational Behavior):

Since I am not a native speaker of English and I can use a spell checker, I do not have to worry about misspelling.  Even if I type a word incorrectly, I only have to use spell checker.  Therefore, a series of actions done by my threehold-self was appropriate.

Journal 1

Title: Women's collective constructions of embodied practices through memory work: Cartesian dualism in memories of sweating and pain.

Authors:  Gillies, Val; Harden, Angela; Johnson, Katherine; Reavey, Paula; Strange, Vicki; Willig, Carla

Source: British Journal of Social Psychology; Mar2004, Vol. 43 Issue 1, p99, 14p, 1 diagram

http://search.epnet.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=aph&an=12787719

Abstract:

The research presented in this paper uses memory work as a method to explore six women's collective constructions of two embodied practices, sweating and pain. The paper identifies limitations in the ways in which social constructionist research has theorized the relationship between discourse and materiality, and it proposes an approach to the study of embodiment which enjoins, rather than bridges, the discursive and the non-discursive. The paper presents an analysis of 25 memories of sweating and pain which suggests that Cartesian dualism is central to the women's accounts of their experiences. However, such dualism does not operate as a stable organizing principle. Rather, it offers two strategies for the performance of a split between mind and body. The paper traces the ways in which dualism can be both functional and restrictive, and explores the tensions between these two forms. The paper concludes by identifiying opportunities and limitations associated with memory work as a method for studying embodiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What this article is about:

This article is about dualism, which is the relationship between our body and mind.  The author supports that the dualism can be both functional and restrictive.  In order to study this concept, the author points out the limitation of a method based on the subjectsf memory.

He had a long career as a scientist and inventor who made important contributions m the mining and metallurgical industries, devised a method for navigation based on the position of the moon, made contributions to the theory that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny in biology, founded and edited the first scientific journal in Sweden, and was undoubtedly among leading scientists in eighteenth century Europe.

What this book is about:

The Swedish scientist Emanuel Swedenborg and his teaching had a huge influence on later scientists.  This book introduces 25 papers which were presented at a symposium held by the Academy of the New Church which is founded on Swedenborg's teachings.

SECTION C

List 1: The Steps I Did to Accomplish the Task Above

1.      I went to Sinclair Library to ask the librarian for some help.

2.      I explained to the staff what I needed.

3.      Then I went to Hamilton library as the Sinclair library stuff recommended me to go there.

4.      I showed the staff the list of articles I wanted.

5.      After she found the articles, I asked her to e-mail them to me.

6.      After getting home, I turned on my computer.

7.      Then I started a mail-software I usually use.

8.      I opened my e-mail account.

9.      I opened the e-mails the librarian had sent.

10.  I opened Microsoft Word

11.  I clicked [File] menu and chose [Recent Files] to open my assignment file.

12.  After opening the file, I copied paragraphs which I needed in the e-mail and pasted the information to my Word document.

13.  I pressed the [CTL] key and the [S] key to save the document.

14.  I read the articles in the e-mails.

15.  I typed what I was required to write.

16.  I saved the word document every five minutes

17.  After completing the task, I closed the Word document and e-mail software.

18.  Turned off the computer.

List 2: The Error I Made During The Process Above

1.      I went to Sinclair library at the wrong time.

Detail:

When I got there, it was nearly 5 o'clock, so the librarian was not there.  I asked one of their staff at the service counter on the first floor, I was told to go to Hamilton library.  I was so disappointed to hear this since the Hamilton library was quite distance from Sinclair library and it is getting dark outside.  (Affective-self)  I regretted not visit Sinclair library while the librarian was available.  I knew I had no other choice than to go to Hamilton library.  (Cognitive-self)  While on the way to Hamilton library, I was still upset with myself.  (Sensorimotor-self and Affective-self)  I knew this was all my fault.  (Cognitive-self)

My Analyze (To Improve My Rational Behavior):

As I did not conduct this type of assignment before, it was easy to predict I would face trouble completing this task.  Therefore, my first negative Affective-self reaction could have been avoided if I started this assignment earlier.

2.      I could not forward the e-mails received from the library stuff to another e-mail account.

Detail:

I forwarded the information to my hotmail account, I received e-mails which were unexpected.  There was no abstract in the e-mail I received with hotmail; only titles and authors were listed.  This surprised me.  (Affective-self)  Remembering what I did, I was sure I did everything properly when forwarding the e-mails.  (Cognitive-self)  As I knew what I needed was in my Hawaii.edu mailbox (Cognitive-self), I did not panick (Affective-self) and opened my Hawaii.edu account.  (Sensorimotor-self)

My Analyze (To Improve My Rational Behavior):

Sometime we face things which we can not understand or predict.  In order to prevent unnecessary negative feelings and its consequences, we always should prepare gback-upsh just in case.

List 2: A list of Errors I Made

1.      I mistyped keywords searching for products

Detail:

Since Yahoo! is my portal site, I visit their shopping section first.  Although I tried to search products using keywords gmailboxh and gcooperh, I got only a few lists of mailboxes which were not what I was looking for.  As I was expecting a tremendous number of suggestions, I was surprised.  (Affective-self)  Since Yahoo! Shopping did not have many choices for this kind of product; I decided to use Google instead.  (Cognitive-self)  When I tried Google, I got a lot of suggestions about the products I was looking for.  (Sensorimotor-self)  It made me so pleased, and I thought Google was better than Yahoo!.  (Affective-self and Cognitive-self)

After finishing the assignment above, I found that I typed gcooperh instead of gcopperh, and it embarrassed me.  (Affective-self)  If I remained calm, I would have found I had mistyped keywords immediately.  (Cognitive-self)  Then I would retype the correct keywords.  (Sensorimotor-self)  Actually, there were many suggestions by Yahoo! Shopping when I typed the keywords correctly.

My Analyze (To Improve My Rational Behavior):

This time, a negative reaction of my Affective-self caused the negative consequence.  I was able to find I could mistype the keyword if I was calm.  In this case, a quick response was not the best choice.  Sometimes, we should think about the situation where we are currently at.

List 2: Errors I Made Through The Process Above

1.      I got confused when I logged into the server the first time

Detail:

Before setting up FFFTP, I had some experience using this software.  I did not have trouble or difficulty to download it and install it.  Actually, everything seemed to go very well.  After I logged into the server, I did not see any files or folders which supposed to be there.  I got nervous (Affective-self) as I had no idea what was wrong with what I had done. (Cognitive-self)  Since it was still on Tuesday night, which is three days before the dead line, I decided to wait for other students' progress.  (Cognitive-self)

After taking a break for a while (Sensorimotor-self), I tried logging into the server again (Sensorimotor-self) as I wanted to know what I had done was really correct.  (Coginitive-self)  This time, everything was OK even though I did not change anything!  I felt so relieved and was happy with the result. (Affective-self)

My Analyze (To Improve My Rational Behavior):

Since my second trial was successful, a series of actions I made based on my cognitive-self and Sensorimotor-self was correct.  Sometimes, gdoing nothingh works very well.  Although this strategy might not be the best answer, we should know this to remain rational.

2.      I mistyped my home page address when trying to check and see my home page the first time

Detail:

When typing my home page address into the address bar on the browser, I skipped one letter.  As a result, I got an error message.  First I had no idea what happened and then got nervous. (Affective-self)  I was wondering if I typed wrong.  (Cognitive-self)  I checked the URL I had typed to see if it was correct or not.  (Sensorimotor-self)  And then I got upset as I realized I had made a stupid mistake. (Cognitive-self and Affective-self)  Finally I typed the URL correctly (Sensorimotor-self) and succeeded to see my pretty home page.  It made me feel so good.  (Affective-self)

My Analyze (To Improve My Rational Behavior):

Most of the time, computer troubles are caused by our cognitive error.  Knowing this, we should have a less negative Affective-self.  If I realized this, I would not have the negative reaction of my Affective-self.  However, both my Cognitive-self and Sensorimotor worked very well as I was able to resolve the problem and did not get further negative Affective-self reaction.

WEEK 5 TASK (Due 02/25/05)

Completing Report 1 and Publishing It to the Web

SECTION G

Summary of This Report (What Is This Report 1 Is About and What Do I Want to Learn By doing It)

As mentioned in the introduction part of this report, there are two things to improve.  They are my retinal thinking skills and information literacy.   The series of tasks I was required to do challenged me very much; sometimes I had difficulty to complete them.  While conducting the tasks, I broke my behavior down into small pieces and analyzed them referring the threefold-self.  Through this process, I was able to understand why I felt so or did so.  I also realized what I should have done instead of what I actually did.  I am convinced that I have learned how to behave or react rationally, and I would like to apply this skill to my daily life.

SECTION H

List 1: The Sub-steps I Had to Go Through

1.      Turn on the computer

2.      Open my first report file

3.      Complete Section G

4.      Save the file

5.      Save the file as HTML format using gSave Ash in gFileh menu

6.      Close the document

16.  Close the web page

17.  Open my first report file (Word format) on my computer

18.  Make the changes

19.  Repeat Step 4 to 16

List 2: The Errors I Made

1.      I had no idea I should upload my report in Word document format or HTML format

Detail:

When uploading my first report, I was confused as I did not understand what kind of format file I should use.  (Affective-self)   I guessed HTML format should be preferable, then I decided to read the instructions again as I was not sure.  (Cognitive-self)  Although I read the instructions again and again, I did not find the answer.  (Sensorimotor-self)  This situation made me more nervous.  (Affective-self)  After rethinking, I came to the conclusion to see other studentsf folders.  (Cognitive-self)

When I checked some studentfs folders, I found they were also confused about the type of file format.  (Sensorimotor-self)  So I decided to prepare two file formats which are Word document format and HTML format (Cognitive-self,) and I uploaded both of them.

My Analyze (To Improve My Rational Behavior):

This time, I took three different strategies to resolve this problem, and I think all of them are reasonable.  Although my first negative reaction (Affective-self) was not avoidable, the following two threefold-self remained rational.  However, I have to admit that the most rational strategy is to ask the instructor.
