Marriage: Different Types

Definitions of Soulmates

After making this outline, I was curious as to what the definition for soul mate was, or at least what I would find online concerning soul mates. I suppose that by comparing the term to what a united couple is, they have many similarities and basically mean one thing, that when two people’s thoughts and feelings unite they become one. How poetic.

Marriage Models

So I googled “Marriage models” and came up with this website that explained different levels of marriages. It seemed funny to me that they referred to what looks like the dominance model as the “traditional” model. And in the first part there are four separate models rather than the three that are explained in this course, another opinion breaks up the marriage models into even more than the three or four, and gives them extremely technical names. Nevertheless, I found it amusing.

Types of Abuse

This site explains the different types of abuse that exist.  Once you are able to identify what each abuse involves then a victim is better prepared to recognize such behaviors.  Then a victim may begin to take steps to stop it from happening or repeating again.

Increasing intimacy in a relationship

This article discussed the different forms of intimacy. Mental intimacy is important, as we have learned from the unity model of marriage, but so is financial intimacy, spiritual intimacy, recreational intimacy, and emotional intimacy. These forms of intimacy reiterate what is important in the unity model of marriage. For example, having separate accounts is unacceptable in the unity model of marriage and this article agrees with that. I chose this article in relation to this section I have reviewed because it talks about what goes into mental intimacy and how it is important in a relationship. However, it concludes with something an equity or dominance model therapist would say: that despite the need for strong intimacy, you need separate time apart from each other because not one person can fulfill all your needs.

This website describes the different types of intimacy, as well as their importance in a marriage. According to Olson and Olson (2000), "Married people tend to be healthier, live longer, have more wealth and economic assets, and have more satisfying sexual relationships than single or cohabiting individuals. In addition, children generally do better emotionally and academically when they are raised in two-parent families" (p. 3). This website deviates from the Unity Model in the aspect that it asserts that there can be too much “togetherness” between couples.

Achieving Intimacy In Life

This web link leads to a site which talks about different types of intimacy. As Dr. James showed in the part about, mental, physical, and emotional intimacy all fit into different areas and categories. Dominance model marriages are based on physical intimacy, while Unity model marriages are focused on emotional or affective intimacy. This site does a good job of comparing the different types.
