Report 2: My Weekly Research

Introduction

Welcome to my report 2 for Dr. James’ Psychology 409 class.  My record of my thoughts and actions while I was researching the subtopics for my weekly postings on WebCT.  To complete this task, I need to research websites, post a message on an article I want to share with the class, and read my classmates’ messages.  I learned a lot about myself through gathering information as I self-monitored.  I made myself aware and learned of my affective information behaviors (emotions and feelings), cognitive information behaviors (my thoughts and strategies), and my many errors.  I used the Internet, specifically google to do my research.  The Internet is a very valuable and very accessible way to get additional information.  I made few errors along the way but I took notes concurrently so I would learn from the errors.

To complete my research and postings, Dr. James was kind enough to provide us with detailed instructions.  I go into detail about the steps I’ve done to complete each subtask but here is the link to the instructions:       LINK TO INSTRUCTIONS

WebCT Week 1

Date: Thursday, September 11, 2003

I am trying to post my first week’s message on WebCT, but to do this I need to search on the web for a topic that I want to share with the class.  To complete this, my first step was to look over the approved topics and subtopics.  I decided I would choose the first topic: how optimism affects problem solving.  To me it sounds like an interesting topic and I think I am a pretty optimistic person.  So, with my instructions on the 10 approved topics and their specifications, I began my research.  I went to my favorite search engine www.google.com.

Using this web site, I started my search.  Being a really horrible speller, I typed “Optamism.”  I was never really the best speller but to my surprise I guess there are others who are horrible spellers too,  the search word actually came up with about 75 hits.  Amazing huh?!  But at the top of the site, it stated “Did you mean: Optimism?”  So I went back and typed in “Optimism.”  This search word came up with over 2 million hits.  I think I was being a little too broad.  So, I referred to my instructions and chose a subtopic that I thought wouldn’t be too hard.  I wanted to research about the history of optimism.  To do this, as I learned in ICS 100 I needed to put the search phrase in quotation marks.  In addition to the quotation marks to narrow down my hits, I needed to use search phrases by using the + sign.  For example, when I was searching the history of optimism, I typed “optimism + history.”   To my dismay, it didn’t come up with any hits.  It said: Your search - "optimism + history" - did not match any documents.

I ended up giving up on searching on stupid optimism.  I decided to find a new topic to research, the history of speed limits.  I used the search phrase “Speed limits + history.”  Even though it only came back with 5 hits, I found a great article that I could use to report back to the class.  It was actually the first article that I clicked on!  I copied (ctrl + c) the website from the address bar and I pasted it onto Microsoft Word.  Then I printed out the article so I can read it and use it for later reference, like this report!

Affective Information Behaviors

When I was reading the instructions to complete this task I was happy because it seemed easy since I searched the internet before.  But when I was researching on the Internet, I was really frustrated because I couldn’t find any articles that I could use.  Either I was being too vague or nothing came up at all!  I was getting irritated because I thought it was going to be easy and simple but it was taking me so long!  I just wanted to finish so I changed topics.  I was sure happy when I finally found an article!! What a relief.

Cognitive information Behaviors

I remember thinking I wanted to give up and take a break for a little while if I couldn’t find anything in five more minutes.  I just didn’t know what search phrases to use.  I knew I had to be more descriptive in my search phrase but yet still needing to be brief.  I remember the useful tips I learned in ICS 100 where I needed to use the + sign and quotation marks.

Errors

There were three errors I made while completing my first research message.  The first was a spelling error, when I typed “optamism.”  It wasn’t a costly error because it didn’t take much effort to fix it.  In fact, the computer did it for me because the computer gave me a suggestion.  The second error was that I was being way too vague.  I couldn’t possibly find a good article if I had to search over 2 million web sites.  I noticed I do this quite frequently as you will later find out with my later weeks.  But, luckily, this error was also easy to fix so it wasn’t costly.  My last error was when I typed “Optimism + history.”  I guess there isn’t a history on optimism.  Maybe I should have typed ‘Optimism’s history.”  I don’t know because I gave up and search the history of speed limits.

A fourth error I made wasn’t when I was researching the topic.  I didn’t read the instructions very well, so instead of sharing one or two brief things I wrote a whole paragraph.  This research was not computer error but a “Lauren error.”  I couldn’t really fix it because I already posted the message and I cannot take the message down to edit after I posted it onto WebCT.

Research Posting #1

Posted by Lauren Fujii (laurenf) on Thursday, September 11, 2003 3:20pm

I did my research on topic #5 Speed limits and drivers.  The questions I answered were on subtopic b, which is the history of speed limits, how they came into existence, why do speed limits exist, and what society gets out of speed limits.  To do my research, I used the search engine google.  The address to a good website where I found the answers to my questions is
http://www.miketodd.net/encyc/speedlimits1.htm .
According to this website, American speed limits started back in 1909.  The state of Washington was the first to enforce a speed limit.  In the early days of speed limits, states could set their own upper limit.  Most states had the upper speed limit of 70 mph, with the exception of few states that had the 75 mph speed limit.  The speed limit came into existence because there was a fuel crisis and the American government was forced to do something to reduce the country’s massive fuel consumption.  So they enforced a maximum speed limit across the Unites States as 55 mph.  States had to impose the 55 mph speed limit if they wanted federal contribution to their road programs.  There was a very positive side-effect to the imposed 55 mph speed limit, it saved over 9,000 lives.  So as you can see, with speed limits being enforced, it benefits society because it saves lives.

WebCT Week 2

Date: Friday, September 19, 2003

This week, I need to do another research posting so I need to find an article to share with the class.  To do this, I went to google.com and typed in the search phrase “Information Literacy.”  This search phrase came up with 390,000 hits.  Luckily I only looked at two web sites before I found one that I could use for subtopic a: “What is information literacy?  What forms does it take?”  The first website I went to was the TILT (Texas Information Literacy Tutorial) homepage.  I knew this wasn’t a website I could use because it is used to prepare people to explore and research in online world of information literacy.  The article I did like and I wanted to share with my classmates was on the National forum on Information Literacy.  From their homepage, I was able to click to a definitions page where it explained the definition of information literacy.  I copied and pasted the website address onto Microsoft word and then printed it out for further reference.

Affective Information Behaviors

I remembered how frustrated I was last week and I wanted to just finish this assignment.  I really didn’t feel like getting frustrated all over again so my new goal was to find any website.  I was happy because the first search phrase I typed I got a hit.  When I saw that there was 390,000 hits, it kind of disappointed me but I found a great article on the second try!!!

Cognitive Information Behaviors

As I was thinking which research topic to search I thought, “Which topic would be really easy?  What words will get my the right amount of hits I need?”  When I saw information literacy on the instructions, I thought that it was a easy and simply, yet straight-forward word.  I just wanted to know what information literacy was, I wasn’t looking for any detailed subtopic that would be harder to research.

Errors

Since I learned to be more clear, but brief, I was able to make NO errors!  Yippee!  I felt really good about this because it will motivate me in the future, especially since this was only the second week of posting.

Research Posting #2

Posted by Lauren Fujii (laurenf) on Friday, September 19, 2003 1:33pm

I did my research on Information literacy issues, subtopic A. (What is information literacy?  What forms does it take? And How widespread is it?)  The search engine I used google. com and I typed in information literacy.  I had no problems with this website:
http://www.infolit.org/
This website states that information literacy is the ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively use that information for the issue or problem.  There is a link that you can click to that gives definitions related to information literacy.  (business literacy, computer literacy, health literacy, etc.)

WebCT Week 3

Date: Friday, September 26, 2003

To complete this weeks posting, I used google.com, again.  I always use that website because I like it the best.  I wanted to research “How people cope with noise in their lives.”  I chose subtopic a (What forms does this problem take?) because it seemed pretty easy.  I first typed in the search word “noise.”  Again, I was being too vague.  The word came up with over 13 million hits.  I read further into the subtopics and saw the word “noise pollution,” so I decided to use that as my search phrase.  Still, there was a lot of hits, about 165,000 so I scrolled down reading the descriptions of the website.  I found the one I liked because it said, The noise FAQ 9frequently asked questions) & What is noise pollution.”  When I clicked on the website, I got a really detailed article explaining what noise pollution is and many other questions.  An example question is how loud does noise have to be before it’s dangerous?  I copied and pasted the website address onto Microsoft word and printed it out for further use.

Affective Information Behaviors

I was having a tough week because my boyfriend and I broke up the night before so I had other things on my mind when I was completing this assignment.  I just wanted to finish it because I knew I had to.  My best friend was taking me out to lunch and have a few drinks and I knew I couldn’t do it after I drank.  I wasn’t really feeling anything else because my mind was preoccupied.

Cognitive Information Behaviors

After I came up with over 13 million hit with the search word “noise,” I knew I needed to get my mind off my problems and think.  I started reading other subtopics thinking I might change the topic itself.  But finally, I came upon the word “noise pollution.”  It seemed like a really good search phrase so I decided to try it.  See, when I really think about things clearly, they come!

Errors

The one error I made was being too vague.  I knew I was being too vague when I typed in the search word “noise,” but I wasn’t really thinking.  It wasn’t a costly mistake because it was easy to repair but I just forgot that typing in a search word like that will hit on every website that has a word with noise in it.

Research Posting #3

Posted by Lauren Fujii (laurenf) on Friday, September 26, 2003 12:32pm

I did my research on topic #7 How people cope with noise in their lives.  The questions I answered were on subtopic a, what are “errors” mistakes people make. And what forms do they take and where.  To do my research, I used the search engine google and I typed in the key
words “noise pollution.”  The website I found was pretty good because it was frequently asked questions about noise.   http://www.quiet.org/faq.htm
According to the website, there are many different definitions of noise pollution.  It states that the definition of noise is highly subjective.  For example, I like to watch tv with the volume really high, but my mom finds that really irritating.  Noise can also be measured.  “The decibel is a measure of sound intensity; that is, the magnitude of the fluctuations in air pressure caused by sound waves.”  The website also covers, how loud noise have to be before its dangerous, is there evidence that noise can make us sick, and doesn’t the law protect me against noise.

WebCT Week 4

Date: Friday, October 3. 2003

I wanted to try another search engine this time, so I used my other favorite, www.altavista.com.  I chose to research how self-confidence affects performance, subtopic d.  (what should be done about it and should self-confidence be taught in schools?) The search phrase I typed in was “self-confidence + performance.”  From the start I liked google.com better because it seemed faster.  With google.com I had instant hits but with altavista.com it took the internet a while to come back with its results.  But the search phrase I chose was a hit!!  As I looked at the descriptions of the web pages the fourth one I saw was “improve concentration technique and self motivation for peak performance.”  I clicked on it and found a website I wanted to share with the class.  The article had four helpful hints on how to improve self-confidence that I think can be taught in school.  I copied and pasted the article’s address and printed the article out for my future reference.

Affective Information Behaviors

I was feeling pretty good because when I looked at the instructions I saw the two key words “self-confidence” and “performance.”  I guess I am getting better at picking out good key words that are clear but brief.  This really made me happy because I found an article on one try.  It makes me more motivated because I feel I am getting better at it!

Cognitive Information Behaviors

When I first was looking for a new topic to research I was thinking that I wanted a topic that would e easy to find a good article.  I thought “optimism” and “problem solving,” but no, I remembered I already tried that one.  That is when I went to topic three and the key words sort of popped out at me!

Errors

I am proud to say that I did not make any errors on this research posting!!!

Research Posting #4

Posted by Lauren Fujii (laurenf) on Friday, October 3, 2003 12:23pm

I chose to research how self-confidence affects performance, subtopic d.  (what should be done about it and should self-confidence be taught in schools?)  I used the search engine altavista and I used the search key phrases: self-confidence + performance.  This is a good website that discusses different qualities of performance:
http://www.performance-media.com/concen.asp
I like this website because it provides few clues and hints to better performance which will build your self-confidence.  Concentration is the key.  Some hints are to avoid concentration loss, develop the essential mental skill of concentration, external distractions hinder concentration, and learn to reach and maintain mental focus.  I think self-confidence should be taught early in schools because if a child is confident about themselves, then they will be able to perform better.  They wont need to worry about what others are thinking and just concentrate on their performance.

WebCT Week 5

Date: Friday, October 10, 2003

To complete this week’s postings, I chose to research how people cope with noise in their lives and what forms it takes.  To do this, I went back to google (I learned altavista is too slow.)  I typed in the phrase “noise pollution.”  This came up with a good website called Noise Pollution Clearinghouse.  It was the first article that came up in the search.  The article stated the definition of noise and the different ways we experience noise.  I really liked this article so I copied and pasted in onto Microsoft Word to use in the future.

Affective Information Behaviors

I was feeling really proud and really god because the first search word I typed in came up with great hits.  I think what really made me happy was the fact that the first article displayed was an article I was ale to use in my research postings.  I was surprised I found it so fast.

Cognitive Information Behaviors

When I was thinking what I was going to research, I just thought I would research noise pollution.  I wasn’t really thinking and I didn’t realize that I did the exact same topic two weeks earlier.  I guess you can just say I didn’t remember because I wasn’t thinking!

Errors

The one error I “think” I made was that I researched a topic I already posted on WebCT.  The instructions don’t say that I cannot research a same subtopic twice but I am not too sure if you can.  I thought you couldn’t but the instructions only state that to get your full points you need to participate in at least 5 of the 10 topics.  This is a human error but I don’t quite know if it is Lauren’s error or not.  I do not know if I am over looking the small details of the instructions.

Research Posting #5

Posted by Lauren Fujii (laurenf) on Friday, October 10, 2003 12:19pm

I chose to research How people cope with noise in their lives; subtopic a, what form does this problem take?  I used the search engine google and I typed the search phrases noise pollution.  The website I found was:  http://www.nonoise.org/aboutno.htm
This website really caught my attention because it gave many different definitions of noise.  Noise is any unwanted sound.  For example, road traffic, jet planes, jet skis, construction equipment, leaf blowers, etc.  I didn’t really think that noise could affect a person’s high-blood pressure but according to this article it does.  I guess because when people become really stressed with little sleep.  The article also explains that we experience noise in a number of ways.

WebCT Week 6

Date: Friday, October 17, 2003

I chose to do this week’s research on speed limits and drivers.  I chose to research subtopic c: What do experts say about it?  To complete this week’s research I went to google.com and used the search phrase “speed limits.”  I knew this was a pretty broad category but since I had time and I wasn’t in a rush like the other weeks, I tried it.  The search came up with 262,000 hits.  It was way too broad.  The first four articles I looked at were on anything that had the word speed limit written anywhere in the article.  They were about the effects of raising and lowering the speed limits, states attitudes towards speed limits, speed limits by states, and something about Texas speed laws.

I was being too broad and I was going to find a new search phrase but then I saw it.  The description of the website said, “Speed Doesn’t Kill: The Repeal of the 55-MPH Speed Limit.”  This article caught my attention and I wanted to share it with others.  So, I copied and pasted the website address onto Microsoft Word and I printed out the article for future reference.

Affective Information Behaviors

This time I didn’t have the need to hurry up and finish the assignment.  I wasn’t just wanting to get it over with and finish it.  So I took my time and thought I’d see what I would get if I used just “speed limits.”  I was pretty amazed when I saw the title of the article and I was happy that I found it.

Cognitive Information Behaviors

I was thinking that I had six hours at work to do nothing since my boss had nothing for me to do so I planned to take my time and really look through the websites.  I wasn’t really strategically planning anything, as you can tell because I typed the most vague search word.

Errors

To others doing this assignment, they could think my error was being too vague.  Personally, I don’t think I was and I am glad I was because I wouldn’t have found a website that says speed doesn’t kill.  Other than that, I don’t personally think I made any errors.

Research Posting #6

I chose to do research on speed limits and drivers, subtopic c.  (What do experts say about it.)  I used the search phrase “speed limits” on the search engine google.  I found an interesting article that caught my attention on this website: http://www.cato.org/pubs/pas/pa-346es.html
The title of the article caught my attention because it read “Speed Doesn’t Kill: The Repeal if the 55-MPH Speed Limit.”  I was automatically drawn to this website especially since there have been a lot of local deaths related to speed this past weekend.  I was wondering how someone can write that speed doesn’t kill.  The website stated that in 1995 the Republican Congress abolished the 55 mile per hour federal speed limit law.  Amazingly, research has shown that almost all measures of highway safety
how improvement, not more deaths since 1995.

WebCT Week 7

Date: Friday, October 31, 2003

To be honest, week 7 research posting should have been completed by October 24.  Since I was one research posting behind I needed to do two on week 8.  To do this research message, I chose how self-confidence affects performance.  I chose the subtopic: “how do you relate yourself to this topic? Is this a prominent issue in your mind?”  I didn’t need to do any research on the internet because it is an opinion question that I wanted to share with the class.  I wanted to share something about one of the boys I tutor.

Affective Information Behaviors

I get really emotionally involved with my students because I go to their house three times a week, which allows me to get to know them on a personal level.  I feel really bad about the way the boy’s parent treat him because he has such low self-esteem.  I know I have a lot of feelings when I write or talk about him and I was just worried I would ramble on and on.  I didn’t want to share too much about his personal life yet I wanted to give an example how self-confidence really does affect performance.

Cognitive Information Behaviors

I knew when I was tutoring him that I could use the example for one of my posting so I made sure I remembered what happened.  I needed to think about how I wanted to write it without going too much into detail and boring everyone.

Errors

Since I wasn’t researching on the web, I didn’t have any researching errors.  I did make a error that I was bale to fix fast when I wrote his name in the WebCT posting.  I wasn’t really thinking and I later realized I should keep it confidential.  It is a good thing I did not post it before I realized my mistake!  Another error I made was to procrastinate.  I totally forgot that I needed to post a message because all I was worrying about was to finish my Report 1.  It might be a costly error because it will reflect my grade but it was easy to fix because I just posted it the next week.

Research Posting #7

Posted by Lauren Fujii (laurenf) on Friday, October 31, 2003 3:23pm

I chose to talk about how self comfidence affects performance, subtopic e.  I can really relate the little boy I tutor to how self confidence affects his performance. He is 6 years old and is in the 1st grade special ed.  He is a very hard boy to handle because he has ADD and has a comprehension difficulty.  I was having a hard time helping him with his phonics for couple weeks and one week he was really good.  I praised him saying he was really smart and I knew he could do it.  You should have seen the smile on his face when I was constantly praising him for the correct answers.  He wanted to show off and so he was really concentrating and he had no problems with my flashcards.

WebCT Week 8

Date: Friday, October 31, 2003

I chose to research multitasking while driving, what could or should be done about it.  I start off the research by going to google.com.  I typed in the search phrase “multi-tasking + driving,” and it came back with about 34,00 articles.  I couldn’t find any relevant articles because the ones I looked through were on cell phone safety, and they even had one from USA weekend magazine.  A “days of Our Lives” star was being interviewed.  The description on the web site said: star Lisa Rinna is multi-tasking-driving, talking to me on cell phone.  That is when I knew I needed to try a different search phrase.

At the top of the website it said did you mean “multitasking + driving.”  So I tried that and the first article was a hit.  I found it very useful.  I wanted to share the web site because there were many recommended steps that help distracted driving.  I copied and pasted the address onto Microsoft Word and printed out the article for future reference.

Affective Information Behaviors

I was getting a bit frustrated because I couldn’t find a web site that had an article that I wanted to share.  After reading though a lot of irrelevant articles I just wanted to get it over with.  I just wanted to find the article!!

Cognitive information Behaviors

I remember seeing that google asked my if I meant “multitasking + driving,” instead of “multi-tasking + driving.”  But to be honest, I didn’t really think it mattered.  I didn’t think that the little hyphen made a difference.  I knew I could always try google’s suggestion if I didn’t find any articles on my first try.

Errors

The only error I made was my spelling error.  I still don’t know the exactly correct way to spell multitasking but that’s okay.  I found my article.  It wasn’t a costly mistake because it was really easy to repair.  I just needed to add the hyphen.

Research Posting #8

I chose to research about multi-tasking while driving, subtopic e.  (What should be done about multitasking while driving, what could be done about it)  I used the search engine google.com and used the search phrase “multi-tasking + driving.”  This is the website that came up that I found was useful: http://www.nsc.org/nsm/drive2003.cfm
I wanted to share this website because there were many recommended steps that help distracted driving.  Here are some: It only takes a second for an accident to happen. Stay committed to paying attention behind the wheel.  Avoid slowing down to "gawk" at a crash or other roadside activity.  Don't reach behind you, pick things up off the floor, open the glove compartment, clean the inside windows, or perform personal grooming while driving.  Don't drive if you're tired. Don't daydream. Share driving duties with another driver when on a long trip.  Don't talk on your cell phone while driving. Wait until you get to your destination, or pull over to the side of the road before beginning a cell phone conversation.  If you must use your cell phone, use it safely: Avoid long social calls and distracting or confrontational conversations.  Position your phone within easy reach.  Don't answer or use your phone when driving in hazardous conditions.  Always stay aware of what is going on around you.

Report 2 Analysis:

Before I started typing report 2, I filled out a pre-ratings form, that Dr. James handed out in class.  I decided to put it into a table for easier reference.

** Ratings are measured on a scale; 1 being negative/not much and 10 being positive/a lot.

I am adding in this post-ratings table after I completed my report but I wanted to compare it to my pre-ratings.  To my surprise, there were only three questions that I had a difference on.  I think this is because I knew this task was going to be difficult, and it was.  I also think I got this result because I need to succeed and I will try until I do.  So, if I don’t, I would be really upset and I KNOW I will succeed.  The first difference came from the first question, which was my mood.  When I was filling out my pre-ratings sheet, I was really stressed out, so I gave myself a 2.  I was facing a lot of things that was due and I was uncertain if I was going to able to complete it all.  But, while I was completing my post-ratings form, I was so ecstatic that I was finished so I gave myself a 8.  I didn’t give myself a 10 because I was tired because it was 3:00 am.  The next thing I had a difference on was the last question, the amount of effort.  I knew this task was going to be hard but I didn’t think it was going to be this difficult!!!  I decided it was above the scale, so I rated the post-ratings at a 11.  The final difference I had between my pre-ratings and my post-rating was the time I thought it was going to take me.  Boy did I underestimate.  I thought four hours would be enough, but I wasn’t even close!  It took me eight straight hours!!!  And I still needed to fix it up for regrading.  UGH!

Conclusion

While competing Report 2, I realized I should have started earlier.  It took me way longer than I expected.  While completing my weekly WebCT research postings that I needed to accomplish Report 2, I learned a lot about myself.  I learned that I was remembering the mistakes I made and used them to complete later tasks.  I learned that I am getting better at thinking what my search phrase or word when doing the research.  This motivates me because we still have a little less than half way more to go.  It also made me pay closer attention to every little detail when completing everything because I knew I was going to have to report back on it.

These weekly assignments prove to be really useful because the internet is a rally good resource for anything and everything! I was able to explore and exploit the internet as a valuable and accessible resource for information that can further my knowledge.
