Section A of Report 1:

** Discuss your interpretation of the Pre-ratings for task 1

My interpretation for task 1 for report 1 is that this class will deal a lot with following directions to the “T” and will be a major factor in receiving the maximum amount of points for each task that is due weekly.  Some of the work may be tedious and time consuming so staying on top of the weekly assigned tasks will be crucial.  This part of task one was very tedious and repetitive.  This task kind of foreshadows that we will do a post ratings or some sort of self-assessment after we are done with the task or class.  This pre and post techniques of self-evaluation seems valuable when a person wants to evaluate their personal progress of achievement.  This task was easy because what you needed to do was register as a web user on the web.  Registering did not take more that 45 seconds so it was quick and easy.  However, we will not know if we are registered correctly because the server said that it would take 3-4 days to confirm.

Section B of Report 1:

** Discuss your interpretation of the Post-ratings for task 1

The post-ratings were quite similar to the pre-ratings of task 1.  Answering the question was tedious and repetitive.  My feelings and attitudes of the post-ratings compared to the pre-ratings was that my answers were generally the same except for the predicted stress levels and frustration levels.  In my post-ratings, the number I selected was higher than it was in the pre-ratings.  For this task, the pre and post ratings did not seem too valuable for my self but it was something that needed to get done and I was highly motivated to complete the task.  I had no problem registering as a web user because all it entailed was inputting your personal information in and a password and it did not take long at all.

Section C of Report 1

** Discuss your interpretation of the Pre-ratings for task 2

I think that I should not have much difficulty finding these two journal articles because I have worked extensively with EBSCO Host and Academic Search Premier doing annotated bibliographies.  I have had training using this type of research and technology.  There are other search databases along with the Academic Search so that will probably be useful.  The questions on the pre-ratings are the same as the ones before so I was kind of prepared when answering the questions for the task.  All in all, hopefully this part of the task will not be too stressful or frustrating.  I think that the only difficult part of this task would be to find the correct journals.

Section D of Report 1 (task 2)

** Summarize in your own words what each article is about

Abstract:     Reviews the book `Swedenborg and His Influence,' edited by Erland J. Brock et al.

The year 1988 marked the tricentennial of the birth of the Swedish scientist, theologian, and revelator Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg and His Influence consists of 25 papers originally presented at a symposium held by the Academy of the New Church which is founded on Swedenborg's teachings. The subject matter of these papers is as varied in content as were Swedenborg's activities in life. He had a long career as a scientist and inventor who made important contributions m the mining and metallurgical industries, devised a method for navigation based on the position of the moon, made contributions to the theory that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny in biology, founded and edited the first scientific journal in Sweden, and was undoubtedly among leading scientists in eighteenth century Europe.

I think that this article that we were assigned to find is about a book review where the author of the review points out and notices the accomplishments of the Swedish Scientist.  The author of the review acknowledges that the Swedish Scientist did have an impact to the scientific field during his time in Europe.  I think that it is just like any other book review where someone wants to say something about a book that they read.  After reading the abstract myself, I thought that I have the wrong journal article!  The review or article itself has nothing to do with Driving Psychology.  I still think that I have the wrong one but the numbers match up and other people in class have said that the article skewed far from the class topic.  However I read the abstract and realized that this scientist has made remarkable contributions to society and has influenced many other people in that field.  I may have the wrong journal but the numbers match up and I followed the directions as closely as I could so I am going to be confident with my work that I have done.

Abstract:     The research presented in this paper uses memory work as a method to explore six women's collective constructions of two embodied practices, sweating and pain. The paper identifies limitations in the ways in which social constructionist research has theorized the relationship between discourse and materiality, and it proposes an approach to the study of embodiment which enjoins, rather than bridges, the discursive and the non-discursive. The paper presents an analysis of 25 memories of sweating and pain which suggests that Cartesian dualism is central to the women's accounts of their experiences. However, such dualism does not operate as a stable organizing principle. Rather, it offers two strategies for the performance of a split between mind and body. The paper traces the ways in which dualism can be both functional and restrictive, and explores the tensions between these two forms. The paper concludes by identifying opportunities and limitations associated with memory work as a method for studying embodiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article that I found is about women’s memories and recollections of their experiences of sweating and pain and of two embodied practices.  The researcher then studies the dualism of the two which is two components acting against or together at the same time.   The author of the journal article associates the limitations of the women’s recollection with memory as a method to study embodiment.  When I found this article I again was in shock to see that it did not have any significance with the class topic and thought that I had found the wrong article again.  However the journal article numbers match up with the ones that we were supposed to find and I followed the directions.

Section E of Report 1

** Discuss your interpretations of the Post-ratings for task 2

After completing the assignment for task 2, I realized that I had good experience dealing with EBSCO Host and researching journals on the web.  I found the journals quite easily and it did not take too long for me to find them.  I also knew that if you know where to look, you should not have a problem because the information you are looking for will be there.  This type of task was not new to me and I have done work very similar to this so I thought that I was well prepared.  I enjoyed using the computer for this task because if not, we would have to go to the library and search through files and files of journals in books or magazines.  The journals that I found were not relevant to the theme of the class so I am a bit worried about searching and retrieving the correct journals that we were supposed to.

Section F of Report 1

** Discuss your interpretations of the Pre-ratings for task 3

This task does not seem difficult at all.  I am used to searching on the web for various things and searching for a copper mailbox does not seem all too hard to do.  I think that this task should take me about five to ten minutes; it'll be a matter of searching for a custom mailbox manufacturer's website.  Everyone uses the World Wide Web daily for a wide range of tasks and uses so everyone gets a lot of practice using the net.  If a person does not have the net or is not familiar with it, they should definitely attempt to learn to use it and access it frequently because the age of technology that we are in today, the net is the most convenient way to communicate with others locally, nationally and globally.  I am going to enjoy working on this part of the task.

Section H of Report 1

** Discuss your interpretation of the Post-ratings for task 3

I found the mailbox for this task in a matter of minutes.  It was easy to complete this task because I knew what I was doing.  I knew where to look and what to look for so it made my job that much easier.  This task was an easy one because I was familiar with searching and finding things on the web using various types of search engines and databases.  I hope that the mailbox that I found meets the correct standard and according to me and my interpretations, I think that the mailbox meets the requirements of the task.  It is copper, has a design on the outside and it rests and stands on a post.  My assumptions from the Pre-ratings were correct because I said that it wouldn’t take long and I wouldn’t have a problem finding a mailbox for the assignment.

Section I of Report 1

** Discuss your interpretation of the Pre-ratings for task 4

I have never done a task like this before where I had to upload my data onto my own personal webpage before so I am anxious to see how it turns out.  I don’t think that I am going to have too much difficulty completing this task because the instructions of how to do it are already provided for us and we don’t have to search the internet for the instructions.  I think that this method of publication is very useful because it allows everyone who wants to see it, read through it and make comments and suggestions on how to better your work.  I am confident that I can accomplish the task and I don’t think that it will take a long time or require too much effort or give me too much frustration or stress.  I enjoy working with the computer and have some experience troubleshooting so if I run into any kind of trouble I should be able to complete the task regardless.

Section J of Report 1

** Discuss your interpretations of the Post-ratings for task 4

This part of the task was a bit confusing because I had a trouble uploading and using the FTP application.  I downloaded and installed the program correctly but I had a problem logging on and uploading files.  I think that I need to be shown how to upload files and log onto the FTP server from someone who knows.  So my assumptions were wrong about finishing this task quickly and without much frustration.  The first FTP server I installed to my computer was one that was difficult for me to learn and use so when I went to the computer lab to upload my work there, the people working there said to download another program that would be easier to use.  This program is much easier to use however, it is an evaluation program meaning that it will be only good for 30 days.  I finally got the right program and I am assuming that I will have no problem uploading and changing my work with this one.  This task was a difficult one because first I didn’t have the password to log onto the server, then it wouldn’t work at home on my computer and at the computer lab.  Hopefully I won’t have much difficulty uploading my work and using this new program for the upcoming tasks.

Section K of Report 1

** Discuss your interpretations of the Pre-ratings for task 5

I think that this task will not be too difficult because it is your own personal summation of report 1.  There is no right or wrong answer just your opinions and reactions to the report.  I think that it will however take some time to complete because there was a lot of work that we had to do in a matter of 6 weeks or so.  Hopefully after completing the work I will be able to upload it and view it and make changes if I wanted to.  I hope after doing this task I get comfortable working with the FTP server and I can use it without any problems.  Also I want to be able to be comfortable making changes to my work after I uploaded it.  I think that after this I will be able to because you have to first write section K, then upload it, then write section L then upload that version and then at the end you have to write section M.  So the changing and adding on to the latest version will give me the practice that I need to be comfortable working with the FTP server.

Section L of Report 1

** Summarize what Report 1 is about and what you hope to learn by doing it

I think that report 1 was a type of test to see if we were all capable of completing these tasks on our own and submitting them on time to the instructor.  It also showed the instructor that we are all capable of following strict directions.  Report 1 is a pre-cursor to the next report in a way that it shows us that this is what the class will be about.  It will be about completing work on your own away from class and then emailing the professor your work on time and in a way the is suited for him.  All of this work was done through the use of a computer and technology.  The report also proved to the teacher and us that we can work with computers and technology.  Throughout the report we have had to search for a copper mailbox, look for journals on the web using a different search engine and database, complete numerous and tedious pre and post ratings monitoring our reactions, and upload an application that allowed us to post our work on the web for all to see. What I came away with from the report was using a FTP server to upload our work to the web.  I have never used this application before or even heard of it before this class.  It is a great tool to get used to working with because you can post your work for everyone to see.  Without it I can’t think of any other way to do that in the time that we are in today.  Overall I enjoyed working with the computers and on this report even thought it was very tedious and repetitious completing the pre and post rating every week by Monday.

Section M of Report 1

** Discuss your interpretations of the Post-rating for task 5

The responses for my post-ratings were similar to those of my pre-ratings.  I stayed in the projected time frame and I didn’t have too much stress or frustration completing the task.  I uploaded my work and I was able to change and make revisions to it without much problem.  I am pleased with the way it turned out because I wasn’t too sure how it would but it looks like it did well.  This part of the task is the final post-rating and self-monitoring task for the report 1 and I feel relieved that we don’t have to do any more until…next week!
