How Social Life Affects Driving Behavior

I. Formal and Intimate Social Life

A.  Definition- The differences of form and content in our social lives within  formal, structured systems and intimate, personal systems.

B. Explanation- In our society, a distinction can be made for almost all forms of social life between Òformal and informal, personal and impersonal, or everyday and bureaucraticÓ

C. Examples

1.Formal Social Life: The mechanics of driving a car in a safe and supportive manner.

2.Intimate Social Life: Social interactions between family and friends

D. Relation to Psychology and Culture- Formal and intimate social life is in everything we do and plays a role in every social situation we find ourselves in such as school, work, dating, etc.

E. Education- Formal and intimate social life could be taught in an introductory sociology or psychology course in school.

II.  Mixed or Confounding Social Forms

A.  Definition- The situations in which social forms oppose each other and may cause problems.

B.  Explanation- In everything we do, we are surrounded by social interactions and sometimes two different forms (i.e. formal and intimate) may be interacting together in the same situation.

                  C. Examples- Driving a car with friends

D.  Relation to Psychology and Culture- Another tool to use in a cybernetic approach.

E. Education- These concepts could be taught in college courses and easily incorporated into a driver education course.

III. Survey of Community of Traffic

                  A. Definition- A survey done to measure attitudes of driving behavior.

B. Explanation- This survey provides clues as to when mixed social forms take place during driving

C. Relation to Psychology and Culture- This survey gives us insight into the psyche of a specific population of drivers and prevalent attitudes and driving behavior among them.

D. Education- It could be implemented in a driving education informational video.
