I.                    Speed Management and Traffic Safety

a.       It is argued that the destructive force of a crash increases in proportion to the square the speed.

b.      Reduction in speed of just 2 to 5 km/ph can result in the reduction of 30% of injury and fatal collision.

c.       Yet the relationship between traffic speed and the probability of accidents varies on a variety of contributing factors.

II.                 Various Factors that influence a drivers behavior with respect to speed.

a.       Other variables must be noted as contributing factor in regards to speeding accidents.

                                                               i.      The Physical Environment

1.      Construction

2.      Turns and bends in the road

3.      Speed bumps etc.

4.      Others on the road

5.      Time of the day (usually between 4-7 pm is when accidents occur)

6.      Each jurisdiction may vary

                                                             ii.      The Vehicle

1.      Condition of vehicle

2.      Type of vehicle

3.      Improper use or lack of safety devices

                                                            iii.      The Driver

1.      Age and gender of driver

2.      Attitude they may have in regards to speed limits

3.      Number of people traveling in the vehicle

4.      Trip purpose or time constraints (either just going to the store or running late)

5.      Ultimately the condition of the driver (intoxicated, prior accidents, speeding history)

iv.      All factors vary in cultural and psychological influences

III.                Princess Diana’s Car Crash (p.251)

a.       Car-  Mercedes S-280, may have had malfunctioning air bags and antilock brakes

b.      Driver- Henri Paul, allegedly drunk and lacked experience driving the poorly repaired vehicle, which allegedly had tendency to veer to the right.

c.       Other Vehicle- Slow moving Fiat Uno showed a speed variation between vehicles.  Constrained physical environment in tunnel.

d.      Paparazzi- Equivalent to racing behaviors but were later cleared.

e.       Speed- From the amount of destruction, he speed seemed to be excessive.

f.        Time of Day- Night

g.       Occupants of the Vehicle- 3of 4 were not wearing seat belts.
