Introduction

In this report you will find information on Web Page Design. Everything from the pschological aspects to the physical bare essentials. I also discuss some of the other generations reports on this topic. Before I started this class, the only thing I knew wabout web pages was what one looked like. I had no knowledge of how one came to be, and honestly never thought I would become the creator of my own. As you can see, I have learned a lot, and my views and thoughts about the whole topic have changed.

Earlier Generations: What they think...

Here is where I discuss a few specific past gererations reports. After that I will discuss my findings in general of all the reports on web page design.

Brandon Suetsugu wanted to learn how to make web pages so he signed up for the class. He advises the future generations to not give up. He also said "you'll notice the difference when you are not pressured to put out a good report".
Brandon talked mainly about other people's experiences when he should have shared more about himself. He mentioned that "they seem to be rephrasing what people already have said" or "so and so doesn't have a conclusion" or "this person could use a little more explanations". I think Brandon's being hypocritical here. He criticized their reports and didn't correct it with his own.

Cherisse Eguchi mentioned that she really didn't have the interest in computers. Her initial reaction was "FORGET IT!" It got frustrating for her at times, yet whenever she would learn something new, she'd feel the drive to figure out more. In addition to that, within three months, she have become very "into computers". Ever since she overcame her technophobia, It's now a daily necessity for her to use her personal computer. Cherisse concludes that there are some things that books don't tell you...it gets easier due to "practice and experience".
It shows that Cherisse is more than willing to face new challenges. I agree with what she said about the work we do: "I have come to appreciate my own work as well as the work of other students who have taken this online course". Her enthusiasm and positive attitude just pushes me to do more.

Carolyn Agmata

I thought Carolyn's report was interesting because it was her second time taking the class. I feel that the second time around all the anxiety and confusion would not be there, and doing you would be able to figure out new was to advance and produce the webpage so that it could surpass the first. But after reading her report, my thoughts changed. She says she is still learning every day. She focused on her first time taking the class, and really didn't go into much depth at all. I was a little disappointed becuase I thought it would be good to hear a second timers advice or new things they learned.

Depth

The depth of the generations depended a lot upon the amount of information they had to report on, the experience and where they were as far as all the generations were concerned.  The trend was as the generations progressed, so did the depth of the topics.  The generations also tended to give general observations earlier on and that trend still continued depending on the report visited.  It seemed that the student and their amount of disclosure may have depended upon whether or not they understood the topic or whether they explored more deeply than others.

Conclusions

In conclusion of this section, The generations have expanded on each other (as a whole) and have gotten better in every aspect of HTML and content. When the generations continue on, there will be the same situation as seen before where most students have never seen HTML or other parts of the web, but the technology will get progressively better with newer and faster modems, computers, and more capable browsers to choose from. When the earlier generations have trudged through on LYNX, we can further appreciate Netscape 4.5 and Microsoft's Frontpage as well as other software that make our journey more exciting and more efficient.

Advancing Topics

Inevitably as time goes on in cyberspace, new psychological and technological topics will emerge. Addictions, Cyber-Marriage, Cyber-Therapy, and many others have been born on the web in the last few years and have gained more and more attention and popularity. We must remember that "Virtual" can never take the place of "Reality" because most things in cyberspace tend to be intangible to senses other than sight and sound. Yes, we will tackle new psychological research dealing with these new problems and rightly so. We need to know how to deal with those topics effectively with knowledge and experience.

Web Designer Principles As I See It: You Can Judge a Book By it's Cover

For this part I visited
Jeff Glover's page on Web Page design. Check it out for tips for your own web page.

Purpose

This page was really funny as well as informative on what your page should or shouldn't look like.  There was a lot of information that can help with your web page design. The purpose of this page is to educate us--as the web designer, on not only how to create great looking pages, but to avoid the pitfall of bad looking and bad functioning pages. There are five links to go to when you get to his page:

1)About Him (sort of like a resume and a biography);

2) Top 10 Ways To Tell If You Have A Sucky Home Page (his way of teasing you to get you to buy his product);

3) Sucky to Savvy (list of what makes a home page sucky/savvy);

4) Disney Disaster (more pictures of him and his boyfriend Phil);

and finally his 5) Web Site Starter Kit (on sale for only $24.95).

This link talks about the really bad things to look for when you are making a page. Although there is lots of humor  in this link, there are points to look at when you are making a page. Are we guilty of making a few of these mistakes? We are bound to because our personal pages reflect who we are and when there are too much pictures of your pets (#8), or your header is so big it can kill the rest of your page (#10), or you have obnoxious background music (which I have never had). Think about what we can do to rid ourselves of the pain of viewing these sights!!

This was the most informative link of the four because it went more in-depth on what really isn't good for the web in terms of design and how to turn the junky stuff into net savvy web elements.

This link is Mr. Glover having fun on at Disney World. I liked the link because of the effects he used on his images. I am going to try and do that.

This page is all about him.

Information You Can Use

Jeff Glover's links to "Top Ten Ways To Tell If You Have A Sucky Homepage"

                            10. Your header picture is over 50K!
                                   9. You put up a 400K picture of yourself, and you
                                       appear in the lower-left 20K!
                                   8. We can only stomach so many pictures of your
                                       pets.
                                   7. Obnoxious background music.
                                   6. You use bad, bad, bad, bad scans.
                                   5. Ticker Tape Status Bars
                                   4. You use Construction pics on your page.
                                   3. Your home page consists of a desperate plea for a
                                       job.
                                   2. Blink
                                   1. You're on your own Hot List!

Scrolling Marquees can be irritating because they read at the same speed. I agree with Mr. Glover there. It's hard to read and sometimes annoying. I agree that construction signs suck because it is obvious to someone that you are still working on your home page if something is not complete. I agree that javascript alerts can be sucky because if you are trying to look at a home page numerous times it can get irritating after awhile. It also takes a long time load from past experience. I was looking at a friend's home page and found the java alert irritating.

What makes a page savvy

  1. Flexible Window Widths
  2. Use Thumbnail Graphics
  3. Use Height and Width Tags
  4. ALT Tag Your Important Images
  5. Include Contact Info
  6. Be Unique!
  7. Optional Plug-Ins

I like many of the suggestions that are given to make a page better. Thumbnail pictures can be considered savvy because they save space from the actual picture. Height and width tags tell the browser how to load an image. This is my understanding of what height and width tags are. I guess these can be considered savvy because then the home page will load faster. Uniqueness is always a good idea, people like things that are new to them. I tried to be unique, although I used many others ideas in hepling me with ideas.

Psychological Aspects to Web Design :

How Dr. Driving Percieves it

In this section, I discuss three topics that I liked from Dr. James' social psychology of home page architecture . His page was very informative, here's what I thought about...

Cyberspace Home

"I find that Home Pages are always under construction for those owners who are personally involved. Constructing Home Pages on the World Wide Web is an exciting activity! Just think: you have the world at your finger tips. Because you determine what the browser sees and has access to, you are acting like a virtual god -- building a cyberspace architecture through virtual pathways to people's minds."

The thought of webpages always being under construction is true to a point. During the course of a semester, pages are always being added to and edited. Moreso for pages on the web that are updated daily or weekly. However the pages in past generations are, for the most part, untouched. It is really unnecesary for them to work on them after they get their grade. I agree that creating pages is a really exciting activity and I am constantly changing my page. I try different looks or find more info for a report, I feel that I am always at the computer nowadays. I continue to feel that excitement every time I press the upload button, just knowing that anyone in the world can instantly see my work. It's amazing.

Informational Content of Home Pages

"We need to look at our Home Pages with an objective eye. In general, we try to achieve two important results with a Home Page.  One is that it should be clear (unconfusing), informative and useful. The other is that it should be beautiful, with a creative and entertaining style. These two aspects can be discussed as the informational and stylistic features of Home Pages."

Dr. James explains how important it is to have an organized home page. He says that we should try to achieve two important results with a Home Page. The first is that it should be clear and informative. The second is that it should be beautiful, with a creative and entertaining style. I have to agree. In order to maintain the interest of the users, these two results is a must. Some pages have either one or the other. Many home pages are one or the other. The trick is trying to combine both. This takes time to plan out. But if you want a page to be nice, you have to work at it. I have noticed that if there is a page that is ugly or unappealing to the eye, I would pass over it without checking out the content. Other turnoffs are when the text clashes or doesn't mesh well with the background. It is hard to read, so I usually wouldn't bother.

Home Pages are Loved

"So, is the highway to your virtual house always so busy? Are you sure you got the right address? Eventually I got in -- what a relief -- and proudly presented him my Home Page. I was ecstatic. I looked at my latest background color, a light lemon shade, soft yet distinctive."

I don't think that anyone can appreciate your webpage more than your self. I know that ever since my very first download, I have been telling everyone I know my address. I am so excited every time something new goes on there. Everyone says that it's cool, but I'm the one that know's how much time, effort, frustration, research, (you know what I mean) went into every detail, of course I appreciate it. I am proud of my work, I would have never thought I could have done it.

After going through the idea's in Dr. James social psych web page, I have found that many aspects that go into web page architecture in order to produce a successful web page. Overall, home pages should be appealing to the eye, it should make the reader want to stay and search around. I believe this can be attained when enough care goes into it's production. When you are really into doing something, most of the time you are going to do a good job. If you are proud of your works, you must have put alot of effort into it. For the most case, web pages are constantly changing. That's why if you have a web page that you care about, you should always be thinking of new and creative ways of improving it.

What It's Like to Become a Web Designer: How I Fought the Fear...

If someone asked me six months ago to design a web page, I would have told them they were crazy. That's why during the first day of Dr. James PSY 409a Advanced Topics in Psychology class, I thought about dropping it. He told us that at the end of the semester we would have our very own web page. Right away I doubted my abilities, I didn't think I could hack it.I thought that I didn't need the added pressure in an upper level psych. class. Not to mention the class was writing intensive. By the reactions of the others in class, I noticed I was not alone. I believe that was the very reason why I decided to stick around for the next class. Before that point, I thought I was pretty good on the computer. I had used the internet for some research and explored a little for fun, I couldn't quite say that I was an expert, but I did know how to get around. I was comforted by the fact that there were others in the class that had less kowledge in computers than I did. I figured he would take us step by step, and it wouldn't be as bad as I thought.

After the initial fear and anxiety, I became a little excited. I thought it would be a great accomplishment if I could produce my own web page. Computers and the internet are such a big part of our society today, I figured I needed to learn it sometime. I began to think of all the possibilities if I could learn how the whole design thing worked.

Back to the Anxiety...

Ok, I said I was excited about the learning web page design. That all ended during my first look at html. We learned a style of commands and HTML coding so that the information we produce can be read by the web. (Here's an example of how to change fonts). If you want to see the HTML format of this page, just right click and chooses 'view source'. It was all foreign to me. Now I have to learn a new language??? No way, all my fear and self doubt came back. I didn't think I would be able to do it. The only way I produced the first assignment was because we had an exact format for our homepage. After that, I knew I would be lost. The html book we had might as well been in a different language. I spent hours trying to figure it out on my own, only to end up where I started, frustrated and hopeless. This is when the thought of withdrawing came up again. Actually, one other student did withdraw. This was the one girl that gave me reason to stay. It figured. I definately thought I would never get it. I had to stick it out, it was for my major, I needed the credits. I was not happy with this class, it recquired alot of work and I couldn't even get past the format. I haden't even started my reports yet. The next problem I had was with uploading. I used the FTP program, but had no idea how it all worked. This was another couple of weeks of torture. So far my progress in this class was looking glum.

FrontPage!!!!!

Ahhhhh, frontpage. My Savior. The reason you are reading this report right now. I honestly don't think I could have done it without this program. For six weeks I struggled and tortured over HTML until someone brought it to my attention. Lucky me, it was already installed on my computer! (Shows how much I know about my own stuff.) Once I discovered that, it was clear sailing from there. I could actually focus on the content of my reports instead of the technical crap. I learned the wonderful technique of copy/paste, and stealing others' pictures. Everything is so much easier on frontpage, it's all right there for you. Everything is quite self explanitory. I spent even more time just cruising the net looking for image sites, and other cool stuff to put on the net. I am so thankful that I don't have to deal with HTML coding anymore.

Since I learned to make and upload my home page, I have never stopped working on improvements. I learn something new every day. I am so proud of my pages, I always tell my family and friends to go see it. I have already been asked by my parents and my aunt to design webpages for their buisnesses. I'm sure that I need alot more work, but I feel that I am improving everyday.

For Future Generations

Key to the process of getting to know the Web and becoming a regular and lifelong cyberspace citizen is TIME. Another important factor in getting to know the ins and outs of the web is time. Time is essential in becoming a seasoned web traveler. As you can see, I think that time is a critical factor in learning and acquiring internet skills and living comfortably in a virtual world; time is needed to adjust, adapt, and cope with the many changes and experiences that come with entering a new world. Other critical factors necessary for becoming acquainted with the Web are: 1) not being afraid to take risks and 2) being willing to explore what the virtual world has to offer.
