03/11/00 9:29 PM: Pertaining to the "road Rage Shootout" article...I do agree with Dr. Driving, that the at any point in time, the whole scenario could have been averted. The first problem I noticed was that one driver was intoxicated. He could not have acted rationally in the state he was in and probably could not reason another way out of the situation. The next problem I notice is that MAYBE, the second driver felt that it was his duty (being that he was in the military) to detain the driver for the police. This kind of sounds like he was trying to do a citizen's arrest or something. Essentially very commendable, but what ensues is quite disturbing. At any given point in time the second driver could have let the police know what happened and let the proper authorities handle it from there. Instead it turns into something sad and discouraging.

Reaction:

The fact that these kinds of things happen is very scary. Just trying to be a thoughtful citizen could result in one's own death. Does this mean we should let these people get away with it? NO, we should let the authorities deal with it and practice defensive driving techniques.
