Surfing Rage

Surfing is a sport that many people take part in.  Being that I am from Hawaii, I too surf occasionally.  The sport is highly competitive and you have to literally be at the right spot to get a good ride.  Sometimes, many people try to be in that one good spot and situations develop due to circumstances that were unintentional to begin with.  This being many reasons such as being in a persons path while he/she is negotiating a wave and ruining his/her ride, cutting off another person going for the same wave, surfing in an uncommon area "claimed" by local persons, etc.  Below are some sites that pertain to Surfing Rage.

Surf Rage is affecting many people who are getting into the water to do something they love.  Surf Rage is getting recognition that it is a problem.  A code of surfing ethic was made in June of 2000 that discusses the rules of surfing.  This code is called the Bells Beach Surfers' Code.  The code is a joint project of the Surf Coast Shire council, Surfing Victoria, the Surfrider Foundation, Surfers Appreciating Natural Environment (SANE) and the Torquay Boardriders Club.  To read up on the ethics of the code, click here.  This code is very important and we have an unwritten code similar to this in Hawaii also.

The next page delves into a more closer look at the different instincts that arise in the different situations of Surf Rage.  The article compares the behavior to primal instincts, religion, territoriality, etc.  A very long and heartfelt article on the age of rage.  I highly recommend reading this article, because it comes from the perspective of a person.  To view it, click here.
