Golf Rageby Gerald L. LacambraDefinition: Nontraditional golf behavior can cause conflicts and even death. |
A New Brand of GolfA new wave of bad etiquette is sweeping the golfing world. Golf traditionalists are blaming Tiger Woods and the younger generation of golfers for their swagger and sometimes inappropriate enthusiasm. "Britain is unlikely to forget last year's Ryder Cup, when American Justin Leonard sank a 45ft putt and his supporters jumped up and down on the green screaming in celebration - even though the match had not finished." Inappropriate golfing actions can lead to golf rage. One of the worst attacks occurred on the 18th hole of a course in New Berlin, Wisconsin, where three young players were impatiently playing behind 50-year-old businessman Richard Stephens, and his 11-year-old son. Frustrated at waiting, the trio played on - and overtook, taunting Mr. Stephens who then ran at the trio "like a crazed man". He died when one of the three hit back - in self defense, jurors decided at the subsequent trial. |
