Definition: When someone paddles out and stalks out a spot, then another surfer comes in and intercepts the wave, surf rage can happen. Surf rage entails can range from stares to even violence.
According to a June 9, 2000 article in the TravelPlanet.com (J.A. Getzlaff 2000), " several of Australia's most popular surfing breaks have become battlegrounds between locals and tourists. And the locals are winning." Locals are getting into fights with tourists, called "kooks" by the Aussies, who allegedly are stealing their waves. Competitions for these waves are high, and so are the emotions tied in with them.
But the unlucky visitor who drops in on a wave and cuts off a local is headed for trouble. Grant Walton, a Sydney surfer, told the BBC what happened to a foreigner who made this very mistake. "They beat him pretty badly," he said. "It was brutal stuff. The bloke got smashed."
