My Selection Number 1
I selected Quincy Tan's
Following Newsgroups
report from Psychology 409b generation 7 as another favorite.
What I liked About Quincy Tan's Report
What impressed me most about this page was his layout. I liked his web design a lot. I think that his use of background and text was great. I really liked the font and color of everything on the page. His page was not all looks either, I also liked the way that he made his comments with another color and labeled it.
The Steps That Led Me To This Report
The steps that got me
here were simple. I first referred to the Index
of all Reports where I selected the Generation
7b link. This took me to the home page of all the students enrolled
in PSY409b generation 7. I then searched their pages to see what
kind of topics that they had. I decided that I liked the newsgroups
topic the best. I then went ahead and bookmarked all the students
newsgroups reports. After bookmarking I slowly eliminated the
the bookmarks to the pages that I did not like because of their difficulty
in reading due to their background choices, color choices and or font selections.
After the first elimination I found some pages with the same content meaning
that they had the same newsgroups that they were reporting on. So
I eliminated the one that was not as appealing and came down to a smaller
list of three to decide from they were: Marshall's
Newsgroups by Marshall Miyoshi, Identifying
Attitudes Through Newsgroup by Ayada Azeez, and the one that I selected
Quincy Tan Following Newsgroups
by Quincy Tan.
Summary
Of Report
There seem to be four parts to Mr. Tan's report. The first part includes a dialogue of two people talking in a newsgroup on aggression. He adds in his comments at the end of the dialogue agreeing with the rise in aggression. I believe that his second part is from a paragraph excerpt form Glen P. Acierto's Psychology 409b Report 1. He agrees with Glen's comments on how the newsgroups are better in netscape than in pine because of the larger audience and the graphical interface. His part three would be a paragraph from Skye's, Report #1- Social Psychology of USENET Newsgroups. In this part they stress the importance and convenience of having bookmarks. In the last section Mr. Tan uses a paragraph from Kristin Evert,G5, Hawaii,Report 1: Social Psychology of USENET Newsgroups: alt.disney.secrets, alt.music.billy-joel, and me. In this section they rebuttal over people who repost messages. They feel that it would be better to use another color or to just include the comment that you are addressing.
Critique Of Report
I really enjoyed the report done by Mr. Tan. I would like to believe that I could do better than him being that I am of a later generation and can add to any faults that I may think I could improve on. I must say that it would be hard to beat his design without copying some aspect of it. I really liked his background. I liked how he presented the referenced material with his own comments. Adding another color was a nice touch for the reader because you knew exactly who was talking. The color changes were not to abrupt where it was distracting. I definitely think the web design was good. I think it could have been improved with a table of contents and a little more volume.
Comparison to Other Reports
In generation 7 there were a lot of neat pages, web design played a greater role than in the prior generations. I found two papers to have the same layout with the way that they presented the material with a designated my comments area. It was these two pages that I liked most in this generation. however I selected Mr. Tan's report because I felt that he had a better page layout. I liked the background and font combination than all the others in his generation. I especially appreciated the effortless reading. In other word his paper was very easy to follow and I could tell exactly when he was stating his idea or comments compared with other people that he was citing. There were some similarities in the selection on the reports and the general layout of commenting on prior generations and using newsgroups and opinions as references.
My Selection Number 2
My second selection
would be from Mary
Aldana G5. Her report was on An
Integration of Traffic Psychology and Cyberspace.
What I Liked About Mary Aldana's Report
I chose Mary's report because I liked a number of things about it. The first thing that got me was the title that she used. I am taking three of Professor Leon's courses and hoped that Mary could give me a better idea of what it was about. The report is easy to read because the background color is not too loud, nor does it clash with the font or color of text. She uses little icons that are not too distracting that relate to the topic. Other pages that I viewed were distracting and could be gaudy. Other pages had fonts that I did not like reading on their chosen backgrounds. Some colors were too loud and distracting to me.
The Steps That Led Me
To This Report
I tried to be as systematic
as possible by starting off at the Index
to all generations page. I then decided to go into the Psychology
459 Generation 5 home page to search for my next report. I went through
each students page and slowly weeded out the ones that I did not like.
My criteria for these pages were simple. First of all they had to be somewhat
appealing. They could not be difficult to read or extremely loud where
it is going to give me a headache. The material had to catch me as well
because if I have the choice I will most definitely not choose a page that
is not interesting, I am not trying to go to bed here. There were 15 pages
altogether. My first option was to select which report I was interested
in viewing. Each of the students reports had the same topics.
I just went along and selected the topic that most interested me.
I then went ahead and bookmarked each students report and started eliminating
the ones that I did not like. After eliminating some of them I went
in to each report and read the first few pages and if it still interested
me then I kept it. If it was something I did not like I removed it.
Which finally led me to this report.
Summary Of Report
Mary's report contains four main sections
they are:
Introduction,
In her introduction she says who she is, and explains the title of her
report. Her explanation for her report is on traffic psychology
and how it is incorporated into the web for reference. She discusses
various issues dealing with Traffic Psychology and attempts to offer useful
resources as teaching aides for our personal references.
Dr.
Driving on the Internet, in this part of the report she tells us about
Dr. Driving and Dr. Nahl's book Inner
Power at the Wheel. She also has a link to Media
Interviews with Dr. Driving about Road Rage, Impatience, and Hostility,
as well as some copied interviews from other sites. She explains
some of the interviews and some of the methods that Dr. Driving uses.
She provides some questions on self analysis by Dr. Driving and includes
her own reactions to certain situations. She includes AWM, and how
it relates to the topic. (A)- I Acknowledge that I'm out of control
at the wheel, (W)-I witness myself being out of control and (M)-I Modify
myself one step at a time. She explains why it is important to use
AWM to become a better driver. Which also leads to a better more
relaxed person. Also in this section are some encouraging words from
other visitors of his home page. Included in this section are self
witnessing questions to answer and her comments to them.
Dr.
Driving in USENET:Philosphies, in this section Mary tells us what newsgroups
Dr. Driving monitors and participates in. She publishes some of the
stories in her paper. She explains that Dr. Driving does not have
the power to change us, rather we have that power whether we choose to
use it or not is up to us. She states that we should be able to take
charge of our own actions because they are the only ones that we can be
responsible for.
My
Favorite Traffic Psychology Resources, in this section Mary goes over
her favorite traffic related pages on the internet. I think that she has
a few neat ones myself like Hawaii
Speedtraps.
Critique
Of Report
I think that I could have done a paper similar to hers. I liked the way that she incorporated the links into her pages and summarized her topics. Her choice of fonts, color and background was not harsh on the eyes, it was fairly easy to read.
Comparison to Other Reports
I enjoyed May Aldana's report over others in her class and generation because I liked the format that she presented her material. her choice of fonts and color made it easy for the reader. She did not have any gaudy or unrelated icons on her paper, rather she had some very good small icons that related to her topic. her page did not take too long to load in fact it was pretty fast.
My Selection Number 3
My third selection came from generation 4 Traffic Psychology 459. The report was done by a Shely Secretar on tailgating.
What I Liked About Shely
Secretar's Report
I liked Shely's report
because it was easy to read, it did not have any fancy pictures, it was
to the point. What I liked best about her report was the way that
she used her links to the other papers critiqued and quoted them.
Her report was short because she only had 3 people to report on but it
would have been a pleasure to see more people on her paper. It was
like following a conversation and not reinventing the wheel. She
played off other people's ideas and expanded what she thought, which is
what I liked. It gave her reaction to each idea. The paper
was smooth and free flowing.
The
Steps That Led Me To This Report
I got to this report very systematically. I first referred to the index of all reports and clicked on to the generation 4 for PSY459. After getting to the home page I was able to go to each students page and realized that they had the same report topics. I then selected the one that interested me the most which was on Tailgating (Report 2). I proceeded to view each persons report and chose Shely's because of her format. There were no fancy pages in this generation unlike in generations 5 and on. This made things a little more difficult because I had to actually read the content before selecting what page to report on.
Summary Of Report
Shely's report was on
Tailgating. She was able to quote and use other generations ideas
and continue on the where they left off. Her paper consisted of three
other people who she got her information from. They were: Sharla
Supnet, AaronReisner, and Terri Slaughter. Shely's report was about
the reactions and feelings that people have when being tailgated, tailgating,
and why they do it along with their feelings on the topic.
Critique
Of Report
I have already mentioned why I liked the report but I think that it could also use a little improvement. It is a bit outdated and the links do not work to her references. Hopefully it will be remedied soon. There was no Table of Contents in this generations work and it makes a difference if you have one or not. I think that it really helps and adds to the reports easy access.
Comparison to Other Reports
I think that most if not all of the reports done by this generation were done in the same general way. They had all referred to prior generations and summarized their work and added their personal comments to it. All of the reports remained fairly simple and easy to read. I did not care for some of the other pages due to the background color selections or the way that they wrote. Shely's page was not the only page with broken links. Other students in the class that used the same references as Shely had the same link problems.
My Selection Number 4
I selected "Report 1 Tailgating Behavior Fair or Unfair by: Kathy Teruya G6" as my fourth selection.
What I Liked About Kathy Teruya's Report
I chose this report after a lot of time spent looking at other reports. I liked this report because the colors were not too loud and it had an interesting topic. If I find a page or report that is to harsh on my eyes or makes me feel uncomfortable then I simply look at another page. I also think that the topic has a great deal to do with my selection. Why should I choose a pretty web page that says absolutely nothing I am interested in. The reading in this paper is easy to follow and it has a smooth rhythm to it. The reading is fun and it keeps the reader interested. Her way of writing is amusing yet serious. She adds a little humor and sarcasm which makes it better reading.
The Steps That Led Me
To This Report
I had come to
find this report by going through the index
of all reports. I selected a generation and started to view the class
topics. At the class
home page I started at the top of the list and worked my way down.
As I proceeded down the list I bookmarked the pages that interested me
with their topics and appearance. I think I valued the appearance almost
as much as the content in this particular generation. Well I came across
4 pages that I thought I may be interested in and worked from there. I
read all 4 of them then I selected the one that I liked best. The other
pages were done by Chris
Murakami, Kristin Subia,
and Jenica Guerra of generation
6. I then went ahead and compared this report to the other reports that
I selected from the other online generational classes and chose my favorite.
Summary Of Report
There are ten sections
in her table of contents. Her first one being the link to the instructions
for report. Her second section would include her
introduction. In the introduction she catches our attention with a
play on words then she goes right into telling us what she intends to do.
She also describes for us a definition of tailgating. I liked the introduction
that she supplied because it both sparked a little interest and gave me
idea of what was to come.
The next section was
entitled Tailgating behaviors
it is actually the heading for the next three sections which are Reinforcing
Tailgating Behavior, Sucking
in Effect, and the Alternatives
to Tailgating. In reinforcing tailgating behavior Kathy addresses why
people tailgate and what makes them continue. She considers the instrumental
conditioning to be key here because she defines a reward for the tailgater.
I like her reasoning and critical thinking in this part. The Sucking in
Effect is what I believe to be misinterpreted by her in the section. Then
again I am not an expert either. I was thought to believe that the Sucking
in effect is when you leave a large enough gap in front of you, another
car cuts in. Her interpretation was the other way in contained tailgating
and that is what the sucking in effect was. I did not understand. In the
last subsection called Alternatives to tailgating she provides us with
references to other reports where people are against tailgating and explain
their reasons.
The next major section
is Moral implications of
tailgating. Kathy tries to explain whether or not tailgating is moral
or fair. She uses her own opinions and references other students opinions
on the issue at hand. I liked his section because it showed other peoples
opinions and ideas.
In her, My
own behavior, starts her off on her next section. In this part of her
report she shares with us a personal story where she was involved in an
accident. She gives us her justifications as to why she tailgates and does
not like it when others tailgate her. She says how she is a hypocrite but
says that she is a lot more aware now than she used to be. I also thought
that she was a hypocrite and that this section did not do her much justice.
In her
conclusion, she reports what she now feels about tailgating. It appears
that she has a whole new perspective on the situation. She is now against
it and she tries to suppress any anxiety of getting aggressive towards
other drivers that may tailgate because it is both hazardous and uncalled
for.
The last portion
of the Report is entitled Future
Generations. She closes with word to the wise. She warns us not to
let in to temptation. She tries to tell us to change before something bad
happens. Her analogy is one where she says "Have
you ever had something terrible happen and wish to god that you could go
back in time and do it differently? Well, here is your chance. Maybe nothing
has happened yet, you've been luck so far. That does not mean you will
always be so fortunate. So here it is, right here right now, stop it before
you destroy your life or the lives of others. Make the choice to be emotionally
in control of your future."
Critique Of Report
I enjoyed reading Kathy's report on tailgating and feel that I learned a bit more. I think that if you read this report with an open mind you can get a lot out of it, and maybe control or curb your desire to tailgate. There were a few spelling errors but other than that I really enjoyed the report.
Comparison to Other Reports
Kathy's report was good because it did not take long to load. The color scheme was not my favorite but it did work and was better than others in her class. I also enjoyed being able to see her thought process and follow along what she did. She was not very decorative. her selection of Fonts was ok but it could have easily been improved if it were more unique.
How Does My Report Fair with Others in My Generation
I think that my report fairs just fine. I think that there are other pages out there that are better but I am happy with what I have done here. I think I was succesful in creating a page that is simple to read without any rally loud graphics. The background works well with the selected fonts and colors. I also happen to think that I got my points across fairly well. At the given time all the links work and I am happy.
Suggestions to Future Generations
I think that this
is one way in which the generational curriculum be best served. To allow
it to become a large and ever growing database of self witnessing reports
on how each person drives so that someone can come along and use all of
this valuable information to solve something of importance. The database
could give clues to inhibit or remove the road rage from drivers.
