Mary Rose Isnec's (G5) Report on Social Psychology of Newsgroups

Ms. Isnec briefly explains to us the steps she took when she was looking for topics that interest her in newsgroups discussions. She talked about her experiences while selecting the newsgroups and mentioned some terms used in newsgroups like flaming, threads, and so on. She picked two different newsgroups which she described as the yin and yang of newsgroups. She chose alt.tasteless.jokes and soc.culture.filipino newsgroups. For each newsgroups, she described and explained what goes on in their discussions by copying and pasting an article from each newsgroups. She also mentioned that she had mixed feelings when she participated in the discussions for both newsgroups. She felt disappointed when nobody replied to her postings, but there were times when she felt overwhelmed with the number of replies she received in just a matter of time.

One thing I really liked about her report is the part where she discussed the impact and importance of newsgroups to her. She said that in newsgroups it is the same interest that unites various types of people despite the physical differences because there is no physical contact between them. People can't see the color of your skin, your ethnic background, and how you look. They only care about the content of your postings and nothing else. In addition, she said that in the internet our opinions of each other are based on our minds and not our impression of how others look. She also mentioned that words are the power on the net.

After reading Ms. Isnec's report, I found out that people need not be physically involved to have a relationship. Sometimes, it seems to me that it's more sincere to have a discussion on the net because you don't have to worry about people's physical impression on you. Human relationship doesn't have to be physical, but it can also just be about what's inside you and what's on your mind. And in the internet, that's the only thing that matters because you don't get to physically interact with people you talk to. One does not have to worry about rejection because the other person cannot see you. This only implies that the future of our society and its evolution might depend on the internet because this newest technology allows us to visit places we haven't visited yet and meet people from other countries without leaving the comfort of our homes. Also, we can learn other people's culture in just a touch of a button.
