Jill's Report

What are Web Search Engines?

My Impression on Jill's Report

The reason why I selected Jill's report was because of my interest in Web search engines. I wanted to learn about the different types of engines and how to access them. I chose Jill's page because it was attractive in color and it seemed to be the most organized with her table of contents and the various links available.

The Selection Process

I browsed through the generations to see what the different students had to offer. Each generation had different subject matters. When I came across Generation 4 of Psychology 409a, I noticed that the subject for Report #3 was Search Engines. I thought that this would be an interesting topic to review so I browsed through many reports done by this generation. I browsed through at least 7 different pages. I spent about 15 minutes reading through what they each had to say and I compared the different organizational attempts and the different colors that they used. That is how I narrowed down to the final pick. My final pick included,
Aaron Takahashi's Report, Carol Ohta's Report.and Jill UmetsuŒs ReportI had a hard time in deciding which report to use but I came to the conclusion to use JillŒs page. I liked the color scheme and her organization. Most of all, the reason why I chose her page was for the content and informationa that I thought was very useful.

A Brief Synopses of Jill's Report

The topic of this report is the use of Search Engines. Jill goes into depth about what a Web search engine is (a program used to seach for information and Web page), what it is like when using a search engine when inexperienced (it is not that hard), advice for using the search engines (make sure you have plenty of time when using search engines), prior generationsΠthoughts (search engines are simple to use), how search engines work (a brief explanation), her own search on three engines (using Yahoo!, Infoseek and Lycos) and what she learned about the different search engines (they are like using the catalog in the library).

My Reaction to Jill's Report

My reaction to Jill's page was rather positive, otherwise I would not have selected her page. I think that she did a good job in researching search engines and their types. I think that I would have been interesting to study this topic because I don't know how to use search engines to their fullest capacity. I would always get frustrated when they didn't find what I was looking for. I think that she covered a broad band of what search engines are about. There must be so much more information about search engines out there that it is important to update this topic.

David's Report

Cyber-Therapy, Driving Therapy, and Cyberspace Counter-Culture

My Impressions on David's Report

What first impressed me about David's report was his presentation of information. He uses many borders and it caught my eye. I thought that it looked professional and it stood out from the rest. He also had some catchy subtitles that caught my eye. One read, Cyber-Therapy: "To be or not to be" I thought that was really cute.

The Selection Process

Before I selected David's page, I went through a very extensive search. I went though the different generations and tried to find topics that were of interest to myself. I came across the topic of Cyber-Therapy, Driving Therapy, and Cyber space Counter-Culture in generation 5 for psychology 409a. I thought that this topic would be interesting because it came out in class and I was intrigued by it. I personally donŒt know if cyber-therapy is a good idea. The selection process for this topic took about 45 minutes. I wanted to make sure that I explored all of the pages. I made my final selection by comparing the information and the presentation of the information. My final selection comprised of
Dan Hamamoto's Report,Ryan Shintani's Report, and David Kahoaka's Report. I finally narrowed it down to David's report because of the information and the presentation of his page.

A Brief Synopses

In this report, the topics of cyber-therapy, driving therapy, and cyberspace counter-culutre are covered. David researched these topics and found articles that related to these topics. He also gives a brief synopses of what he thinks are the advantages and disadvantages of Cyber-therapy, what he thinks of Driving therapy and what Cyberspace counter-culture is all about. Basically, David writes about the different articles that he read and what he thought about them.

My Reaction to David's Report

I was very impressed with David's page because it seemed like he put a lot of time and effort into his page. Not only information wise but also presentation wise. I thought that it was interesting that cyber-therapy even exists. I would have never thought that technology would go so far as to perform therapy. I thought that the articles that David selected were very useful. I would propose that the information get updated periodically because technology is constantly changing.

Selection #3

Kathy's Report

Tailgating Behavior: Fair or Unfair

My Impressions on Kathy's Report

What first impressed me about her page was the topic content. I thought that it would be interesting to read a report that dealt with tailgating. When I drive to and from town in prime time traffic, I notice the amount of tailgating that goes on. Another reason why I chose Kathy's page over someone elses was because of her opening sentence. It read, ?Ok, bust out the beer and pupus, we're going to the UH game. OOPS, sorry wrong tailgating", I thought that was very funny and it caught my attention.

The Selection Process

I was going through the reports from different generations until a came across a topic that interested me. This topic just so happened to be tailgating which I thought was very interesting because it is so common among drivers on and off the freeway. I went through different reports within generation 6 of psychology 459 before I came across Kathy's. It took me about 45 minutes to select my third report. Within generation 6, my final selection was between
Gary Unowho did his report on Driving Personality Make-Overs: Is it for me?, Jenica Guerra who did her report on Driving Cartoons and Kathy Teruya who did her report on tailgating. It was a tough decision. However, I ended up selecting Kathy's report because I wanted to learn more about why people tailgate while driving; especially because I tend to tailgate other cars.

Back to Index

A Brief Synopses

The topic of this report is tailgating, is it fair or unfair. Kathy covers the definition of tailgating, tailgating behaviors (reinforcing tailgating behaviors (reasons why people tailgate), sucking in effect (to keep other drivers from entering your lane), althernative to tailgating(allow the tailgater to pass)), moral implications to tailgating (Tailgating is NOT fair) and her own behavior (nervousness). In each section, Kathy refers to previous generations and includes what certain students feel about tailgating. I thought this was rather interesting because not only do you get her point of view of tailgating but you also get another students perspective.

My Reaction to Kathy's Report

KathyŒs Report was very interesting to read and I thought that it was very informative. I think that everybody can do the samething that she did, presentation and information wise. I only thing that I would change would be in the table of contents. Under tailgating behaviors, I would indicate that reinforcing tailgating behaviors, sucking in effect and alternatives to tailgating are sub categories. To advance the topic I would try to add in some statistics to explain the severity of tailgating. However, overall I think that Kathy did a great job on her report.

Tami's Report

Portrayals of Driving Behavior on TV: What We See on Television and the Effects this May Have

My Impressions on Tami's Report

What first impressed me about Tami's report was the fact that she organized it in a way that I could understand. The other reports within the same generation was rather difficult to comprehend. What also made it impressive was the fact that she simply stated what to expect in her report. She used limited colors but yet it was attractive.

The Selection Process

For a long time, people have been saying that television has a strong influence on how certain people behave. It has been an ongoing issue that violence on television has a big influence on our children. With this in mind, I thought it would be interesting to see how television also influences our driving behavior. I went through several different reports from generation 7, psychology 459 and came to the final selection of three reports from
Marshall Miyoshi, Kris Burlem and Tami Hashimoto. I selected these three based on their presentation and the information. It took me about 40 minutes to go through each report. All of the reports basically looked the same; in context. So, I based my selection on the reports that were slightly different from the rest. I made Tami's report my final selection because I could understand what the point of the report was and how the different ratings worked.

Back to Index

A Brief Synopses

The main topic of this report was the portrayals of driving behavior on television. Tami also covered her own observations/analysis and evaluation on films/videos, cartoons, television and commercials. With each observation, Tami includes the day, date, time, and name of program. She also gives a brief description of events so the reader knows what's going on, a list of specific behaviors that occured, an analysis and evaluation and a rating for prominence, reality and danger.

My Reaction to Tami's Report

I really enjoyed reading Tami's report because I didn't realize the involvement of cars in so many of today's entertainment world. I think that Tami did a good job in evaluating the circumstances and also in selecting a good variety of shows and events. I was very impressed how she organized her report without using fancy borders and links. I think that I could do the same as Tami. Her report wasn't original from the rest of the class but for some reason, by reading her report, I could understand what the point of her paper was. I think because it was sectioned by category and not topic, it made it easier to follow.

Comparisons of My 4 Favorite Generational Reports

Jill's Report Compared to Other G4 Reports

As I brwosed through other reports from the same generation (G4), I came across a lot of diversity compared to Jill's page. I noticed that some students put more time into their pages than others information and creativity wise. I also noticed that certain students have different creative abilities than others. I think that through their home pages, they can express their thoughts and feeling anyway that they want to. I think if someone does not feel strongly about a certain subject matter, then they may not put their time and energy into it. This may account for some of the diversity that I have seen within the reports. Appearance wise, I think that we were taught to keep our pages simple and straight to the point and I think that is why some students stay with the suggested format of their page.

David's Report Compared to Other G5 Reports

As I browsed through several reports from generation 5, I came to the conclusion that some pages had themes like bugs bunny, some pages liked bright colors and some pages just got the job done. These comparisons were based on appearance. In comparison to David's report on cyber-therapy, most all of the reports came to the same conclusion that it has its pros and cons. I think that the effort put into each page depends on the individual. That determines the differences and similarities within each report.

Kathy's Report Compared to Other G6 Pages

As I skimmed through the different generational pages of G6 (Psychology 459), I noticed that they are all simple with little graphics. With these pages in mind, it makes Kathy's page look fancy. Kathy didn't use too many graphics but her classmates didn't either. I was trying to think of the reason why all of the pages are so simple in design. I was also wondering why Kathy's page was the only that covered tailgating when everyone else did the portrayal of driving. I think the reason why all of the pages basically looked the same would be because either they didnŒt know how to alter their page or they didn't want to alter their page.

Tami's Report Compared to Other G7 Pages

The generational reports of G7 (psychology 459) vary by design, organization and content. I viewed a couple of pages that had sound effects, a section about their life and family, and some whom stuck to what was required. In comparison to everyone else's page, Tami's page was rather simple. However, sometimes simple is better because certain pages took a long time to load and I got impatient. However, it was interesting to see what the different students came up with. The only page that really stood out was the one with the sound effects
Travis Abe's Page From sound to plain graphics, generation G7 varied in artistic style. However, the information style was rather unoriginal. I think that everyone attempted Report #1 in the same fashion.

My Opinions on my classmates pages

I think that everyone did a great job on their generational reports. It was interesting to see which reports everyone chose. Everyone has their own interpretation of the assignment and I think that is what makes them unique. I think because this our first report that we had to do, everyone seemed to be a little intimidated. However, everyones pages are terrific!! Considered to everyone else, I feel like my page is just mediocre. It's nothing special. Great job everybody!!

My Suggestions for Future Generations

My two suggestions/tips for future generations is:

*to start early with ALL of the work!
*ask questions when you need help. (I asked Dr. James at least 2 - 4 questions every week)
