Introduction
This report examines various types of safety activism on the web.  All of the organizations contained in this report have agendas designed to make driving on our highways a little bit safer.  Although most of these organizations advocate safety in several capacities, for the sake of order, I have grouped them  according some major categories safety activism.  Under each section's heading you will find information about the organization, a short critique, and a link to that organizations web site.  There is a lot of great information here, so please take your time and have fun!

Safety Through Improved Vehicle Designs
Photo from Technical Services

The following web sites examine various issues relating to the safety of vehicle designs.  I believe that safety activism through improved vehicle designs is very important.  Unfortunately no matter how well we drive, accidents will always happen.  No matter how careful we are, we cannot control the other driver who may be drunk, speeding, or impaired by poor driving conditions.  Thankfully I have never been in an accident.  However, I have seen the results of some very serious collisions.  In some of these accidents, if it had not been for the design of the car they were driving, then the people involved might be dead.

Truck Driving, Truck Accidents  is a web site maintained by  Technical Services, a company that specializes in forensic engineering.  This company, located in Portland, OR and Chicago, IL, conducts research and offers legal services to truck drivers involved in accidents.  Their services include such things as computer simulation, expert testimony on rig construction and driver performance.

This web site advocates safety through the improved design of commercial trucks.  Technical Services conducts laboratory research and collects case studies to determine risk factors, design flaws and unsafe driving practices.  The companys' reports illustrate research and information that if applied, will greatly enhance the safety of commercial trucks.  From their list of links, it appears that this organization receives support from the National Crash Analysis Center (NCAC) and various law firms.

Since my brother is a commercial truck driver, I was especially interested in this site.  I read several of the reports and passed much of the information on to my brother.  The information I found included statistics on accidents involving trucks, safety tips for drivers, and design suggestions for truck manufacturers. The site also features one company that is taking the lead in truck safety,  Freightliner.  (The photograph is Frieghliner's latest model which is touted as being the one of the safest on the road.)

Although the site contain lots of valuable information, it was somewhat unclear whether this organization's motives are strictly for safety activism or for profit.  Some of the reports seemed like solicitations for people to file lawsuits against truck manufacturers.  In fact, one portion of the site is solely devoted legal links!

Through its magazine, Consumer Reports, Consumers Union gives the public information on important issues such as recall information and the results of vehicle safety tests.  In addition, Consumers Union also lobbies the government on issues regarding consumer safety.  Currently, Consumers Union is championing a battle against the Isuzu Trooper which is prone to roll-overs.  Although Consumers Union is sometimes criticized for extreme testing methods, its endeavors are usually supported by other consumer groups and various government agencies.

Do to its visibility, Consumers Union is very effective in its endeavors to promote vehicle safety.  In fact, one of the most important issues of Consumer Reports Magazine is its annual vehicle safety issue.  Included in the issue are the results of government and Consumers Union's own tests on hundreds of vehicles.  Anytime I have even considered purchasing a certain car, I have looked it up in the Consumer Reports vehicle safety issue.  From this information, I was able to make an informed decision regarding the safety of the car I was considering purchasing.

Because it is a government agency, the NHTSA receives a lot of support from the President and many members in Congress.  This also makes the NHTSA more powerful than other organizations.  Through the secretary of transportation, the  NHTSA has the power to set and enforce safety standards.  In one section of this web site, you will find  Title 49, United States Code-Chapter 301, which outlines regulations regarding motor vehicle safety.  In addition to creating legislation to protect drivers, the NHTSA also offers consumers information regarding recalls, government safety tests, injury prevention and new technology.

Even though the NHTSA is a bureaucracy, it is fairly effective in its efforts to ensure that vehicles are safe.  Their guidelines are important to protect consumers from faulty or dangerous vehicles.  Without the NHTSA, the average consumer would have no way of knowing if a vehicle was safe.  In addition, the NHTSA is able to enforce penalties against companies and individuals who do not follow their regulations.  Although some organizations like Consumers Union would like the NHTSA to raise its regulations, I feel that NHTSA's standards are reasonable.

  Combating Drinking and Driving

 Some Sobering Statistics:
Statistics from National Gradd Web site
In 1996 17,126 people were killed in alcohol related crashes.  More
than 1 million were injured.  This represents one alcohol related
fatality every 31 minutes. (NHTSA)  From these statistics, it is not difficult to see why I feel that it is so important for us  to work to eliminate drinking and driving.  Unfortunately, like many people, I myself know people who have been involved in alcohol related accidents.  The following sites offer various ways to curb drinking and driving.

        What is MADD?
MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is a non-profit grass roots
organization with more than 600 chapters nationwide. MADD is not a
crusade against alcohol consumption. Our focus is to look for effective
solutions to the drunk driving and underage drinking problems, while
supporting those who have already experienced the pain of these senseless
        crimes.

        MADD's History
MADD was founded by a small group of California women in 1980
after a 13-year-old-girl was killed by a hit-and-run driver. He had been
out of jail on bail for only two days for another hit-and-run drunk driving
crash and had three previous drunk driving arrests and two convictions.

MADD contends that drunk driving collisions are not "accidents."  They maintain that these collisions were caused by an individual choosing to drink and drive.  With support the of the media, schools, politicians, and families of victims of drunk driving collisions, MADD advocates stronger laws and stricter punishments for drunk drivers.  It has been very effective in getting tougher laws passed in many states.

I agree with MADD on their stand that driving drunk is a choice.  I also support their stance to institute stronger laws against drunk drivers.  Unfortunately there are people on the roads that as well as being antisocial drivers (I use anti-social to mean drivers who break the law and create dangerous situations within our driving society) are also immoral drivers (I use immoral and moral to refer to a person's motivation regarding their driving).  In addition, they are immoral drivers, because they do not care that they are endangering innocent people.

Since, these individuals do not have the necessary internal controls to keep them from acting in an immoral manner they require control to come from an external force.  In the case of drunk driving, stronger laws may inhibit a person from driving drunk out of fear of getting caught.  I also advocate stricter punishments for repeat offenders.  These are the types of individuals for whom no amount of external control will keep them from committing crimes.  As a result, they should be removed from society altogether in order to protect the rest of the population.

Against Drunk Driving is a Canadian, non-profit, registered charity, founded in 1983
OUR MISSION IS:
To Reduce Death and Injury
Caused By Impaired Driving
Through Educational Means.

Like MADD, Against Drunk Driving (ADD) was born from one family's tragedy.  On Friday, April 1, 1983, fourteen year old Neil Gray was killed by a drunk driver at 7:30 pm while riding his bike near his house.  Deciding that they would not allow their son to die in vain, Neil's parents, Ruth and John started ADD.

ADD has been very active in Canada.  It is a member or affiliate member of several organizations including:

OCCID - A founding member of the Ontario Community Council on Impaired Driving.
OACP - An affiliate member of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police.
Peel Regional Police - Affiliate member of the Community Accreditation Representatives.
Founding member of the OPERATION LOOKOUT® Communities
Founding member of the Metro Toronto Safe and Sober Driving Coalition.
Founding member of the Safe and Sober Driving Coalition of Peel Region.
Founding member of the Brampton Safe City.
Member of the Mississauga Board of Trade.

In it's  Position Paper, ADD outlines its mission regarding how organizations can combat drunk driving.  Among their views, ADD supports strict punishments for drunk drivers, rehabilitation for drunk drivers, community awareness of the hazards of drinking and driving, safe ride home projects and legislation to prohibit alcohol advertisements that are attractive to minors.

One of ADD's programs is Operation Lookout this simple campaign empowers communities by encouraging people to report suspected drunk drivers to police.  ADD contends that Operation Lookout is an effective deterrent, because not only police, but ordinary citizens could land drunk drivers in jail.

I like this program, because it encourages citizens to be proactive in the fight against drunk driving.  It is important that drivers always be on the lookout for those people who are irresponsible enough to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking.  Hopefully, by reporting these drivers, the police will be able to apprehend them before they injure or kill an innocent victim.

Welcome to the Home Page of the Campaign Against Drunk Driving (CADD).
Our mission is to eliminate drunk driving as the leading cause of death of young
Americans. To do that we must bring all drunk driving under strict and permanent control.

Campaign Against Drunk Driving (CADD) was started by Sandy Golden who was the first executive director of MADD and was one of its the original co-founders.  However, in a paper outlining CADD's     plan to curb drinking and driving, Mr. Golden blasts MADD saying his is "the only one not to sell out to the alcohol industry." Currently Mr. Golden operates CADD with his own money and donations.  He appears to have the support of many politicians including former senator Bob Dole and President George Bush, who declared drunk driving a "National Crisis" in 1988.  In his site, Mr. Golden urges citizens to petition their legislators to work to pass legislation to curb drunk driving.  Mr. Golden call for a "National Uniform Drunk Driving Control Code," which is outlined below:

The Proposed Legislation:
To best control drunk driving we must have Federal legislation that would
set up, under the appropriate governmental agency, a standards setting
group on drunk driving. Their mission would be to develop a non-political,
unbiased, honest, common sense based, logical "National Uniform Drunk
Driving Control Code" and a model master plan for states and communities
to follow. With uniform standards and a master plan for drunk driving
control, our citizens will equally enjoy the best protection possible in all
states and communities. The standards will spell out exactly what state laws
are needed and exactly what policies and procedures are needed. States and
communities that do not implement the plan would be subjected to losing a
pro rata share of highway funds. Because of the urgency of the drunk
driving problem and the dire threat to human life and limb, the national code
needs to be developed on an emergency basis the same as if a bomb was
about to go off an destroy an entire U.S. city.  Standards could be
established within 6 months it the commitment from our leaders is present.
                            --Sandy Golden (CADD)

It seems as if CADD has some friends in high places, however I am sure he has equally many enemies.   Mr. Golden suggests that congress should hold hearings and determine the best way to curb drinking and driving.  However, in his paper outlining CADD's plan Mr. Golden clearly blames the alcohol industry.  He says "..their [the beer industry] greed has corrupted our democratic process because they buy votes from state and federal legislators to protect their interests and profits."

I agree with Mr. Golden that the alcohol industry does have strong political influence when it comes to passing drunk driving legislation.  However, Mr. Golden seems to be suggesting that if alcohol companies were legislated more, than perhaps less people would become addicted thereby decreasing the number of drunk drivers.  I am not sure such a plan would be effective-just look at our drug problem.  However, I do agree that this is a serious problem and perhaps some unbiased, non-political research could shed some light on the situation.

Please Support National GRADD...Don't Drink and Drive National Group Rides And Designated Drivers is a non-profit organization working to save lives from drunken driving by maintaining a national network of safe ride home programs in college communities. National GRADD assists in the development of new programs and the improvement of existing services by providing programming resources and making it easy for schools to work together.

This web site aims to promote safe driving alternatives for college students who choose to go out drinking.  Instead of designating a driver, National GRADD advocates safe ride programs.  This program has received support from colleges all over the nation, the media, and my personal support.  I feel that this type of program is superior to designated driver programs in that you do not have to rely on the designated driver who often times is the person who does not abstain from drinking, but merely drinks less than the binge drinkers.

I have been to parties at colleges that have used this type of system.  Often the safe ride was a shuttle (usually a bus) that ran numerous times back and forth between the party and the dorms.  I appreciated the shuttle, because I did not have to worry about my friends getting behind the wheel of a car nor did I have to worry about where to park.  Although there are some critics that argue that this type of program encourages college students to drink more, I disagree.  These parties were no different from any other.  Most everyone drank relatively the same amount and most people were intoxicated.  The difference, however, was that no one drove home drunk!

The Indiana Regional Headquarters of
Towing Operators Working to Eliminate Drunk
Driving intends to remove every
intoxicated driver from every road in the
United States of America.
This will be accomplished through the
implementation of three systems:

  • Physical Removal of intoxicated drivers from the roads.
  • Assistance with prosecution of intoxicated drivers who refuse to access the service.
  • Provision of education concerning the effects of intoxicated driving.
  •
T.O.W.E.D is a non-profit organization of towing operators who offer free tows and rides home to intoxicated drivers.  T.O.W.E.D allows drivers to retain their anonymity and does not notify law enforcement agencies for drivers who chose to use their services.  T.O.W.E.D began in 1986 and since its inception, T.O.W.E.D has hauled over 150,000 intoxicated drivers!
In addition, T.O.W.E.D also offers a dramatic program called, docu-drama to high schools and colleges.  This program was the dream child of tow truck operator Randal Query, who believed that the information students received regarding alcohol related crashes was "politically correct" and full of "empty facts."  As a result, he created docu-dramas to graphically reenact the seriousness of a drunk driving collision.  These reenactments illustrate their message using mangled cars that were actually involved in drunk driving accidents and teen actors who play the parts of victims.  Students watch as volunteer law enforcement, fire, and rescue personnel try to rescue the victims.  The scene is dramatic and designed to shock students who are not told that the crash is staged until afterwards.

Although some may argue that staging a violent and bloody crash is traumatic to students, I disagree.  Like most high school students I thought I was invincible.  At age eighteen, you think that nothing can harm you.  However, when I saw the aftermath of the alcohol related crash site where one of my friends was killed and four others landed in the hospital it really hit home.  Even though the driver was below the legal limit, his BAC level violated Nebraska's zero tolerance law for minors and his driving was likely impaired.  When I saw the site, the victims had already been removed.  I had no idea at the time who they were, but I felt like I had been punched in the stomach.  I saw the mangled cars, tree that had been cut in half and the blood on the pavement and I remember feeling like I had been hit with a brick.  You cannot image the seriousness of such an accident until you see it for yourself.

I am not sure if seeing these accidents will deter young people from drinking and driving, but I think it will make them think before they drink.  However, if someone does not plan out their entertainment ahead of time and finds that they should not drive home they can always call their local T.O.W.E.D chapter.  With support from law enforcement agencies, other activists groups including MADD and corporations like Wal-Mart, Taco Bell, and Pepsi, I hope that every community will soon have a  T.O.W.E.D chapter.

      Improving Your Driving Skills
         Graphic from DMV ONLINE

I think that probably everyone could improve their driving skills.  Perhaps if we were more skilled drivers, then our roads might be a little bit safer.  The sites that follow all relate to learning how to becomes a better driver.

"Teaching students and experienced drivers the risk analysis, judgment, and
decision making skills that have traditionally been the domain only of pilots."

Command Training System is a company that advocates safety by teaching drivers mental as well as motor skills.  Their driving system is based on the system that the military uses to train its pilots.   Command Training System seems to have support from the military (as evidenced by their presentation at the 1997 annual Fly-In Convention).  In one portion of the web site,  Command Training System  has a SELF ASSESSMENT OF HAZARDOUS ATTITUDES, that drivers can take.  At the end of the test, The Five Hazardous Attitudes about driving are outlined.

I found this site to be very practical and informative.  I agree wholeheartedly with Command Training System's philosophy that teaching drivers how to think and react at the wheel makes them better drivers.  Their technique seems very through, because it teaches drivers that driving is a cognitive and motor skill.  In addition, Command Training System stresses that driving is a privilege and all drivers must be responsible.  If all drivers learned these mental and motor skills, then perhaps our roads would be a little bit safer.

Traffic Safety Information Village contains a plethora of information regarding driving.  I chose to list them under the section related to improving driving behavior, because they seem to focus a lot on how to teach driving and licensing laws.  In addition, this site appears to have the support of many professional driving schools and academicians who list their research on the site.

One particular article I found, Effectiveness and Role of Driver Education and Teaching in a Graduated Licensing System discussed whether graduated licensing systems should give "time credits" with the completion of driver education/training programs.  The article found that, "There is some evidence that at least some driver education programs can successfully teach driving skills and impart knowledge, but skills and knowledge acquired in training do not necessarily produce driving behavior that leads to reduced crash involvement."  As a result, the author recommended that young drivers should not be allowed full driving privileges sooner if they complete a driver education/training course.

Although I found Traffic Safety Information Village very interesting, I was frustrated because I could not access all of the site.  In order to access certain parts of the site, one must purchase a membership.  Although the cost of the membership is fairly modest, $55.00 per year, the site would be more effective in getting it's message to people if it was entirely free.  Perhaps Traffic Safety Information Village could generate revenue by selling advertising instead of memberships.

If you are a resident of Los Angeles or Orange County, and you have not attended TRAFFIC SCHOOL in the past 18 months, you can take class with MR. TRAFFIC. The world famous comedy club THE IMPROV operates the largest COMEDY based traffic school in America. You'll spend 8 hours having fun and learning while getting your traffic ticket taken off your record and avoiding the insurance consequences.
Mr. Traffic's Comedy Driving School is a unique driving school based on humor and common sense.  The school seems to have the support of local law enforcement and California courts.  The site offers schedules of classes, sample California driving tests, information for new drivers and a lot of laughs!
It is difficult to determine the effectiveness of this type of driving school.  However, since the school is unique, it might attract people who would not otherwise go to a driving school.

Picture From the Police Car Web Site

This section showcases some of the things that police, politicians, and the automobile insurance industry are doing to promote safety.  Often, police, politicians, and the insurance industry are only portrayed negatively.  I wanted to include this section to show that these people do more than just give us tickets and make our car insurance expensive.  The sites in this section prove that these folks are trying to make a difference by making our highways safer.

Honolulu Police Department, like all law enforcement agencies has a stake in keeping out streets safe.  Everyday on my morning commute from central Oahu to Manoa, I see the officers patrolling the streets.  Their presence on the highways is a deterrent to those who are tempted to speed.  Currently the Honolulu Police Department is running a public service campaign to remind parents to keep their keiki (children) buckled.

Although the campaign is not featured on the web site, I think it is an excellent idea.  Motorist who observe cars with young children not buckled in car seats call the license plate into police.  The police send a letter to the owner of the car explaining the seat belt law and reminding them to keep their kids buckled at all times.  I think this type of campaign is good, because it involves the community and helps the police department be more proactive in promoting safety.  In addition, it gives parents the opportunity to correct the problem to avoid a possible $200.00 fine and/or serious injury to their child.

The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) is a nonprofit,
public service organization that gathers, processes, and
publishes data on the ways in which insurance losses vary
among different kinds of vehicles. It is closely associated
with and funded through the Insurance Institute for Highway
Safety, which is wholly supported by automobile insurers.

The Highway Loss Data Institute web site is full of lots of great information.  The site is funded by The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety which is supported by automobile insurers.  Naturally, automobile insurers have strong, economic interests in making our streets safer.  This site advocates safety in every aspect.  The site examines such issues as:  seat belt laws, airbags, car designs, and traffic laws.
Because it has the support of the automobile insurance industry, I think that The Highway Loss Data Institute is probably very effective in its endeavors.  If the institute finds that a car is dangerous, then the automobile insurance companies will likely increase the insurance rates.  The increased rates may deter consumers from purchasing that car and in turn place pressure on the makers to improve the safety of their cars.

I used the site to check the safety of the car I currently drive.  I found that my 2-door, Chevy Cavalier, does not fair well in collisions.  However, it scored "above average" in theft.  So, although my car is not likely to be stolen, it is likely to get me killed in a serious accident!

GOVERNOR SIGNS LEGISLATION IMPLEMENTING GRADUATED LICENSING SYSTEM FOR YOUNG DRIVERS TO MAKE ILLINOIS HIGHWAYS SAFER FOR EVERYONE SPRINGFIELD, ILL.
-- Gov. Jim Edgar today signed legislation implementing a graduated, three-stage licensing system to help young drivers become better drivers and to make Illinois highways safer.

I chose this press release to show that some states are taking a proactive approach to safety.  I think graduated licensing systems are a great idea.  These types of systems teach young drivers that driving is a privilege that must be earned.  In addition, these systems ensure that drivers have plenty of practical driving experience before they are allowed to drive on their own.  I applaud Gov. Edgar and other legislators who take the initiate to make our streets safer.

Ah, to be sixteen with the keys to your own car...  With my parents help (the down payment) I bought a brand new 1992 Chevy Cavalier shortly after turning sixteen.  Although I was (still am ) a responsible individual, I love speed!  My first speeding ticket was on I-80 in Nebraska on my way from Omaha to Lincoln, a month after getting my car.  I was doing 93 mph in a 65 mph zone.  Thankfully the cop was understanding of what it is like to be young and stupid and he only gave me a ticket for the my speed and did not give me a citation for reckless driving (30 mph over the speed limit qualifies as reckless driving in the State of NE and citations can be given at the officer's discretion).  Having been sixteen, I understand why teenage drivers are the highest risk group for accidents and tickets.  Hopefully some of these links will help both parents and young drivers be safe.

DriveSafe is a grassroots nonprofit effort that will result in a safer driving environment by enlisting the help of the general public in monitoring and reporting driving behavior - whether courteous and safe or risky and dangerous.   It is our goal to reduce everyone's insurance costs and hospital expenses so that young adults remain out of the courtrooms, emergency rooms and cemeteries. When your teenager is driving a car with our sticker it helps everyone to drive safer.

DriveSafe is a clever little campaign to have parents put bumper stickers on their cars with the DriveSafe toll free number.  If other drivers observe the teen driving in a rude or unsafe manner, they can call DriveSafe and the parent's of the teen will be notified of the incident.  The campaign, which began in Georgia is modeled after those "How am I driving" stickers on commercial trucks.  The program has a whole slew of supporters including:  law enforcement agencies, parents groups, local media, and medical professionals.

Now, as a more responsible driver, I love this idea!  Although I must admit that at sixteen I would have been appalled if my parents put a DriveSafe sticker on my new car.  However, this simple sticker gives parents a good way to monitor their teen's driving even when they are not around.  It is a well known fact that teenagers drive very differently when their parents are not in the car!  Perhaps the fear of getting in trouble will make these teens drive safer.  In addition, teens who receive calls commending them on their driving performance, are eligible for awards and prizes.

    AN ACCIDENT AVOIDANCE COURSE
FOR NEW DRIVERS IN YOUR COMMUNITY

New Driver Car Control Driving Clinic is a special driving course for parents to help make their new drivers safe drivers.  The clinic contends that "Driving is a psycho-motor skill like hitting a curve ball or playing a concerto. It cannot be developed in a classroom setting. It demands practice, practice, practice."  New Driver Car Control Driving Clinic which seems to be a community service of Saab and other businesses, appears to have the support of local law enforcement, parents, and schools.

I agree that driving is a psycho-motor skill.  Not only does it require the motor skills to be able to maneuver a 2000 pound machine, but also skills to help young people make good judgments.  I also agree that this skill cannot be learned in a classroom and must be experienced.  I knew how I was supposed to drive in snow, but the first time I drove in it, I was not prepared.  Thankfully, I have never had an accident, but I think that the majority of accidents involving teens are due to poor judgment and lack of skill.  I believe that programs like New Driver Car Control Driving Clinic could significantly improve new drivers, thereby making the roads safer for all of us.

TEENVUE is the same concept as DriveSafe although I believe that DriveSafe was the first.  Again, this program seems to have the support of local authorities, parents, and school.  TEENVUE seems to be more advanced than DriveSafe.  With TEENVUE parents can get actual transcripts of the reports filed about their teens, a service that does not seem to be available with DriveSafe.

       Road Rage
     Picture from Dr. Driving's Site
Unfortunately, road rage has become all to frequent in our society.  I was listening to Dr. Laura on the radio the other day and "a young man who felt that his schedule was more important than the lives of everyone else on the road" had stuck and killed her friend who was standing on the sidewalk.  The sites below offer some ideas on how to combat road rage.

INNER POWER TOOLSTM BEHIND THE WHEEL
Dr. Driving'sTM Tips for Hassle-Free Driving
Though I am Dr. Driving, it is really a national symbol of all drivers. Each one of the 177 million Americans who have a driver's license have a Dr. Driving within their mind, or heart. This is their highway driving conscience that tells each of us how to be a conscientious supportive driver. Like Jimminy Cricket for all the innocent and ignorant Pinochios in the world, and like Smokey the Bear for all outdoor lovers. Dr. Driving is our symbol of highway conscience and I just happen to have discovered him in myself before others. I have studied myself as a driver for 2 decades
before I started seeing for real!!

Dr. Driving advocates safety by teaching drivers how to not succumb to road rage.  Dr. Driving believes that road rage is a result of society having learned poor driving behavior.  He feels that by teaching drivers to monitor their emotions drivers can alter their poor driving habits.  Dr. Driving seems to have lots of support from law enforcement, the media, psychologists, and others.

I agree with Dr. Driving's opinion that drivers are generally not sympathetic to the plights of other drivers.  As a result, we tend to feel that the other person is trying to take away some of our power and that makes it easy for us to get angry.  Dr. Driving suggests that driving is a moral act and requires a certain level of emotional intelligence.  I agree with him that if we think of driving as a moral act, then we will be less likely to behave in an immoral fashion.  For example, many of us do not speed out of fear of getting a ticket.  However, the moral driver does not speed, because speeding is endangers others.  Moreover, if we self witness our own will and motivations while driving we are more apt to consider the wills and motivations of other drivers.  This exercise would lead to more tolerant drivers and greatly reduce road rage.

HiStrung-Stupid Driver's Page advocates safety thorough public humiliation.  The author of the site takes picture of rude drivers and those who break traffic laws and posts them on the internet.  The site seems to have the support of some people in the community who are irritated by bad drivers.  I am not sure how effective the site is in reducing the poor driving, but the author states that the side is therapeutic for his own road rage.

Whew this report took me a long time to do!  I am glad to be finally finished.  Since it would be impossible for me to review to many more web sites, the links at the bottom of the page are other web sites that I thought were worth viewing.  Also, be sure to check out all of my classmates' reports.  I especially liked Lianne Uradomo's report.  Her layout is very organized and she did a good job explaining about each link.  I love the car bar she has at the top of her report!  I also really liked the layout of Fred Yuen's report.  Mr. Yuen did not use any graphics, but his unique use of color and tables made his report look very polished.

My advice to future generations is to spend lots of time surfing the net for links.  Although Dr. James and other students have compiled some great links, there are tons more out there!  Also, do not be afraid to experiment with format.  This is a really fun report to do and you can be really creative.

    Conclusion
I agree with Dr. Driving that driving is a moral act.  Individually everyday, we choose how we drive.  We choose to drive fast, aggressive, slow, careful, or even intoxicated.  Moral driving means that we examine why we choose to drive in a certain manner.  The why, depends on what motivates us.
There are those that argue that driving is governed by social principles, either anti-social or pro social.  From this standpoint, when we act in an anti-social manner, we are breaking the law, however, it says nothing about why we are breaking the law.  If you are guided by only the pro social aspects of driving, then you will only abide by the laws.
