This report is titled Hobbes'
Internet Timeline v4.0 by Robert
H Zakon. What the site is about is an Internet timeline dating
back from the 50's up until the 90's. It highlights many important
events, inventions, discoveries, and so fourth that make up the Internet
today. Beginning first with USSR launching the first artificial earth
satellite called Spunik and ending with "open source software comes of
age". It was last updated in December of 1998.
Although the site may
look plain, it's the quality of it that matters. There are tons of
facts that I wasn't even informed of at all. Upon researching, I've
learned how and when the internet started and about certain things that
happened along the way up until today. Plus if your bilingual, it's
even available in two other languages - both Japanese and Spanish.
Q: How do you react personally to the
Internet timeline? e.g. growth rate, origins in government - Dr.
Leon James
A: Personally,
I believe that the Internet timeline is great to have. For people
like me who knew nothing of where it even came from, I realize that there
is much more to it than people being able to communicate world wide.
Q: What does the author attribute to
the success of the internet? - Corey
Egami
A: His
timeline is referenced in many books, magazines, and web sites. Other
than that, he was involved in technologies as public-key infrastructures,
biometrics, virtual-private networks, etc. by researching, designing, programming,
and developing new capabilities.
Q: What was the most interesting date?
- Craig
Kawamura
A: Something
that I thought was "cool" happened in 1994 where it was possible to order
pizza from the Hut online.
Q: Approximately how many users are
there in the Internet today? - Valerie
Iinuma
A: It's too
controversial and inaccurate to say. It would range from 1 till about
6 billion people, but you never know because people sometimes have more
than one account.
Q: Who or what was the first search
engine? -
Hyechin
Kim
A: I believe
it was Yahoo.
Q: Why was the internet started?
- Sheri
Lieberman
A: For people
to communicate with others throughout the world.
Q: Will the Y-2K bug affect the use
of the Internet? -
Jocelyn
Manibusan
A: I'm pretty
sure the Y-2K bug will affect the internet. Whether or not it'll
be serious, that I ain't too sure of. People are still testing out
some things and say it's very possible that there will be a power shut
down as soon as it reaches January 1, 2000.
Q: What would you say are the two or
three most important events in the Internet history?
- Sean
Marrs
A: One of the most
important is of course the very first date written on the timeline.
Again it was in 1957 where Sputnik was the first satellite to launch.
This in response, formed an Advanced Research Projects Agency to establish
US in science and technology. Another would be in which Ray Tomlinson
modifies an email program. He chose the "@" sign to mean at.
In 1990, the World becomes online and was the first commercial provider
of Internet dial-up access. And one of the more recent ones is Sun
launches JAVA in 1995.
Q: What was the function of Aloha.net?
- Kyle
Michibata
A: It was
the first packet radio network developed by Norman Abrahamson.
Q: What does the timeline seem to point
towards the future?
- Leon
Mosher
A: I feel
that there will be much more businesses and jobs, and not to mention the
billions of people who will be interested in sharing their lives.
Q: Do you think that the Internet timeline
will continue to grow and expand or is it just a phase?
- Evelyn
Moss
A: I think
it will definitely expand. Looking back from the 50's and now in
the 90's, I believe that there will be much more added on to the list.
Q: Why is it inaccurate to report?
- Russ
Muramatsu
A: I just
didn't explore the report as I should have and I wasn't able to visit the
available links, so I didn't have enough information to give. Sorry!
Q: What do you see the timeline looking
like 20 years from now? - Albert
Ne
A: I have
a feeling that it will have many more dates on there.
Q: How did the Internet get to where
it is today? - Charles
Kam
A: Technology
is moving rather quickly. These days, it's much cheaper. People
feels it's easier to use the Internet and also very entertaining so there's
others out there who come up with all these programs available.
Honestly, I was not fully
prepared doing the first presentation because I did not have the chance
to explore the entire site. There were a lot of links which I unfortunately
could not view and that made it a problem for me to report on this.
At first I thought the
timeline "was just a timeline". Dr. James pointed out that it was
much more than that. He feels that it's very important and really
admires that there is such a timeline. I guess I didn't look at it
as seriously as he did, but don't get me wrong...I do believe there are
lots of dates that benefits people around the world.
There was nobody who did
the same report, however for the future generations who'll do the same
report, I suggest that you start early and examine your site. There
were abbreviations I haven't heard of therefore, I believe you should do
more research to gain better understanding of the terms. Furthermore, read
each date carefully and find extra information on them especially if there
are added links. Do visit them because it can help.
With my advice, I'm sure
you'll improve your oral and definitely be able to give tons of info for
people to be very interested in.
