INT RODUCTION
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ This project is
to customizing my own emotional spin cycle with the threefold-self
concept.À We as a human function in
three areas: (1) affective behavior (feeling), (2) cognitive behavior
(thinking), and (3) sensorimotor behavior (acting).À In report one it will define the terminology of emotion, feeling,
threefold-self, and the hierarchy of needs through a annotated bibliography,
which includes the past generation curriculum, news media, and websites and
articles.À For report two it will be my
data collection and analysis of the threefold self.À
EMOTIONS
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ Is there a
difference between emotions and feelings? Yes, but emotions deals with
physiological and the feelings deals with sensation.À Emotion is a physiological reflex and feelings, reflects our
sensation.À Emotion is a physiological
arousal that judges the levels of fear or anxiety.À It also determines if we are happy or unhappy.À An example of emotion is when we are in a
relationship our physiological arousal allows us to reflect the love and
compassion to the person.À If we are
watching a horror movie, our physiological arousal allows us to have a rapid
heart rate or heavy breathing that follows fear or anxiety.À Emotions affect the spin cycle through
others and self.À We must have emotions
to the things or people that we interact in life.À Emotions tag along with feelings in the threefold self, with
fear, love, compassion and etc.ÀÀ

for Controlling Conscious Emotions?-website articles.

ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ This site reports that emotions are
frequently unrealistic and irrational.À
Our emotions are what we express in our minds.À Usually we exaggerated the emotions, such fear, hopes, or
needs.À This article said that emotions
involve behavior, subjective feelings, and physiological responses.À It said that these three aspects are often
correlated with the other two.À Meaning,
you may (subjectively) feel very tense but not show it overtly (behaviorally)
and not respond internally (physiologically).À
Example: a person can feel quite relaxed but have an upset stomach or
low back pain and appear to others, as either laid back or very nervous.À This is related to the emotional spin cycle
when our emotions are put into feeling and we express those feelings.
http://members.tripod.com/emotioncube/index.html

ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ This site is another way to look
at emotion, through a cube.À The emotion
cube is based on the assumption cognitive development.À At this site you will find the general
discussion of what emotion is the purpose and function of emotion, emotion and
the brain, emotional dynamics, and etc.À This relates
back to the emotional spin cycle when we have these emotion and learn how to
cognitively put it in our situation, such as rage, depression, satisfaction,
and passion.À ÀÀÀ
Citation: ?For
Arab Americans, a Familiar Backlash?-Washington Post
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A20953-2001sept12.html
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ In this article it talked about
the emotion of the American towards Arab Americans or Muslim looking
people.À These people expressed their
emotion with languages, graffiti and words.À
For example: ?it is frustrating,? said Abdul Raouf of the center.À ?We are citizens of this country, and we
share in the sorrow and sadness.?À
Another example of expressing emotion is ?I?m not saying its okay,? he
began.À ?But there?s a reason these
people are angry.À A reason why they
bombed America.À It?s because Israel
oppresses the Palestinian people and America tries to cover it up.À Nobody listen to these people.À They don?t have a voice.À So they act out of their frustrations.?À This is one example of one persons? emotion
of why the terrorist bombed America.À
Last example is when a woman spray-painted the word ?murders? on the
wall of the King Fahad Mosque in Culver City, California.À The director of the mosque did not pressed charges
because he felt that this is how this woman was overcome with her
emotions.À This is related to the
emotional spin cycle of how the people were acting out on the rage towards the
Arab American.À They didn?t care if they
have nothing to do with it they just took out their frustration on the Arab
American.À They were displaying the
negative red zone.À
Citation: ?The Definition of Traffic Psychology? Generation
Curriculum Sandra Scarbrough 459f96
http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/leonj/459f96/scarbrou/report1.html
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ In this report she believes that traffic
psychology deals with emotions.À When we
are driving our emotion tends to control our behavior.À Therefore, if we cannot control our behavior
we will bring negative energy out on the road.À
One of her statement is:? I believe the impatience and hostility some
drivers? feel is due to the fact that they are frustrated.À The frustration is caused by the lack of
control of their emotions felt while driving.À
What many of these drivers don?t understand is that there negative
attitude usually rubs off on the other drivers, thus making the highway
hostile.À This is related to the
emotional spin cycle in the negative blue zone, where the feeling and the
thinking of the driver affect the way they are driving.À
Citation:
?Self-conscious emotions?-magazine article (Gale Encyclopedia of Psychology)
http://www.findarticles.com/cf_dls/g2699/0006/2699000612/print.jhtml
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ In
this article it explains the concept of self-conscious emotion.À According to the article, self-conscious
emotions is living up to one?s own internalized set of standards of failing to
live up to them is the basis of complex emotions.À Self-conscious emotions are guilt, pride, shame, and hubris and
in order to feel these emotions an individual must have the sense of self as
well as a set of standards.À It is said
that self-conscious emotions are difficult to study due to the fact that we
don?t know what elicit these emotions.À
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ Cognitive
processes are likely to be the elicitors of the emotions, because if people
think about the emotions maybe the emotion will display in a behavior.À Self-conscious emotions depend on the
development of a number of cognitive skills.À
First, an individual must absorb a set of standards, rules, and
goals.À Second, they must have a sense
of self. Last, they must be able to evaluate the self with regard to those
standards, rules, and goals and then make a determination of success or
failure.À That is where emotional spin
cycle is related, how we think is how we behave in a situation.ÀÀ
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ In
shame and guilt, it is said that an individual will hide, disappear, or die,
which these are negative emotions displays.À
Guilt is produced when an individual evaluates his or her behavior as a
failure, but focuses on the specific features of the self that led to the
failure.À Guilt is associated with a
corrective action that the individual can take to repair the failure and
prevent it from happening again.À This
is the negative blue zone of the emotional spin cycle that we experience these
feeling.
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ The
positive emotion is called the hubris and pride.À Hubris is defined as exaggerated pride or self-confidence.À Hubris is the emotion that builds up success
with one?s standards, rules, and goals.À
Having the positive emotions a person would feel joy at the things they
do and the people they are with.ÀÀ
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ With
shyness and embarrassment, this emotion makes an individual express fear and
discomfort.À This article said the
shyness and fear is very much related.À
They are related in how we act in the social world.À When we express shyness we are showing fear,
for example speaking in front of a group (presentation).
FEELINGS
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ Feelings are
behaviors with sensation feelings such as pain.À If we are hurt and have a cut, we can feel the pain as a tingling
feeling.À For those who get shots from
the doctors we can feel the needle going into our skin.À But when we say we feel depressed or feel
that we are in love the sensation to depressed is feeling lonely, feeling
nothing, and etc.À When we are to
describe the feeling of love, we would say words like, giddy, feels like you?re
floating on air.À But we really don?t
know what the feeling of floating is.À
Feelings are just words to describe the moment or the situation.À As it was said in emotions, feelings affect
the spin cycle in others and self.À
Feelings are one of the components in the spin cycle.À
Citation: ?The
Material Basis of Feelings?-magazine article (Brain and Mind Magazine)
http://www.epub.org.br/cm/n12/opiniao/sentimentos_i/html
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ This Website
article explains the brain function affect our feelings and emotions.À According to this article there are
possibilities to decrease the feelings.À
The article have an example when you are anxious and feel anger your
doctor would prescribe you ansiolitic to control the feelings.À When you are feeling depressed your doctor
would prescribe an antidepressant in order to eliminate the negative
behavior.À Therefore chemical substance
can control your feelings.À In our brain
there is a nervous system, which is called the neuron; it affects our feelings
toward love/compassion and fear/anxiety.À
In our limbic system there is a thing that is called the amydala, which
is a motivator towards our feelings.À It
is said that our brain is a compound of numerous synaptic.À It is like electrical static that stimulate
or feelings whether positive or negative.ÀÀ
This article is related to the emotional spin cycle through a better
understanding the feelings that produce in our brain.À There is a chemical reaction and affect the feeling and allows us
to behave in a certain way.

ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ This Website
is plainly for words that are use for expressing feelings.À There are positive feelings and negative
feelings.À For each feeling there are
levels of feelings; intense, strong, moderate, and mild feelings.À Some of the examples of positive and
negative feelings are:
Positive FeelingsÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ Negative
Feelings
Intense- loved, lustful, empathy, zealousÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ Intense- hates,
anger, cynical, shock
Strong- infatuated, happy, joyful, braveÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ Strong- sad,
depressed, fatigue, bitter
Moderate- patient, glad, peaceful, fondÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ Moderate- envious, confused, worried,
suspicious
Mild- friendly, relaxed, comfortable, untroubledÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ Mild- gloomy, unpopular,
bashful, sullen
This is related to the emotional spin cycle through words of
feelings, these words helps us to express the negative and the positive of the
4 zones in the cycle.

zones.À These are the things that you
can do to reduce stress, rage and etc.
Citation: ?Music and Driving?-Generation Curriculum 12 (Terence
Nakamatsu 459f98)
http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/459f98/nakamatsu/report1nakamatsu.html
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ This
generation curriculum is a good example for feelings.À What he is saying is that while driving and listening to music it
won?t affect your driving behavior, because it all depends on the music
tempo.À If you listen to music you can
either feel happy or relaxed.À Music is
one thing that can help you reduces your stress and feel relaxed, but it all
depends on the music you listen to you and what you think that will help you to
relax.À This is a good example of the
emotional spin cycle of both positive and negative to self.À You can find music to help you relax think
clearly of what you are doing at the moment of time.ÀÀÀ
THREEFOLD SELF
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ The threefold
self is a three-part function that works together in habits of feelings, habits
of thinking, and habits of acting.À It
has two arenas, the self and the other and both arenas have a positive and
negative behavior.À The other is also
known as the red zone and the self is known as the blue zone.À Figure 1 shows the four zones in a circle.À

Zone one and four refers to the others and zone two and three
refers to the self.À Zone one is the
negative red zone, which is called the rage.À
Zone four is the positive red zone, which is called the zeal or
compassion.À Zone two is the negative
blue zone, which is called the depression to self and zone three is the
positive blue zone, called the mastery or self-confidence.À Each of the zones has three components, (1)
feeling, (2) thinking, and (3) doing.À
Therefore there are 12 settings in the emotional spin cycle, which we as
a human goes through.À For a detailed
understanding of each setting for each zone you can go into Dr.
Leon James report instructions.À

Correspondences?-Generation Curriculum (Boyer 499s2001)
http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/499s2001/boyer/worcester1a.htm
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ In this
generation curriculum, she explains that our physiological movements also work
as the threefold self.À She use the lips
of the a person that express the thoughts, feelings and doing.À This is what she wrote: ?To the lips is
assigned the threefold duty of expressing the thoughts and feelings to the
sight by means of their motions and changes of form; or modifying and
articulation the voice, and thus communicating the activities of the mind to
the ear; and of receiving and drawing in the food by which the body is nourished.?

http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/459ss97/among/report1.html
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ In the generation
curriculum it allows us to understand the threefold self in how to drive
safely.À She expressed the affective,
cognitive and the sensorimotor of how to be aware of what you are doing.À By recording your feelings and say it out
loud you will be able to be aware and know what you are doing, feeling and
thinking at that moment.À
HIERARCHY OF MOTIVES
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ Abraham Maslow
developed the hierarchy of motives, which consist of a five level of
needs.À Once a person desire is
satisfied another pops up in place.À The
five levels are (1) physiological needs, (2) safety needs, (3) love and
belonging needs, (4) esteem needs, and (5) self-actualization needs.À The physiological needs are the bottom of
the triangle and the basic in human needs and self-actualization needs are the
top of the triangle, which majority of the people cannot reach.À Figure 2 is Maslow?s hierarchy of motives
(needs).
In the physiological needs it is the biological necessities such
as food, water, and oxygen.À These needs
are the strongest because a person would die if they did not have the basic
needs in life.À For the safety needs it
is consider as the shelter, this is where we need physical security,
dependence, stability, structure, and order in life.À This will be the need to have a job and to have the money to take
care of ones? physiological needs.À The
third need is called the love and belongingness, which is also called the
companionship. In this need, we would find love, affection, belonging to a
family or group, and friendship.À This
would be having a special someone to spend the rest of your life with.À Able to share the love and pain that is
happening in life.À The fourth need is
called the esteem need, also known as the feeling component.À This is where we can see the self-esteem and
the esteem from others.À This allows us
the need to feel valuable, to have self-respect and the respect of others.À If the person does not fulfill these needs,
they will feel inferior, weak, helpless, and worthless.À For self-esteem you can find achievement,
confidence, mastery, and strength.À For
esteem from others you will find recognition, appreciation, attention, status
and reputation.À These are the things
that you will want to achieve from others so you call achieve self-esteem for
yourself.À Once you have achieve this
you can get into the last level and the highest, which majority of the people
could not reach, the self-actualization needs.À
The self-actualization needs are also called the creativity.À At this level, you will feel that you can do
anything you want to do.À For this needs
you will find things like living up to the potential, accepting the strength
and limitation, accepting other people for whom and what they are, being
spontaneous, and acting independently and creativity.À The hierarchy of needs also affect the threefold self through the
esteem needs, and love and belonging needs.À
These two needs are connected to the feelings aspect of the threefold
self.ÀÀÀÀÀ

ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ This
generation curriculum is an example of the hierarchy of needs.À Shane Cobbs said that ?Traffic Psychology
can be defined as a tool, which through subjective analysis, function to

observance, identification and modification.? With traffic psychology it is
like the hierarchy of needs, in order to become a good driver you must take it

hierarchy, briefly goes over the description of each needs and it have several
examples of the hierarchy need.À For
example: eating dinner is both physiological and social.À The hierarchy does not exist by itself, but
is affected by the situation and the general culture.À Satisfaction is relative.À

ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ In this

it affects our societies.À It also
briefly explains how people misinterpret the meaning of self-actualization.À For example: Many people confuse
self-actualization, many psychologist believe that most people who have reached
the highest level of happiness are known beyond their circle of family and
friends.

ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ In this
magazine article this briefly discussed Maslow?s history, on human
motivation.À Then it explains what his
hierarchy of needs consists of.À Later
it stated that Maslow?s views in humanistic psychology.À The author said that Maslow rejected the
idea that human behavior was determine by childhood events or conditioning and
believed that the goal of psychotherapy was to remove the obstacles that
prevented clients from self-actualizing.À
Last it had a list of Maslow?s publications.À
ÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀÀ In
conclusion we behave according to the emotional spin cycle, where we feel, act,
and think about the things that are happening around us.À We may experience negative and positive
behavior at times but we must be aware of our behavior in the things that we
are doing.À For a better understanding
in our self and others we observe our feeling, thoughts and doing at the moment
of times.À
