The report begins with an analogy of the internet being a ripple affect. This is a great way of visualizing how the internet spreads. As a stone drops into the water, that being each netizen, the ripples are caused, that being the effect of all those who interact with the internet. This made a lot of sense to me! It was helpfull to come across particular links that Candice made reference to. She enabled the reader to follow along with her points nicely.
In the second division of her report named "Phenonmenal Growth", Candice touches on a variety of search engines available to the netizen. Again the viewer is able to find clickable links to what she is talking about. It is possible to reach Yahoo, a particular internet search engine. Her report develops and shows me creativity and inspiration to work harder on my own work. A comment was made that first impressions are lasting impressions. This is what a home page can do for an individual. You can either attract or not attract people with your work, it sounds more interesting to pursue attracting people! I would have to say that this part of her report is quit energetic and uplifting to a junior person as myself.
Candice concludes this report with a look at "What Makes Us Unique?". Again she touches on her focus of how the internet has a rippling affect, she pulls together her ideas nicely and makes her points clear. Her ideas I find to be similar to my own. The Generational Curriculum is made up of a group of people with common goals. We all want to learn to further our education of the internet and grow together as a group. We work together as a group to obtain our goals for the semester. It is a wonderful feeling to learn and achieve new things. This whole class is often overwhelming to me, I suppose I suffer from technophobia, or could it be procrastination? I feel it may be a little of both. Yet once I get things done, I feel so proud of what I am able to achieve. We really are fortunate in gaining this type of education, because the internet is becoming an emense part of life around the globe we live on. Knowing how to manuver it will be important to our future ventures.
After reviewing Jenica Guerra's summary's of Dr. James Home page links, I was able to refresh myself with the information that I too have reviewed recently. It was comforting to find that she too felt overwhelmed at times when making the journey through the links. It can be consuming, yet very informative and helpful to the new generational student.
History of the Generational Curriculum
OH MY GOODNESS, I should have read this article a LONG time ago! Wow, I feel so motivated and insightfull. I can highly relate to all that is going on here. The process of learning is discussed in this article by Dr. James. Yes, we did go over several of these points in class discussions such as the cognitive, sensorimotor and affective areas and their affects on learning. But reading this article just opens your eyes to what is going on here!
The three divisions of learning (cognitive, affective and sensorimotor) all have an affect on the three "phases" of learning. Phase one concentrates on the "gaining of information", while phase two focuses on becoming an independent student and finally reaching phase three can show the student to be a strong leader. I know that we went over all of this in class, yet the information has just taken on a whole new meaning to me, or maybe I only now understand what was being said then.
This article is a great motivator and method of understanding the course that I am involved with. I only wish that I read it earlier, I understand my role. Unfortunately it is already half way through the semester, and only now am I finding my way out of "phase one".... YIKES! Learning is what this course is all about. It is necessary to apply and expand your knowledge and that is what Dr. James is emphasizing to the Generational Curriculum.
The key is to get on the computer and force yourself to understand what you are basically supposed to do. I spent endless hours doing things on the computer. I have never spent so much time in the computer labs in my life! After a while, I got the basic idea of what I am doing. The feeling of frustration slowly went away. Leslie Agenal's home page looks great! After reading through the assigned links, I feel so motivated, honestly! It feels great to be a part of this cyber community. Yet, what feels even better is knowing that I am able to implement a style of learning that I have not been able to in the past.
At this point Dr. James introduces the unexpossed person to the working world of the internet. What is going on, what's the big deal? Well there certainly is a wealth of activity going on here! We know, but THEY don't. But just a few months ago, we too were THEY.
Again the learning aspects are touched on by Dr. James. This pit stop is another area to load up on energy to further boost yourself ahead into broadening your internet horizons. You are encouraged to have proper netiquete and become aware of how to make your home on the internet more interesting to other netizens.
A virtual book is just as it sounds, to me. Looking at this site as a virtual book. This would be where a reader would be able to find a wealth of information on a particular subject matter, or simply to find entertainment. Just as we look to paper back literature for information, so too can we venture to the internet for similar experiences. The wev provides entertainment, research capabilities, historical information and so much more. Just as we find in books, we can find on the internet. A virtual book not necessarily being of physical pages that our fingers can control, yet containing the same information only in cyber space. Some perks of having virtual books would be that we don't have to dust them off periodically, and they don't grow mildew.
Not knowing where to go for the information you are seeking is probably one of the biggest problems a person could encounter when navigating for items of interest on the web. If the virtual book is written clearly along with containing links that are referenced, there should be an ease for comprehension of the netizen.
The site that Scott is reviewing is of great interest to me. I made a point to explore the site he was discussing so that I would be able to better follow his report. I love the convenience of his links, and the yellow color looks great against the grey background. Jeff Glover put together an amusing while informative site on making the most of your homepage. Scott reviews the topic of having a "sucky" homepage and covers some of Glover's ideas of what's good and bad for homepages.
I found myself noding in agreement with much of what Scott had to say in the rest of his report. He too feels that Cyberpsychology is a time consuming course, yet with practice one can obtain skills that will be emensly benefitial to their future. Learning, really learning is what this class is all about, being able to expand your knowledge, experience on top of experience. I am also trying to take his advice and look at html as fun! I haven't been able to drill that into my head just yet, but I think it's sinking in. The time necessary for the class is intense, yet you truely do learn so much that you will be valued for in future career situations.
Scott wrote of similar experiences as I have already mentioned. It is rewarding or should I say comforting to know that he went through similar anxieties in completeing assignments for this class. I am glad that Dr. James assigns us to read particular sites, there is just so much out there it is nice to have some direction to finding something meaningful.
At first glance Kaihilei caught my eye by her generous offerning of letting me know what her mistakes were, so I wondered... could her clues be of help to me? She goes on to comment on Jeff Glover's site as did Scott. I have to agree with her that his site was easy to use. Next, she discusses Dr. James article on the architecture of homepage design with an emphasis of the affective, cognitve and sensorimotor aspects of the netizen. The next topic of interest dealt with having the incorporation of style and information in the homepage. The page needs to look good to keep the attention of the visitor while timing is also important. If it takes too long to download the desired site, the viewer may stop the transfer, I myself have don this many a time!
I laughed when Kaihilei wrote: Then, one day, everything just came to me at one time. I couldn't believe it, but everything was making sense. I understood how to do it! I can't tell you if it was persistance on my part, or some kind of intervention from a higher power that took pity on my awful display of incompetence, but everything was making wonderful sense. I think I am close to this generalization, yet not quit there yet!
I have to say that I agree with some of the comments that Scott and Kaihilei made about the class work. Scott mentioned possibly having class for the entire session in the lab. I completed the same ICS course that he mentioned taking. It was nice because questions were answered easily, since the computer was right in front of you. As for the lab monitors, I have not dealt with them much due to I do my work straight from home. It would be nice if designated times were available, almost like a tutor for Dr. James class.
I have to say that reading reports of other people makes me motivated to work at improving my own site, which at this time is not very attractive. The time involvement automatically scares me off. Oh well, it's only time and this truely is an important skill to have under my belt. I will be graduating in December and I hope to take this information with me into my new career, whatever that may be?? I guess this is why I don't want to copy too much from other people. I know this is part of the learning, yet I feel like I loose out when I copy something from somebody else!?
The information that has been created by the past seven generations
is so emense. Figuring out how to maintain it is unfortunately
beyond me. On the other hand one of my classmates,
Quincy Tan has an idea that he will be further developing in
the Spring semester of 1998. I wish you luck Quincy!!!
My advice to any new generation would be to try your best not to procrastinate in this class! You put things off because you may not feel capable, but you are!!! So just kick yourself to get going. Once you get behind, it can be difficult to catch up. It is not that the work is difficult, its that you convince yourself that you can't keep up.
The funny thing about this class is that once you do get going on the learning adventure, you just don't want to stop. My eyes give out on me before by mind tires of working on these assignments. It really does get to be fun once you take care of all the dirty work. Dirty work being the learning of tags and knowing where to find things and how to pull it all together!
As for Dr. James, the best recommendation that I believe I can share with you is a word of encouragement to conduct the entire class length in the lab. I understand that it is probably difficult to schedule, yet if class were to be structured in this way, I feel that students would be able to grasp a better hold of what you are trying to share with them.
