Getting to know the Generational Curriculum

A look at some of the past students understanding of the GC.

Yvette Aqui's report 4

Yvette starts out with a diagram or map of the GC to show how it is organized. She states that the GC is "A Naturally Expanding Phenomenon" in that it grows with every semester of students. She also talks about how the GC is considered to bring students together through work. We all work as one to help it grow. I tend to agree with her that the GC is going to keep growing and it is a garden of knowledge that can be harvested by every student that wishes to. We all are here helping it grow.

Conrad Moreno's report 4

He feels that the GC is a very well organized site that meets several criteria for a well designed Web site. 1)Regularity which is defined by the shared theme of each web page dealing with the topic of psychology. 2)There is a consistent structure within the entire web site. 3)As a result of this consistency comes a predictability so that the reader can follow the cyber-psychology path easier. 4)Elegant Navigation is accomplished in this site by the set method in which each page offers the option of returning to the main home page. The visitor always know where they are by the standard organization of regressive links. 5)Cohesive organization. 6)Supports user-tasks. and 7)Easy to perceive tasks (no clutter). He also feels that being able to look at the mistakes of the generations before him is beneficial to him. I tend to agree because we should all learn from our mistakes and others as well.

I have also looked at the Generational Curriculum file on the Home Pages of some of the G6 459 students. I feel that they have done a good job of summarizing the 18 links on Dr. James's Home Page. Personally if I had known about these pages it probably would have saved me a lot of time. Instead of reading all the links I would have read all these summaries instead. But what I came up with when I did this assignment was fairly close to what they have done there.

History look on the Generational Curriculum

A look at the past.

History look on the Generational Curriculum

The Generational Curriculum started out in the 1970s as student papers that were collected and called the Daily Round Archives or DRA for short, which were referenced by following generation students. Uploading to the World Wide Web began in 1992 and is still in progress. The reports were assignments that were directed by Dr. Leon James. They all have the same basic structure but each students work and outlook on the subjects were different.

I think that this Generational Curriculum is rich in information and I understand that in order to find things easier and to be compatible with diverse servers that there must be a basic format. What strikes me the most is the fact that students in the beginning had to write this stuff down and have their papers bound for future reference. I am glad that it is now on the Web so that it is much easier for me than I imagine it was for previous students.

It is gratifying to know that something that I do in this life will carry on and that people will be looking at it. I just hope that I do a good enough job that it looks good. I am sure I am now the only one who feels this way. How do you feel about it?

Virtual Book

My perspective about the Web.

Virtual Book

This article deals with different perspectives about the World Wide Web and cyber-homes called Home Pages. The author in this case Dr. James was explaining to his friend about the Web and why he spends so much time on it. The concept of a cyber home away from home didn't really click with his friend. I can understand his friend's point of view. He felt that everything on the Internet was just files and data transfers. At this point Dr. James realizes that there are two ways of looking at the Internet, an external view that of data and marketing and other business aspects and an internal view. This internal view is that of the active Net user. A person that enjoys the web and works constantly to make his or her pages as good as they can get and then some.

I feel that this upkeeping of web pages is just an assignment. My perspective has changed a bit because when I first learned how to change background colors and pictures I spent a few hours just fooling around with them. Internet use is contagious on a subconscious level. To infer a correlation "Once you pop you can't stop". The Virtual Book is what you are reading now but it is more than just a book because it is adaptive and changing as long as the author is. Some of the problems navigating around in this environment range from time of down loading to being read. This place on the Web is like a Gigantic Library that your work and Home Page are in and it is a waste if you do a lot of work and no one is there to appreciate it. Other problems deal with being compatible with other Web browsers since all of them are not exactly the same when reading files. If you don't take this into account then some of the things that you do won't come out as good as you wish them to. Examples of this are in color schemes and or fonts.

Roseanne Ancog's report 2

She has done a great job in designing this page. In the introduction she talks about being unsure that she could create a Web Page as good as the previous generations. I feel the same way. She has overcome this fear and has given some pointers about creating a good Web Page. There is a list of things that make pages "sucky" but she also says that any page is good if you think so. The main concern was appearance and then time of uploading. A good tip was not to take to much space with pictures. Limit and choose the pictures you want to post up on your pages so that the uploading time doesn't take too long. Another option is to put your pictures lower on the page so that while it is loading the words will be up already for people to read. This way very little time is spent waiting for pictures to come up at the beginning of the pages. This report makes me think of my own efforts to make my pages appealing to the eye. Glen Acietro's report 2

Glen starts off the same as everyone here taking this kind of class as a beginner. He then travels upward toward computer literacy. He has fully embraced computers into his life as an everyday thing. Some of you reading this may feel the same way and others can still stand to be away from a computer a few days. I am still one of these people. I use computers often but don't type on them everyday. By computers I mean desktop or notebook ones because computers are an everyday thing if you think about it. Your car has a computer and so do all the traffic lights. You can't get away even if you wanted to. Well back to his page, he talks about the construction of Web Pages and the simple do's and don'ts. It was good to read that others have had trouble and much anxiety in this class aside of myself. I feel that he has done a good job at learning how to use the Net and to create Web Pages. I am slowly following in his and every other previous GC student.

Mining the Generational Curriculum

Online resources available to us.

The Generational Curriculum is a gigantic storage of information and it is still growing. We as users of the GC are mining it for information be it for class or for general knowledge. It can be mined even further if you know where to look. I suggest that you take a tour of the GC so that you know more about where things are. Another way to know more about the GC is to look at a map of it. The map if you looked at it was done by Conrad Moreno. These are some suggestions on how to mine the GC for information. Some of my classmates would disagree about using a tour because they like the freedom of choosing where to go. This was just a suggestion if you want a general overview of the GC.

The GC as a cultural resource is a possibility because the on-line culture is different from the cultures we were born in. There are different groups of people that go on-line for different things and our thing is the GC. This resource that we all share is still growing and a few problems for navigating may arise. Problems such as repetitiveness because we all are building up on the generations before us we still cover many of the same topics. The new generations may get bored. Navigation shouldn't be that much of a problem compared to deciding what to look at. There is going to be such a wide selection that the generations to come won't even be able to see them all. Keep trying though. It is a wierd feeling when you are almost finnished and look back at how insecure you were. It is a gratifying experience.

World Information Bank

Why didn't it work?

In order to talk about something one must have a brief knowledge about it. Please click here for a brief intro and then click on the back button to return here. I feel that the main problem was getting people involved with the site. It was a good idea but it had to have more coverage on the main stream if it is to get recognition from people around the globe instead of just that one section of a class here at Manoa. I feel that a solution for this would be to have it logged on as a newsgroup because there are a lot of people that look into these groups. Another possible solution would be to advertise that it exists on venues such as the UH newspaper the Kaleo and UH Web Sites. This could even get people to come here to this college if it were connected to the main UH Home Page so that potential students can see what kind of topics we cover here to spark "higher learning".

Conclusion and Recommendations

I would like to bring your attention to a very well done page by my classmate Quincy, Tan. I feel that he has done exceptional work in this class and I will admit I am a bit jealous because his page is done so majestically compared to my own. He has great input and actually was able to come up with a possible solution for the navigation problem through the Daily Round Archive. He has designed a tree mapping system which will help people to navigate through the archive with knowing where they have been and exactly where they are. Here take a look. I am sure that this, if implemented and tested, could be beneficial for future generation students. I myself could not come up with anything even close to a solution.

Another page that is a must to look at is from Alfred Basioa. He has some interesting thing in his report1 including a top ten list of things to do if you want to really do well in this class. Trust me he speaks from experience and I am sure that the other members of the class will agree with most if not all of his suggestions. He and I have some of the same ideas about why the WIB failed and suggest similar things.
