Phobias
Ryan describe a search engine as an online librarian who tells you where the information is and not only that, it will retrieve the information for you with just a click of a button. He said that to use search engine, one does not have to have computer knowledge because it is made to be self explanatory which means user friendly. He used three different types of search engines, they were Infoseek, Excite, and Magellan. He found out that different seach engine have different ways of catagorizing informations. Some are very helpful and some are not, it all depends on the user to decide. In the beginning, one of his problem was that there were many hits with irrelevant information on his topics. To correct this problem, he used Boolean constrictor to minimize his search. He can use the Boolean constrictor to narrow down his topic by only finding sites with the exact words he type in by just adding in "and" or "+ (plus)". He also learned to use a"- (minus)" to leave out certain words that will exclude certain topics. For instant, typing in free diving -sky -scuba -pool -olympic
will narrow your search down to free diving except for sky diving, scuba diving, pool diving or olympic diving. Out of all the search engines he used, he like Excite the best.
In the beginning, I didn't know how to use Boolean constrictor to narrow down my topics. Just like Ryan, I found out that, many hits on a topic does not mean that they were relevant to what I am looking for. They may be far from what I was looking for. It gets frustrating if I can't find what I want because I was not specific enough. I found out later on that on certain search engine, if I just type in the words love relationship, it would automatically search for love or relationship. That was why, I was having so many hits with little result of what I want. That was why I learned to put an and to narrow down to the specific. In the light of my experiences with search engines, it's very important to add Boolean constrictor to narrow down to specific. And if you don't want to waste time with unnecessary work, be as specific as you can be. The computer is just following the user's command.
I did not use Magellan so, I did not try to use the Boolean constrictor + (plus). Although I found out the Boolean and works the same way. Sometimes my problem would be getting down to the specific because I don't really know what I want, so a lot of my topics are more general. Therefore, many times my hits are really large. When I scroll down the hits and most of the topics does not interest me, I would add Boolean to see if my searches would change. Sometimes, it does and it's usually when I added the Boolean and. By doing this, it usually lessen the amount of hits and it's easier to search for something interesting. Therefore, I found out that using Boolean does help a lot in constricting the hits to be more specific. Shane suggested that one should read about tips on how to use the Boolean constrictors before they even begin the search. Most search engines should have this function. If I read about the different function on search engines before I started, it would have made my searches much more easier and faster.
Jami described the web engine as a library system but it contains a whole lot more information that can be readily assessable. What a search engine is, it is made up of several database that have been created together to make up a search engine.
Her first search on a search engine ended in frustration. She couldn't get into the net search and the computer would pop up with an error message. She tried quitting and restarting it with no success. She finally quit competely and tried again at another location. Finally, she got into a search engine and found cyber-community. The only thing was that she was unhappy that it takes really long to get into net search. And another thing she really hates is that waiting around for pages to be loaded. Her answer is to click the stop button and continue to another site. Yes, I too, have found some sites that takes a really long time to load because of the picture content. I can't wait all day so I move on to other more quicker search. It gets irritating waiting around for something to be loaded and you just sit there with nothing to do. She also found some other problem with using search engines. Sometimes you will find that certains hits are irrelevant to your search, therefore, she suggest that you should read the search engine instruction before you begin searching. I think she is right, sometimes, you must read the helpful instruction to narrow down broad topics and leave out unrelated topic. This will save a lot of time and won't leave you in frustration with irrelevant hits.
What I learned is that using different search engine will produce different search results. For example, When I used the search engine Infoseek, it gave me so many sites from it's database that some were irrelevant to what I was searching for. Each hit shows a percentage of relevancy to my topic and related sites to that page. The higher the percentage, the higher the match to the topic. But, I found out that, that's not always the case. Sometimes the ones that match the topic the least are the very ones that I was looking for. But nobody has time to search through thousands of sites so the best thing is to make the search as narrow or as specific as possible. By doing this, you will get the least and relevant amount of hits.
When I used the search engine Yahoo, I had an easier time finding my topic because a lot of my topic are general, not specific. Yahoo is a great search engine to use if your topic is general. It contains catagories and subcatagories where you can search from general to specific. I really like this search engine.
What I suggest for the next generation is not to make the same mistake I did. I did not read search engine instruction and HELP before I start using the search engine for the first time. Even though this is not the first time you've used search engine, it's very helpful to read the tips to make your topic search easier. Another thing is, don't procrastinate! Give yourselve time to input data and revise what you have done. There are always room for improvement. Good luck!!

First Search on Phobias using Infoseek

1. Day, Date and Place

Very tired because I had just finished work and I really want to go home and relax. 3. a) Search engine??
b) Number of times used?
c) Like or dislike?a) Infoseek
b) This is the first time I am using Infoseek.
c) I like it because it was easy to use. Right when I opened Infoseek, I immediately saw a bracket that indicate search topic, which is where I typed in my search topic. It took a couple of seconds for another screen to appear and this contained information that I was looking for. If there are too many hits, you can scroll down to the bottom where there is another bracket that indicate new search or search these results. If you add another word here, you can search this word with the original word or statement you typed in.4. a) Search statement used. Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?a) I typed in Phobias because I know a lot of people who have phobias and I always wonder why. I guess I also have a small little phobia of my own and I wanted to find out more.
b) No it does not contain Boolean constrictor because I wanted to see the general overall of phobias instead of just one type of phobias.
c) Yes, it was my first response.5. # of expected hits
I was expecting around 10,000 because I thought there were many different types of phobias out there and I thought a lot of people would write about it. 6. # of actual hits
The number of actual hits were only about 6, 522. 7. Reaction to 5/6
My reactions was that I expected a lot more hits because the topic was so broad. There are so many different types of phobias, I thought that I was underestimating my guess. Maybe, I wasn't specific enough so Infoseek did not give me much results. 8. Evaluation of hits
Well, at first I mainly opened the ones that have interesting topics. I didn't really look at the percentage that was rated for each sites regarding their compatability to my search. The sites that were listed range from anxieties to phobias. It does seems that my search was really broad and it just doesn't deal with just phobias. 9. a) Did mood influence searched?
b) Did topic influence search?
c)Used search engine instructions or HELP?a) I think it did, I just wanted to go home so I wanted to leave as soon as I can. Instead of making my search more specific,to narrow down the seaches. I just stopped at the topic of Phobias and did not type in anything else to add to the search.
b) Yes, there are so many different types of phobias that I wanted to see if there are any interesting ones that I have not heard of before. That is why I made a more general search instead of a specific search.
c) No, this is the part that I forgot to do, looking at HELP documents. I bet it would have helped or given me ideas on how to expand my search.10.

Second search on Phobias using Yahoo

1. Day, Date and Place
Thursday, November 13, 1997 at Keller Mac Lab 2. Mood or affective state
Very very tired because I didn't get enough sleep last night and I just woke up from a half an hour nap. I've got a real bad headache. 3. a)Search engine??
b)Number of times used?
c)Like or dislike?a)Yahoo
b) This is also my first time using this search engine.
c) It was very different from the search engine Infoseek. It catagorized each subject into catagories. It also listed the numbers of sites found that match the word that I typed in. Therefore, this goes one step ahead. It's much more organize and easier to choose on one subject area, instead of scrolling down to look for a subject that is not of interest to me. It saves me a lot of time. I like this very much.4. a) Search statement used? Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?a)Phobias,to match the same topic on the first search.
b) No, it does not contain Boolean. To match the same topic on the first search.
c)Yes, it was first response.5. # of expected hits
I expected about 2,000 hits from this site. 6. # of actual hits
Yahoo found three catagories and 45 matching sites. 7. Reaction to 5/6
My reaction was that it's hard to figure out if I am close or far off from my estimation. Although I think I have overestimated. It's hard to tell how many hits there are in each catagories unless, I go through every one of them. 8. Evaluation of hits
I found out that if I click on the catagories given, it would show a list of sites within that catagory only. It would not show anything else that does not match that catagory. It is very useful if you are just
searching for that specific catagory. 9. a) Did mood influence search?
b) Did topic influence search?
c) Used search engine instructions or HELP?a) Yes, my headache was getting worse, therefore, it prevented me from searching phobias in detail.
b) With my headache getting worse, I don't think I would have gone on further, even if I found something interesting.
c) Again, no, I did not used the instruction or HELP, even though I saw it on the screen.10.

b)Number of times used?
c)Like or dislike?a)Infoseekb)This is the third time that I am using this search engine.
c)I think it's a good search engine if you know before hand what you are looking for. It gets really tiring when you have to scroll down on pages and pages of sites just to find something interesting. I for one got tired of doing it. 4. a) Search statment used. Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?a) falling in love>
b) I don't think I used Boolean in this phrase. I assume falling in love is together unless the word "in" would be a Boolean.
c) Yes, this was first response.5. # of expected hits
Since this is a very interesting subject, I assume that the hits would be quite large. I would guess in the range of 1,000,000. 6. # of actual hits
13,623,273 7. Reaction to 5/6
Wow, I thought that one million were more than enough hits to start off with. I guess I was wrong. 8. Evaluation of hits
Although there were over thirteen million hits, I don't think that I could see all thirteen million. It's good to have a lot of hits on one topic so you can choose what you want to read and what you don't want. But, too many hits take up unnecessary time in finding something you like. There were a lot of songs and poems that I did not care to look at. I think it would be easier if I just narrow it down to the specific. Therefore, it's best to know what you want to
search for, ahead of time. 9. a) Did mood influence search?
b) Did topic influence search?
c) Used search engine instructions or HELP?a) In a way, it did. I was not in the mood of searching. I couldn't think of anything to search for and I didn't know what phrase or word to put. I didn't even know if I should use Boolean or not. I was quite confuse.
b) The topic was falling in love. Since I wasn't in the mood of searching and I couldn't think of anything to type in so I finally just typed in falling in love.
c) No, it did not use search engine instruction or HELP.10.

c)I like how this search engine is set up but I didn't like my search.4. a) Search statment used. Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?a) falling in love
b) No, I don't think so. Yes, if "in" is a Boolean.
c) Yes, it was first response.5. # of expected hits
Since this is by catagories, I would say about five catagories and more than a hundred sites. 6. # of actual hits
0 catagory and only six sites that match this phrase. 7. Reaction to 5/6
I was quite surprise. Yahoo gave me a lot less than Infoseek. But for me, certain information was easier to find using Yahoo. 8. Evaluation of hits
Yahoo is like a directory. It directs you to certain sites under certain catagories or subcatagories. I noticed there are end links which is like an added word that relates to the topic. For example, a subcatagory may have end links like relationship:romance. This is related to falling in love. I find this easier to use if I am using general topics. There are more interesting hits of falling in love. 9. a) Did mood influence search?
b) Did topic influence search?
c) Used search engine instructions or HELP?a) Yes, I wasn't in the mood earlier when I was using Infoseek, but now that I used Yahoo, I find that I am quite satisfy with my search.

c) Was it first response?a) child abuse
b) I chosed this topic because I recently saw a program on child abuse and I wanted to know more about it.
c) No, my first search was on "children" but it was too broad so I search again and used "child abuse".5. # of expected hits
I expected around 500,000. 6. # of actual hits
1,537,626 7. Reaction to 5/6
I guess I really underestimated. To me 500,000 was a lot but I guess child abuse is a broad and controversial topic. Therefore, many people would want to input data on the web regarding child's safety, prevention, warning signs and other related details. 8. Evaluation of hits
I did find topics on type of child abuse but it wasn't together in one section. I had to scroll around just to find the different types of child abuse. I don't like the rating system under each sites because it does not help in finding types of child abuse. The ratings are suppose to be the percentage of relevance but it does not work for me. 9. a) Did mood influence search?

c) Yes, it was my first response.5. # of expected hits
I expected about 100,000 hits. 6. # of actual hits
I got 754,211 hits. 7. Reaction to 5/6
I thought that I was comfortable in estimating about 100,000 hits but I guess I was wrong. I was quite surprise at how many actual hits I've got because I thought that rock climbing was not really a popular activity to do. 8. Evaluation of hits
I found out that there are a lot of the sites that contains places where you can actually go to the mountain and do rock climbing. I also found out that there are places where you can go and do indoor rock climbing. I wanted to find tips on rock climbing before I actually go ahead and go rock climbing. There are some useful pages which talks about what you need to do to prepare for this type of activities. I find the results very helpful. 9. a) Did mood influence search?

I was quite surprise since Infoseek gave me many more hits but I should have learned from my previous results on other searches that Infoseek and Yahoo are two different type of search engine and it searches for the information differently. 8. Evaluation of hits
The sites are grouped together under subcatagories for example climbing schools, regional information, or even indoor climbing gyms. It depends on what you ar searching for to find the data you need. I found it very useful if I wanted to look for indoor rock climbing center and how each one are alike and how they differ. 9. a) Did mood influence search?

2. Prior Generational Reports on Search Engines:
Generation 4, Report 3>Ryan Mitsui
Shane Cobb-Adams
Shane describe the search engines as "hunting dogs". It is a place where an individual program these "hunting dogs" to sniff out the things that they are looking for. But as Shane found out the only problem though is that the search engine, like the dog, is only as good as his master has taught him to be.
What this mean is that what we can find on the web regarding a certain topic depends on what or how we input the information. Shane used three different search engines to find topics of interest. He used Infoseek, Magellan, and Alta Vista. To his knowledge, just because a topic has thousands of hits, it does not mean that they are all relevant and helpful. And also, nobody has time to scroll though thousands of hits. Would you? He said, to correct this problem, is to read about the HELP file or FAQ file to find out more about each engines specific abilities and forms of narrowing your search down.
He found out that different search engines have different ways of narrowing down searches. In all search engines you can use Boolean constrictor to minimize the search. In Magellan, a + (plus) is use which is similar to the Boolean and. So when there are too much hits and you don't have the time to scroll through all of them, narrow it down. He also said, if you can't find what you are looking for, don't get discourage, just try other search engines.Jami Kaneshiro
