Comments on Leslie Agena's Report 4 (G4b)
The Generation 5 Report 4, discussed the concept of mapping the Generational Curriculum. The students of this generation felt that by mapping the Curriculum they grasped a better understanding of how all the links worked. Leslie Agena and Jocelyn'sJocelyn's Report 4 (G4b)
Both agree that this is a Natural Expanding Phenomenon, Leslie states:""The organizational growth of Leon James's Curriculum is still expanding through his students who create their own home pages and reports. He calls his classes generations. This type of expansion is called a natural expanding phenomenon. Since the site is still growing, more information will be added to his page in the near future. Leon James has generations 1 to 4 in his Traffic Psychology and Cyber-Psychology courses. This site is not an artificial site in which there is more organization. A natural site such as this can always be changed and improved."" While Jocelyn, states: ""Each class is a new generation and they expand on what the last class was working on, or they work on related topics. This class is a naturally expanding phenomenon because it constantly changes every time a student adds something to their home page. Each student adds links to various pages on the internet, links to other students in their class, and links to previous generations, building a cyber community"" These ladies both agree that the Generation Curriculum's expansion helps students gain more knowledge about the Internet from the Instructor as well as from the past students that were in the Curriculum. They both suggest that a guide be placed to help students along. A tour guide was mentioned by Jocelyn but we know how Quincy feels about that, so Leslie's suggestions of indexes and search engines would most likely be preferred by many students. I prefer Indexes myself from search engines. Search engines gives you a broad search and mostly you waste some time going around in circles trying to get to a particular site. Once in a while you get lucky and may find the site quick. Indexes are useful because you click and you are there, no hassel.I didn't know what to look for on the Generational Curriculum for the home pages of G6, 459. I did find the description of the 18 links of Professor Leon James Home Page. It was sort of repetitive to what Generation 7 had recently completed. Some ideas were seen different by others and that is where the learning of different areas arise from, different perspectives. Here are some updated views about Dr. James 18 links.
The tradition of the Generational Curriculum began the year I was born, 1975. The Generational Curriculum Archives were paper bound reports awaiting the chance to be placed online for all to view and see. Currently these paper bound reports are one by one being entered online by 499 students and others. Soon many surfers will be able to go far back into time to see how this all began and follow the time line up to the present status of the Curriculum. You will find that the generations are separated by directories and easily accessible. How can this be done? You may ask, It is simple. The typed information from the Daily Round Archives are scanned into the computer, and the students in 499 create websites for the new information that was scanned into the computer. The site is cared for and watched by Professor James and the following generations to follow. This is now call the Online Daily Round Archives.
I think the history of the GC is very helpful to know. It gives the student an idea of where this curriculum began and an idea of where we can go with it. It is amazing that within twelve years the technology increased so rapidly that it is hard to keep up with. It is hard to imagine how far the GC has come. From paper to online, is something that impressed me and will impress the rest who surfs this site. There are no obstacles to get in the way of creating a better future. The past generations can add to their pages and continue their work they began. The future generations will be able to compare the differences between the web designs then and now and in the future. That could be another report for them to explore. Differences in Web Designs 1975-present. The history of this course gives so much insight for expansion that there are unlimited ideas that could be aroused.
The most intriguing element that I found was the differences in web designs and content. The Designs seemed so limited to the creator of the page. I am assuming that not many features were available then that are now. Sound is a new feature that can be added and video to a web site. Just by looking at my generations web designs and the past generations, we have by far exceeded some limits of web design. I think it is nice to see technological advancement within the growing generations.
I am glad that I am a part of the generational curriculum. It is exciting to take part in a tradition that has began since 1975. I feel like I am a part of an extended family. I never expected to be in a unique educational experience like this one. There are things that I have learned that no book would be able to teach. The advancement of this technology will one day change the way we do homework, learn, and communicate with one another. If I didn't take this class granted, I would have less stress, but I would lack a chance to experience surfing the web, creating a web page, and learning about different strategies to learning. I am very happy that I had the chance to participate in this curriculum. I hope my contribution to the GC will help future generations like the past generations has helped me.
I see vast expansion throughout the years. I hope to see more organized indexes to help the future generations in surfing different sites. I would like to suggest a Family tree design that would help others see how far the GC has come.
"I find that Home Pages are always under construction for those owners who are personally involved. Constructing Home Pages on the World Wide Web is an exciting activity! Just think: you have the world at your finger tips. Because you determine what the browser sees and has access to, you are acting like a virtual god -- building a cyberspace architecture through virtual pathways to people's minds." I found this statement to be very inspiring for me and I hope it is for others.
Here you will find different views about the Internet between Dr. James and his friend. The article discussed the functions of a home page, the links, hyperlinks, and other areas of interests. Dr. James shows his friend the home page he created. Feeling proud of his creation, Dr. James shows off his page to his friend in hopes of the same response of excitement. Instead, the feeling of unappreciation sets in. But after his disappointment, Dr. James realized that there were two view points to look at the Internet. An internal and external view. The external view is briefly defined as unattractive, unexciting, and uninviting. The internal view is just the opposite. My advice is you got to experience it before you can appreciate it.
"These external considerations regarding Internet are necessary and worthwhile. The new teletechnology is a boon to society worldwide. We
need to protect and foster its development through appropriate and wise legislation and international agreements" says Dr. James. Reading this article makes a web designer feel good about oneself. Relating to the feeling of Dr. James is easily understood. No one can understand the accomplishments of creating a web page until they spend the hours and time doing one.
I believe the "virtual book" in hypertext is like an dictionary and encyclopedia wrapped in one. The "virtual book" is and always will be changing and expanding as time continues. You have control as to what you want to read and discover in this book. There are no specific areas that need to be known. All one needs to do is click to change pages or skip by scrolling down. If you don't know what to do there is an index to help you find what you are looking for. The "virtual book" is then significant with unique features such as communication, new information everyday about various subjects and ideas. It far surpasses the dull textbook which classes give for assignments. You are not restricted to stay in one area, you can travel to different sites just by clicking. It sounds too good to be true and some things are. But as we know not all things are perfect.
There are some problems with the hypertext navigation, but hopefully it can be fixed as time goes on. Like searching for a title in Barnes and Nobles, it is the same with the Internet. Internet users are going to need to utilize indexes, search engines, and other resources to help them locate what they are looking for. It is complicated when the web sites are cluttered with information and with icons to figure out what is going on. Like Quincy said, "If a website is poorly designed or their is no index like Dr. James has taught us to put on each of our pages, a visitor can easily get lost." Sometimes there are too many links to decide which one seems interesting to go to. Then you have to wait for it to load and then if you get where you want to go there are more links yet to check out. It seems that the less information the easier the task but how much useful can it be? Comments on G5 409b Spring 97 Reports
Comments on Skye Nakayama's Report 2 On Web Architecture
Skye provides the reader with the option to terminate or continue which I thought was genius. Skye put a brief description about the contents of the site and then left the rest up to you. It seems that G5 was researching something called, glover.com. But Skye's report the reader knows that the experience for Skye was an unpleasant one. Skye complained about the time it took the site to download due to many icons and pictures found there. I understand completely how irritating it can be to wait for a picture and find that it was nothing but ordinary. Despite the fact of a huge disappointment, Skye found something rather amusing," Closely related to this fairly interesting link is the glover.com/sucky
link that gives a top ten worst things to do in your home page list."
Comments on erintana's Report 2 on Web Architecture
The colors to this report are really bright and bad for my eyes. The pink is too bright with the purple. Once you get by the shock, the content to Erin's report is fabulous. Erin goes in to detail of how frightful her experiences were with web surfing and designing. I am sure that we all have had that similar experiences and that is why so many students withdrew from the class. The anxiety alone was too much to bare. Like Erin, I am happy to have the experiences that I have from this class despite the rough times. I think I enjoyed reading about her anxiety because it gave me comfort to know that previous generations has had similar problems. I think no one would drop the class if, a group effort was spent actively learning HTML on the computer in the lab. Even I had problems and if it wasn't for the help of my friends from Cyber-City I wouldn't have made it through the completion of my first web page.
How to mine the GC for its rich and growing information is hard for me to give suggestions. There are many navigational problems that needs to be improved for effcient use of the Curriculum.
As the curriculum gets larger the confusion of navigating the GC will grow also. There are some help aids to contribute to our ease of surfing, but even with the help of indexes, table of contents, and search engines, it is difficult to know exactly where you are in the Curriculum. Also some links are not working and needs to be updated. Everything needs to be working to at least have a good idea of what the GC is all about. Without a link working it is like being disconnected from the rest of the GC world. The expansion of the GC curriculum is like a family tree. Each generation learns from the previous generations before them. Like parents passing down information to their children hoping to guide them well into their future. They base their learning experiences on what the other generations have learned and add their own experiences in hopes to better ours and lead us to our goals with the least obstacles in our way. Carrying out the tradition the future, us and beyond us, will also contribute to the GC in hopes of better advancing the curriculum for others to learn from and access easily. By using each others input of the curriculum the learning capabilities has been astounding. The growth of the GC will be tremendous over the years with the help of past generations, I know the future generations will not only advance the curriculum but also expand new ideas and excel beyond any obstacle they encounter. "It is evident that the WIB was dysfunctional due to the lack of advertisement and responses." The main problem that I found for the WIB was no actual participation from the public. The reason for no participation was due to lack of advertisement. I am sure if they advertised more there would have been greater responses. Another problem was that only the friends of generation three knew about the site and generation three themselves it seems.
responses. The solution to this problem may be solved with increased advertising.
There
could be a possibility that no one, besides Generation Three, knew that the site existed.
Increased advertising on the Internet may educate more people about this site, and may
spark an interest in a few. For example, a good idea would be to enter the WIB into more
search engines. This would create more access to the WIB. Another good idea would be to
post information about the WIB throughout campus. Orient students about the site.
Hopefully it's popularity would expand outside the University of Hawaii by word; hopefully
it would expand throughout the world."
Comments on other G7 Students' Report 1 Earl Cachola's Report:
The Generational Curriculum Earl's Web page is neatly organized and has a nice navigation table. His content is good but very brief especially with his comments on mining the GC. Knowing the over achiever he will improve on everything to make it perfect. His comments on the history of the GC is good but brief also. He doesn't put emphasis on the culture of the GC. Overall though I love his background, green is my favorite color.
. Alfred Basioa's Report
on The Generational Curriuculm I really enjoyed Alfred's report. He gives great advice to the class about surviving the class: Here are a few: Procrastination No! NO!, Always ask questions when in doubt, never use blue font on black background. That was great! He is very creative and helpful. I love his last statement. Be Creative! BE CREATIVE!
. My advice to the G8 students: Don't wait to begin your reports, if you do it is hard to catch up but doable. Second don't stress about the work if I can do this you can. Three, Work hard and you will be proud of what you accomplish. Oh and have fun!
As for the Instructor: You are the Key Master to the WWW, I am honored to say that you are couragous for having a program like this for Psychology majors. I am sure the department had some reservations on the curriculum. For you to be so far in so little time is a great accomplishment. I hope that your class is available to others in the future it is a great experience for the future.
