"Here's to the Beginning and the End!"

The following report is based on many hours spent on the computer Surfing the Net with Search Engines. I used the following Search Engines: Net Search and Webcrawler. These search engines are unique in their own ways and the following reports will show you their individual characteristics. I will be giving results based on five searches for each search engine and conclude with my recommendations for the search engine I feel is most useful.

My First Search

1-Day, Date, Location: Saturday, November 15, 1997, Home

2- My mood or affective state? . I am a little tired but feel relaxed and happy.

3- Name of Search Engine and number of ties I've used it before and whether I like it or not and why? Infoseek! Accessed Infoseek many times before this so this time using Infoseek is for my report not for other seeks. I like Infoseek because it brings up a relevant sights to browse through and you can add words to add to your search if the search is too broad.

4-Search Statement I typed in (exact copy of wording)and why I chose those particular words, whether it contained/ Boolean/ Operators, why not or why yes(was it a first search or a response to another search? My search statement was &Weddings" I chose this topic and word because I am getting married in 1999 and would like to find ideas for my wedding. Ideas for a wedding theme, decorations, and favors. I did not use Booleans in this statement because I felt that they were not needed at this time.

5- Number of expected hits or results? 15,000 is my number of expected hits

6- Number of Hits actually gotten?

actual hits: 17,624 pages

7- My Reaction to 5/6? .

There were 2624 hits more then my estimate. I should have estimated higher but I felt that was too high. I guess there are a lot of sights that concentrates on weddings. I don't know if half of these hits are relevant to what I am searching for. The Infoseek search engine gave me the first ten and out of the ten I chose one based on the title Above Heaven's Gate. The page contained information on wedding sites, photographers, and a reverend. It was a successful search based on the first ten.

8-My evaluation of the hits: What proportion were relevant and How I found this out? .

I found that most of the sights were relevant to look at. I looked at Above Heavens' Gate and Bridal Links first. They were in the top ten choices. I found that Above Heavens' Gate had Services for an entire wedding. But Bridal links was the Best between the two. It had services for planning a wedding, examples of peoples weddings, ideas for decorations, and many other great things.

9- How I felt about it? Did your mood influence how you searched or browsed? Did the topic influence you search strategy? Did you make use of search engine instructions or help documents? Why?

I thought the search was good because it gave me good results. I was able to find florists located in Hawaii, photographers that were recommended to look into and I found that the florists do full decorations of the wedding sites and of the reception site. I don't think my mood influenced my search too much in the beginning but as I kept browsing the site I got excited because I found relevant topics. I chose Weddings because I wanted a broad turn out of different sites. Yes I guess the topic influenced my search a bit because I wasn't exactly sure what I was looking for so I decided to be broad in my search. This help me decide which site was most valuable to me. No I didn't use search engine instructions or help documents because I felt that I didn't need to for the first search. I think I will for my latter searches.

My Third Search

1-Day, Date, Location: Saturday, November 15, 1997, Home

2- My mood or affective state? .

I am excited to see if my results get better with each search that I do. The last two searches were excellent and I hope the next one will be the same results.

3- Name of Search Engine and number of ties I've used it before and whether I like it or not and why?

Infoseek! Accessed Infoseek many times before this so this time using Infoseek is for my report not for other seeks. I like Infoseek because it brings up a relevant sights to browse through and you can words to add to your search if the search is too broad. Infoseek has been successful so far in the seek for my topics. I hope the search continues well. I like Infoseek very much because my searches for my topics has been successful.

4-Search Statement I typed in (exact copy of wording)and why I chose those particular words, whether it contained/ Boolean/ Operators, why not or why yes(was it a first search or a response to another search?

My search statement was &"grooms attire" " I chose this topic and word because I am getting married in 1999 and would like to find ideas for my wedding gown.

My improved search statement was &"Grooms Attire"": I chose this format of words because I found in the tip section that capitalizing an quotations narrows the chances.

5- Number of expected hits or results?

100 is my number of expected hits.

6- Number of Hits actually gotten?

actual hits: 101 pages

actual hits: 101 pages

7- My Reaction to 5/6? .

I was almost exact. I was only one page off. I was very excited. I guess grooms attire is something that is only beginning to be constructed for the web. I didn't expect much because I have been told by many consultants that the men are not usually interested in planning their weddings. That is so neat that there are only 101 pages for grooms attire. Compared to the 2164 pages for wedding gowns.

I received the same number of hits for the second try.

8-My evaluation of the hits: What proportion were relevant and How I found this out? .

This search was disappointing. I found only two sights that were relevant out of the fifty that I looked at. 2 out of 50 is pretty bad. The one site I looked at wasn't even impressive. I think I need to type in better words for locating grooms attire. I tried again and it was the same results. I think I need to try different words to get a better result.

9- How I felt about it? Did your mood influence how you searched or browsed? Did the topic influence you search strategy? Did you make use of search engine instructions or help documents? Why? I found that this search wasn't as successful as the last two. I was disappointed to find that the search was about planning weddings instead of grooms attire. I got so disappointed that I stopped the search quickly after lookin at half of the sites that it listed. I guess my Wedding gown topic didn't influence my search too much for word structure. I took for granted that if I typed grooms attire it would be the same as the last. I was wrong. I did use the tips for Infoseek and I found that I got the same results. I used the help documents because I wanted to find more on grooms attire but I wasn't able to. I need to rethink my strategy and use new words.

My Fourth Search

1-Day, Date, Location: Saturday, November 15, 1997, Home

2- My mood or affective state? .

I am Upset since my last search was disappointing.

I am hoping that by changing my words that infoseek will not bring up the same results.

4-Search Statement I typed in (exact copy of wording)and why I chose those particular words, whether it contained/ Boolean/ Operators, why not or why yes(was it a first search or a response to another search?

My search statement was &"Tuxedos" " I chose this topic and word because I am getting married in 1999 and would like to help my husband find ideas for his wedding attire.

5- Number of expected hits or results?

2000 is my number of expected hits.

6- Number of Hits actually gotten?

actual hits: 2168 pages

7- My Reaction to 5/6? .

I was about a hundred away from being exact on the money. I am glad that there are more hits this time. Even if I can't see all of them, maybe I will be able to find something relevant for my husbands search.

8-My evaluation of the hits: What proportion were relevant and How I found this out? .

The sites that I looked at suggested wedding shops for Hawaii that I could go with my husband to be and look at their selections. Out of the fifty I looked at I found that thirty of them were helpful because they had images to look at the different types of tuxedos to chose from. They also gave prices of each.

9- How I felt about it? Did your mood influence how you searched or browsed? Did the topic influence you search strategy? Did you make use of search engine instructions or help documents? Why? I felt that the search was a huge success and I enjoyed looking at the different sites. I was able to look at the different tuxedos available and my husband to be was enjoying the quantity of tuxedos to chose from. I felt excited to continue the search so I looked further by trying to isolate the search by typing in another word like Hawaii Tuxedo shops. I found no results but that was alright. Yes the last search I did was bad so I decided to use the word tuxedo instead of grooms attire and found more results that were relevant from the last search. I didn't use the help documents again because I didn't want to.

My Fifth Search

1-Day, Date, Location: Saturday, November 15, 1997, Home

2- My mood or affective state? .

I have clamed down and am able to be a little less disappointed with Infoseek.

In this search I hope that the search will be narrower.

4-Search Statement I typed in (exact copy of wording)and why I chose those particular words, whether it contained/ Boolean/ Operators, why not or why yes(was it a first search or a response to another search?

My search statement was &" Wedding+Customs" " I chose this topic and word because I am getting married in 1999 and would like to help my husband find ideas for his wedding attire.

5- Number of expected hits or results?

140 is my number of expected hits.

6- Number of Hits actually gotten?

actual hits: 135 pages

7- My Reaction to 5/6? .

I was five away from the exact amount for my search. I was content that the search was narrow because that is what I wanted. I was happy to know that I would be looking at specific customs that the search brought up. Looking at the results there were several interesting sites I wanted to browse.

8-My evaluation of the hits: What proportion were relevant and How I found this out? .

The sites I looked at reveled ancient customs that Greeks, Chinese, and the Romans did for their weddings. I found that the Chinese Lion dance was a custom to drive evil spirits away from the couple and to wish them luck and fertility throughout their marriage. I found that the cake was a symbol of fertility and sweet happiness. That was a custom from the Romans. There were a lot of relevant sites that I visited with good information. I would highly recommend that this site be use for anyone needing to plan a wedding with different customs in the reception party. Address to be found under my bookmarks page labeled under weddings.

9- How I felt about it? Did your mood influence how you searched or browsed? Did the topic influence you search strategy? Did you make use of search engine instructions or help documents? Why?

I found that the search was good overall and that I learned a great deal about the different customs for weddings. I think I will go back later and read more about wedding customs. My mood made it easier to search through these results because I had only one disappointing search so far. I didn't use any help tips for this search but my search strategy was the same as the last search. Capital letters in the beginning of the word and this time a plus in between the words. It resulted in a narrower search which I enjoyed looking through and wanted a narrow search anyway.

My Sixth Search

1-Day, Date, Location: Saturday, November 15, 1997, Home

2- My mood or affective state? .

I am happy to be using another search engine to compare results.

3- Name of Search Engine and number of ties I've used it before and whether I like it or not and why?

Webcrawler! Accessed webcrawler many times before this so this time using webcrawler is for my report not for other searches at this time. I like webcrawler because it was the first search engine I was introduced to from ICS 101 class. I was use to working with webcrawler before using Infoseek. It also gives the top twenty five results it feels matches the topic.

4-Search Statement I typed in (exact copy of wording)and why I chose those particular words, whether it contained/ Boolean/ Operators, why not or why yes(was it a first search or a response to another search?

My search statement was &" Weddings" " I chose this topic and word because I am getting married in 1999 and would like to help me find Ideas for my wedding day. Like florists, decorations, sites etc.

5- Number of expected hits or results?

18,000 is my number of expected hits.

6- Number of Hits actually gotten?

actual hits: 8544 pages

7- My Reaction to 5/6? .

Unlike infoseek, webcrawler had less results with top twenty five results and then the next twenty five results to follow. I like the idea that webcrawler was able to give twenty five sites at a time instead of 10. I was shocked to see less hits then infoseek. I expected about the same. As you can see I over estimated my guess by 10,000.

8-My evaluation of the hits: What proportion were relevant and How I found this out? .

I would say that out of the hundred I search fifty was relevant to what I was looking for. It gave me sites of wedding consultants to visit. Florists that I could order from. The search also brought up available photographers, DJ's and wedding sites.

9- How I felt about it? Did your mood influence how you searched or browsed? Did the topic influence you search strategy? Did you make use of search engine instructions or help documents? Why? .

I found that the search was interesting and both helpful. I have other sites now to visit that infoseek did not show me. I feel that by using two different search engines you get the most out of your search. The items that one may not show you maybe the other search engine will. I didn't use help this time either because I felt I didn't need to.

I like the idea that webcrawler was able to give twenty five sites at a time instead of 10. I was shocked to see less hits then infoseek. I expected about the same. As you can see I over estimated my guess by nearly a hundred. There were less number of hits compared to infoseek by a couple thousand. I guess webcrawler has less access to sites then infoseek.

8-My evaluation of the hits: What proportion were relevant and How I found this out? .

I would say that the results were good enough to give me new sites that infoseek did not bring up. I found ten sites that were helpful for me and relevant to my topic of search.

9- How I felt about it? Did your mood influence how you searched or browsed? Did the topic influence you search strategy? Did you make use of search engine instructions or help documents? Why?

I felt that maybe there were more sites to see and because of the choice of words I used I didn't get to see most of those sites that could be relevant. I was baffled as to why there were less hits then infoseek and wondered if it was because of the available sites to the different search engines. My next search strategy must be with different words to get a broader search. I plan on using help documents later to find more sites for wedding gowns.

6- Number of Hits actually gotten?

actual hits: No results were found

7- My Reaction to 5/6? .

There were no results for the topic Grooms Attire. I was a little upset that there were no results. I guess the words Grooms Attire was bad for both search engines. Stay away from typing these words. It will save you the stress.

8-My evaluation of the hits: What proportion were relevant and How I found this out? .

There wasn't any results for this search!

9- How I felt about it? Did your mood influence how you searched or browsed? Did the topic influence you search strategy? Did you make use of search engine instructions or help documents? Why? .

I was really upset. I tried to use other methods with the words. I typed it with a plus sign and with lower case letters and nothing worked. I stopped and gave up quickly. I am beginning to get irritated by this. I used the help and it didn't help. I guess this search engine doesn't respond to groom or attire. I hoped that the help topic would help but I tried everything it suggested and it didn't work.

8-My evaluation of the hits: What proportion were relevant and How I found this out? .

I would say that out of the hundred I search fifty was relevant to what I was looking for. I found several sites that were from Hawaii. I was interested in the types of tuxedos they had to offer and was amazed that they had photos for many of the sites. They even had prices to offer you over the net. You can also rent or purchase and they show accessories for the tuxedos they have. I liked four out of the fifty I looked at.

The theory of men having less on the Internet is destroyed with this search. Because webcrawler gave more results for tuxedos then for wedding gowns.

9- How I felt about it? Did your mood influence how you searched or browsed? Did the topic influence you search strategy? Did you make use of search engine instructions or help documents? Why?

I found Chinese customs again, Ethnic Customs that was a new hit and Jewish customs, lastly The feast of Trumpets. I enjoyed reading about the different types of ethnic customs there were in this world. I also think I will be using the Chinese Lion dance in my wedding since I am part Chinese. I am really excited and can't wait to get into full bloom with my wedding plans. These searches have helped and influenced my decisions in planning a great wedding. Next time I want to search for more wedding ideas I can limit my search by using webcrawlers search engine. I could also use the help documents more. I didn't use it because twice I did and they didn't help much.

Prior Generational Reports on Search Engines: Generation 3 Reports
"What do others say about Search Engines?"

Comments on Kathy Morifuji's Report 3 on Web Search Engines

a) Kathy defines search engines as: "In my experiences with search engines, I define them as a tool for an infinite amount of information. It is a place where you can search on any topic you are interested in. And the results you get are lists of different pages you can visit and read their information. A search engine is like a library catolog system. However, the amount of information is much greater." I agree with Kathy. I thought that search engines were tools of infinite amounts of information. But I think all search engines have a limited amount of information. Yes they say there are 15,657 hits but they show you only maybe a couple hundred. Kathy had some problems narrowing down her topics but she solved that by using another word to get a few relevant topics for her search. By using another word she got some help but she realized like myself that search engines have different types of information avaiable.

b) Kathy had the same problems in her search like me because she used words that were too broad. I intentionally used a broad search first to try and find out how broad it would be. I don't know if that was Kathy's strategy. But she narrowed the search with using History of Hula Chants instead of Hula Chants. This helped narrow her search down. As for my search I was able to narrow it down after my first search with Weddings. Knowing that Weddings hits were over 18,000, I hoped that the next search for Wedding Gowns were narrower and they were. I found that using other search engines could solve the problem of broad searches. Infoseek was really broad while Webcrawler was a narrower search.

Comments on Ginger Andrew's Report 3 on Web Search Engines

a)Ginger states that Damon robots are the workers to search engines. "One major part played in the retrieval of documents,is via the Damon robots. They do most of the work. Don't be frightened, there is nothing sadistic about "Damon robots". These robots, spend their entire existence searchingtheir domains (the Web) in its entirity. They are forever collecting and classifying new data, into specific word type categories." Ginger then leads up to discuss in her report about the easy access of retrieving books from the Internet. She claims that the future generations will have an easier time with searching for information on the net instead of the library with old books. I agree with her. The future generations mainly kids today and my kids will have a greater advantage to do research from the Internet instead of from the books in the library because the books would probably be on the Net already. I know that Colleges are already requiring students to use the net as a resource for their reports today. In a few years it will only be beneficial to learn how to use the net and search engines.

Ginger also discusses the helpful hints that the search engines gives to minimize your search of a certain topic. She highly suggest that you use the tips for each search engine given that they are updating the systems every day or so. Then she goes into discussing use search engines which everyone either learns as they go or they have some type of prior knowledge to use them. But experience does vary from person to person. Here is what Ginger learned from search engines. "The most prominate thing that comes to mind is that there are so many out there. I have only scratched the surface and I am sure there will be plenty of new editions. I learned how to get what I want faster by reading the tips section. This tells how the service can be better accessed. It also brings to attenion the updates to the system. I have learned legions compared to where I started. I suspect that if I don't make a conscious effort to keep up with the changes, I will lose out, bigtime." I very much agree with her. There are so many different search engines that it is impossible to keep up with the new and changing search engines if you don't stay on top of using them. Ginger's report is very helpful and informational but watch out for her background effects it can really make your eyes work overtime.

b) It seems that she didn't have too many problems because she used her resources such as the hints and tips of the search engines that she used. But she also made herself very knowledgeable with the search engines Alta vista and Yahoo, which made her able to access the information easier. I guess practice helps. I feel that there were some problems that she encountered in the beginning of using search engines but because she used them so much she was able to avoid them in the future. She probably used Boolean's in her search or her topic was a heavy topic that many people were interested enough to put up a web page on it.

Comments on Jami Kaneshi's Report 3 on Web Search Engines

a) Jami defines a search engines: "A search engine is a tool used for searching for a particular subject or topic, or any word for that matter. It can be compared to a library system (UH carl, card catalog, etc.), but I think it is a whole lot easier and has a whole lot more information readily available in a quick amount of time. Several databases have been created which make up these search engines. Some names of search engines are Yahoo, Lycos, Infoseek, Webcrawler, Dejanews, Inktomi, and Opentext. These databases are used to search web pages and/or usegroups." She then goes on to explain how the search engines are able to dispense the information through data bases. Jami then tries her search on search engines. She seems to know about many different search engines but she does come up on a few problems.

b) Jami's problems were like everyone else that would be using the search engines for the first time. She had problems getting into Net search and began to get frustrated with the computer. Once she was in she used the search engine without realizing what one she was using. That was not too good because then she wouldn't be able to get back to the sites she searched if she wanted to retrieve them later for another report. She later tries Yahoo and found some difficulty with her statement that she typed in for the search. A notice appeared and stated, "Please use a non-empty search string." Now to find out what that was would easily be answered if she asked the lab monitor and if the person did not know the answer to try the hints or tips table for the search engine to find out. But she tried another word "inclusion" and found relevant searches for her research. In the end she thought that her search was good for the first time.

Conclusion
"Last Remarks from an Active Wonder of the Net!"

a) I have learned some great lessons while doing this report. I have used search engines since ICS 101 and I still don't know everything I could about them. This long exercise made me realize that I must learn to use the help tips that is available and use more Boolean variables in my searches. I must also not take for granted that I know these words will work. I have to learn to try and use other words to get better results with Boolean variables. I should also try more then one search engine besides infoseek. I get a lot of hits but most is not relevant to my search. I would like to use Net Search more often. It is like a Meta Search. There are four different search engines that searches the same topic. This makes the search easier. If there isn't a site you like from one you can go to another without leaving the site you already accessed.

b) I have some suggestions for the future generations to follow. Don't give up and be patient. The search engines gives a lot of sites that are not relevant to your search but there are a few that match what you are looking for. Secondly, Use Boolean variables in your searches it does help narrow things a bit and it may ensure your findings better. Third, try and not to access the computer when you are tired or upset because your emotions do affect the way you search. Being tired for me was a great influence on how I search the search engines. I gave up a couple of times and I shouldn't have. It prolongs the task. Being upset kind of makes you doubtful of the results that will come up in the search.
